Tim, you should see the picture of me and Robin both dressed in "Tassle Tessie" outfits, and wearing wigs, when we went to visit Doug Kron and Skid Rowe in North Carolina for Halloween week back in 2004. We sat on Dean's (JOLT Sysop) lap to make him blush.

One of my accounts wants to do an extra night of karaoke. I want to make the 2nd night a little different than the first by adding some props like blow up guitars, wigs, hats, ect. I was also wanting to place a giant gong up somewhere so when somebody is really bad a customer can hit the gong with a mallet and the singer has to exit the stage.

Who determines who hits the gong and when might get kinda sticky, I want it all in fun but ya know there is always somebody who gets ticked off about something.
I don't want somebody to get the gong if they are pretty good and maybe not get it even if they are really bad but entertaining.

I was hoping some of you guys might have some ideas on things I could incorporate into my show.

Thanks, Mojo

I been to a gong show karaoke type show before & it was actually kind of fun. The way it worked was if you gonged anyone, you were obligated to buy the singer a drink of their choice - once gonged, the music stopped & you were done. You could gong somone for any reason, but your tab would reflect their drink again OF THEIR CHOICE, the bar loved it because people would tend to order the most expensive drinks for their 'woes'. Some people actually got up anticipating BEING gonged so they could get their drink. It was all in fun and never necessarily reflected on how bad someone was. I saw some really good singers being gonged - including the host!

also to Tarzan and avgjoe...I say this respectfully...a "good singer" would have no problem with a "gender bender night" they don't have to resort to "making a fool out of themselves" to sing a song. If you look at my list of TEN subs. FIVE of them are "gender benders" ...Moondance(Van Morrison), desperado(the eagles), Can't get enough of your love(BARRY FREAKIN WHITE!), feel the fire(peabo bryson and teddy pendergrass) and Reasons(phillip Bailey and Earth Wind and Fire)

JMHO as both a professional vocalist( who's all about making the crowd happy) and as a former KJ.

Respect taken oneofakind, thanks. :) But my though wasn't saying that people would definitely ruin the song. And would purposely annoy the crowd ala Roseanne Barr and our national anthem years ago. I was thinking if they did try and sing it like the original artist, or not, and ruined or butchered the song, that it might take the sting out of the gong on a fun theme gong show type night. Someone just might try that night for a song they've always wanted to try, is again where I was trying to go with this.

I'm well aware of people that can do the opposite sex songs. It's done every night. Some turn out better than the original. I can get the higher pitches and my friends ask me to do female songs alot, like a Reba or Martina. We just generally save those for a home party night, or just singing quietly along with at the table watching and listening with your friends.

I never said they had to resort to "making a fool out of themselves". I didn't say they could or couldn't do a good job at the song. You have good points and I hope you now understand mine. A happy crowd, is a crowd that can laugh also.

Lonman,

I like your idea as well with the drink. It would bring that style of tshirts, "Will get gonged for drinks".

A radio show had a bit at a club "Paintball Karaoke" where instead of getting gonged, people got shot with a paintgun. I asked them if I could do a Marvin Gaye song and have my dad as the triggerman, or sing Nirvana and shoot myself.

I've attended ONE gong show, and it wasn't ran right at all. The host and the bar thought it was funny, the singers... not so much. most took it well enough. Including me.

Now this is due to the fact that the show was ran with the same kinda rules as the original Gong Show on TV. Three judges, and a host announcing the singers. The judges were the only ones that could gong, although they did go by audience participation.

One guy was so bad, he started to be boo'd and then he turned the audience right around to where they cheered him. He still came in dead last, but at least he didn't get gong'd!

"I" got gonged, and I thought I was doing pretty good. Didn't make it past the 2nd part of the 1st verse. Now when I got gonged, the judge had a smirk on her face, so she promptly got mooned by me, wearing my BITE ME boxers! LOL There was almost a riot with laughter over that one.

But there was still a lot of hurt feelings... as Oneofakind said, you have to know how to control the crowd, and that venue NEVER AGAIN did a gong show!

I missed the chance to go to that show, but from what I heard the place was packed to bursting point. There is a sushi bar on S. 1st here in Austin that apparently does gong karaoke on a Monday night. I found out about it a couple of weeks ago, should be a fun place to visit (and I don't even like sushi!)
