myspace WAS the place to be. I find it very easy to set up, but the heavy use of graphics, sound etc really drags some sites down.

I like facebook a LOT more. I love the whole circles and how you see the commente from your group on your "home" page.

I'm still learning things about facebook... Good place for friends and family. Their online access makes it very easy for people to use their cell phones, and other mobile devices!

jam,

All I can say is that I like myspace.....but, I hardly have time to update that. There is 'tons' more pictures and stuff that I have to put up....just haven't had the time. Lots of peeps are trying to get me onto facebook, but I've commited to myspace and am staying there only. Too much work to do both. If you're on myspace, look me up! Best of luck..MrD

FACEBOOK! I hate to say it, but MySpace simply doesn't work as well.

The think about Facbook is it actively networks for you! With MySpace, you have to be more active to add to your friends list.... mining your friends friends to make connections.

With facebook it make suggestions for you constantly based on what you put in it. I've met up with a bunch of old classmates from high school woh've come by to check out the show, that I never connected to on MySpace.

That said, its a bit annoying with the "cupcakes", "beers" and other virtual crap people send you...lol.

I still don't know enough about it yet. KEEP THE REPLIES COMING I need to know the pros and cons from people who do use it on a regular basis

Facebook is better to reach people more quickly BUT many people i know do not want spam or business solicitations to crowd their wall or they'll "uninvite" you as a friend. ...same goes for too many junk posts, quizzes, and utterly stupid updates.

It is an awesome way to reconnect with classmates and old friends. Nearly all the updates i get are from married friends talking about their kids, jobs, and life in general.

MySpace still is a good way to advertise, although not as popular as it used to be. I pimped out myspace and added tons of deejay music and karaoke sing alongs a few years ago. It is a great tool and most djs i know still have their sites operating!

Myspace over Facebook for business imho. It's been well established and is known more for business now.

Facebook is more for personal stuff and catching up.

Plus there's a ton more cool stuff you can do to make your myspace page awesome. (i.e. play music, karaoke, add pics and video, etc...).

If you want to promote a karaoke business, create a "Page" for it, not a personal account. From the help section on FB:

Why is a Page a better solution than a personal account for artists, businesses, or brands?
Personal accounts are optimized for individuals, not artists, businesses, or brands. Facebook Pages allow artists, businesses, and brands to showcase their work and interact with fans. These pages come pre-installed with custom functionality designed for each category. For example, a band Page has a music player, video player, discography, reviews, tour dates, a discussion board that the artists can take advantage of. Third party developers will also build an array of applications that they will compete for Page Admins to add to their Pages. Facebook Pages are also not subject to a fan limit and can automatically accept fan requests.

I have an artist account on MySpace, and now that I've been on Facebook a while I'll be setting up a fan page for my music and karaoke related work.

I have 2 M/S and 1 F/B and hubby has a F/B. The F/B page is one I pop onto several times a day - it has been incredibly fruitful for communicating about my shows - particularly because the early evening venue also started one at my urging.

In a matter of six weeks or so, the number of people popping on and off the f/b is simply amazing. I do NOT like all the games, either, but skip over those, and have actually 'uninvited' several people who posted far too much (I don't need to see pics of their 2 year old every single day).

For business it has been tremendous. Myspace is too complex for many people ... who have absolutely NO fear about using F/B.

It's been a great way to advertise gigs, both karaoke and band. People who you think you'd never see at a gig show up out of the blue because they saw it on f/b. I can't recommend it enough.

First off... Facebook is better in my opinion, MySpace has really been taken over by the kids.

Facebook, if you are using it for the business, has the ability for people to become fans and get announcements about new shows, contests, specials at the bar, etc.

I have a myspace personal page, and a myspace musicians page... and a facebook whatever-the-hell page.... and I can't stand facebook.

I've tried and tried with it, but it's just SO confusing when you log in, it takes forever to scroll through all the junk and find what you're really looking for. All the little green plants, and beers, and hearts, and whatnot... Not very tastefull looking, and the crazy apps and invites.... geez, Louise. And you can't really "personalize" it.

Atleast on myspace you can set it to where NOTHING shows on your profile page without you approving it.

I'm sold on MySpace- it's very easy for ME to control who sees what when they visit my page. I know a lot of people are heading to facebook, but I've tried it and fail to see where it's any kind of improvement on Myspace at all.

I have both MS and FB. I use FB for personal use. I just noticed that a lot of people here have the same gripes with FB I have. All the quizzes and extra crap people send you. You don't have to "uninvite" them as friends. There are options to hide them in your newsfeed, so you don't have to see their pictures and quizzes. You can also ignore the "gifts" and "invites" all at once. It's not so bad. However, it does not allow much personalization, but if you hype up your MS page too much, it takes forever to load. And it's hard to find people on MySpace. Of course, in your situation, they would be finding you mostly. MySpace is probably better for you though. If you use Facebook for your show, you're going to see everyone's personal comments in your newsfeed. None of that would be karaoke related. It really is for more personal use.

Interesting Moonrider! My bad, didn't know it existed. Something definately to check out JAM!

Facebook does reach a ton more young people since their mass exodus from myspace and it's true most professionals i know (with non-karaoke jobs) have facebook accounts, like my doctor and dentist.

...looks like i'm a bit behind.....gotta go...surfs up! jr

I have both Myspace and Facebook. I have a "band site" for Myspace, and find it works better for me as a business tool than facebook. I haven't really been able to figure out a lot of the facebook stuff (ie: what on earth is this "Page" you speak of? *laugh*)

There was a time a few years ago where, if you were a performer and submitting for things, agents, casting directors, managers, etc. would ask if you had a myspace page - and would prefer that to an "official website." I'm not sure if that is still the case. Also - in my case - when looking for certain gigs, if they want a demo recording, they will accept (and often prefer) if you send them a myspace link. Myspace (at least if you have a band site) is pretty straight forward - there is no searching for information. The recordings are right there up front, and any information you might have about yourself is right there - no clicking on different links to try and find whatever it is they are looking for. No guesswork at all.

Facebook I feel is more of a networking/friends type of site. I DO like there "event invitation" feature, but feel there is too much other nonsense to deal with (quizzes, general silliness) from a business standpoint. I use Facebook to keep in touch with people I know. I do agree Facebook is better for getting in touch with people as it is proactive about suggesting people you might know.

I think both site have their value, and I do think they are each suited to different things. I do definitely find Myspace easier to to deal with as a business tool than Facebook.

Today?

MySpace - On the decline - becoming a wasteland of pages that are no longer updated

Facebook - On the rise - People I NEVER thought I'd see join, are suddenly showing up on a daily basis.

This is just until the next new shiny site comes along of course!

I love Facebook! I had a myspace ages ago that my daughter set up for me. I think I've bothered with it twice since then. It's not really all that user-friendly and you do have to actively recruit people.
Facebook is just the opposite. I find it really user friendly and intuitive and I don't have to actively search for people if I don't want to. They often come to me!
I like the fact that I can message a whole group of people and it reaches them instantly. As someone else said, many people have it on their cell phones and even Ipods.
I find that there are way more people on facebook relevant to me and my business than there ever was on myspace.
On myspace, I just usually got bands I've never heard of from places I've never heard of much less ever been to, wanting to be friends with me!
Facebook can be as local or as world wide as you want it to be.
