Darn I must like this job, Tonight I will stop at 1 AM, shut down and go home. Hit the sack about 1:30 and then wake up at 4:05 in the morning to ride my bike 3 miles to work and start at 5. Then go back to the bar tomorrow at 5 to tear down because there is a band tomorrow night. Then work Saturday morning. I will be sleeping in Saturday night!

This job turn anyone else's schedule upside down?

Mine is so upside down it is not even funny. Even my children are off schedule! They stay up half the night, just like mommy, and sleep half the day. My 5 year old starts kindergarten in August...I'm so worried. We've got to get on schedule. I'M PANICKING!!

It can play havoc alright, trying to mix hosting duties with day job. We start the week off by getting home at 2:15 a.m. from our Monday night gig -- and it's downhill from there. I had a show once that was Tues, Wed & Thurs, 9:30 to 1:30 -- it was about 15 miles from my home. I would have to get up at 6:30 a.m. for those 3 mornings.... talk about groggy and out of sorts...thankfully it didn't last long (my choice). Won't do that again.

During my busy season at my day job all I do is work. I'm at the office at 8 or 9 am in the morning and work until sometimes 8 or 9 pm. The nights I do karaoke I usually go from day job straight to my night job not eating dinner until I get home at 3 or 4 am. I try not to work on Sundays at all, but sometimes it's not an option not to.

Those are the months you don't see me on the forum at all. It totally bites ! The upside is the other 6 months out of the yr I work much less at my day job giving me time to catch up on the things I wasn't able to do.

I can actually say I've fallin asleep standing up. LMAO

Yeah, I must say that sometimes it is very hard on you! 90% of the people don't see the whole story, they only see the 'karaoke/dj host' for a few hours.....which is the easy part of the job. I only do every Saturday, go up and down on every Friday....I work 40-50hrs a week at my normal job, so there is not much family time or me time. It's very hard to stay modivated in both avenues. It's a good thing that I like both of my jobs...or I'd be in real trouble! It's a sacrifice...NO DOUBT! Best of luck..MrD

Getting up at 4:00 AM severely limits my weeknight availability. While it's not quite as late as yours ripman8, I am currently filling in for another KJ on Wednesdays from 7-10. And of course after the tear-down and load-out and drive home it's almost 11:30. So on Thursdays I'm feeling brain-dead. If I were to do any of my own weeknight shows they would have to be early. The best venues I've found for early weeknight shows are places like VFWs, Legions, Eagles clubs, Elk, Moose, etc... Those are the places I would inquire within.

At one point I was working a 3/4 schedule at the day job (3 days on, 4 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off 11 hrs a day).

On Fridays I would be up at 2:30am, out the door at 3:30am and finally get home around 6:00pm.

I'd sleep an hour, get up, get ready and out the door by 8:00pm to get to the bar in time to set-up and start by 9:00pm.

I'd run until 2:00am, tear down, get home, unload, change clothes, and be back on the road by 3:30 into the day job...

I'd finally get to sleep when I would collapse after the show on Sunday morning...

Needless to say, I was surviving on Effidrine and Jolt Cola!! :fright:

At my 2 weeknight gigs I'm done @ midnight then I break down (30 min) if I'm left alone then (but there always seems to be someone that wants to talk and not wanting to be an a**. Plus turning down offers from my new best friend the local drunk to help me put my equipment in the trailer. Then 30 minute (wed nite) and 45 minute (thursday nite) drive to the house. Parking the trailer and locking it up like Oak Ridge National Lab so the scum bag theives won't steal it, I in bed around 2:30. Alarm goes off @ 6am to begin my day job. I usuall try to catch a power nap between day and nite gig.

I don't think I'd survive my crazy schedule if I had to setup and tear down and I am fortunate that my day job is only a couple of miles from my regular karaoke gig.

My regulars are pretty understanding of the fact when I'm done I leave right away.

This is the main reason I try not to take on more gigs. I appreciate the offers, but I'm only one person.

Wow! I can't believe the schedules some of you manage. When I am home I help my wife with her show but she only does karaoke on Fri and Sat nights, usually 8:30/9:00 to 12:30/1:00. If its busy and the bar wants we stay longer for 30min rate. After tear down and waiting to get paid we usually get to bed around 2:30-300am. Makes getting up for church @ 9:30am on Sun a challenge.

During the week wife gets up sometime around 4:45am (I only know she's gone when I wake  ). She gets done with work around 2pm then sings for assisted living and retirement homes 2-3 times a week for about an hour. She is usually in bed by 9:30pm during the week.

Every third weekend she has to work the 2nd shift so no karaoke.

We have talked about adding a midweek show but I don't see that working out unless it coincides with her day off following the weekend that she works. That would only be every third week and doesn't really help establish a regular routine for customers.

I am used to the sometimes extremely long hours that I have to work when I travel but the wife does not do so well on limited sleep. I have noticed some of those 5hr energy bottles in fridge lately too...

.......I should add to this, my day job is 75miles (each way) from home and my karaoke gig is 45miles (each way) from my house in the opposite direction. Makes for a rather tiring week...MrD

Wow, I don't feel alone!

Concerning the 5 hour energy drink? I tried that one. It tasted like crap and did nothing for me! Just knowing that I owe my body some sleep and I will pay up keeps me going!
