Sorry for not making this my first post... I'll admit I wasn't paying attention. These days it's so expensive I couldn't afford it anyway!!
I have been a DJ since 1999. I started working for "Doc" Dockery of "DJ Zone Entertainment" in Lake County, IL. He never really paid me fairly but it got me the experience with the equipment and a little extra cash in my pocket. He did some karaoke, but mostly used it as background music to try and start his music career that never really took off.
In 2002 I literally had a karaoke show drop into my lap when I went to a bar in Mount Plesant, WI to meet a friend. It was the bar owner's birthday and she had purchased an RSQ unit and a dozen CD+Gs. The guy she had asked to run it was one of her bartenders and had no idea what he was doing with the equipment so I offered to help him out. The bar owner offered me the gig by the end of the night.
In 2003 I officially severed my relationship with "Doc" and joined forces with my brother-in-law who was formerly with "Blame it on the Karaoke". Our new company continued the shows in Mount Plesant and afforded me the luxury of having alternating weekends with the family.
In 2004 my partner pushed me out of the company and even incorporated my stage name into his own. As I was traveling 65 to 70 miles one way for the show since I had moved, I really didn't put up much of a fight... it was really just a major pain in the ***!!
My brither-in-law got his just dessert... six months later he lost the show. He was starting the shows later and later each week as well as having one of our regulars run the show (unpaid) while he shot pool. Last I heard, the regular who he had running his show now HAD his show.
I have run a few private gigs for friends and co-workers from the day job since, but am only now truely working on a new start.
I am one of those who actually beleive in loyalty and refuse to run shows that will take singers from shows I frequent. If I can not run in the area on a KJs off night, I won't run in the area. That may make me somewhat of an enigma, but my position is simple... there is a big difference between going out TO Karaoke and RUNNING karaoke. I like to be able to go out on occasion and not have to worry about loading the next singer's song or if I have time to go to the washroom and I am sure there are others who feel the same way. I wouldn't frequent the show of someone who has stolen all my singers and I'm sure they wouldn't come to mine on a regular basis either.
well... that's me and my history in a nutshell.
