Yea Tim anybody that starts any new profession are just playing roles. It takes an emergency or something that drags out their true talents to make it work. Then they can say I Am One...
I learned that in Shore Patrol.

I followed the wedj.com link to find that you only seem to have an advertisement there trying to book gigs but no information on any existing gigs where someone might go to check out your "style" before they decided to hire you. Most "successful" KJ's have a web site where they list their weekly shows so people can find them and show up and spend money there. It's beginning to look like you don't have any regular shows at all. Could it be because you like to sell spots in your rotation and you've been fired from all of your gigs because of crazy whining complainers who don't appreciate getting skipped by your ego maniacal style of karaoke hosting???? Hmmmmmm! Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!!!
Maybe its because he is a pirate Bruce.
Why don't you give us a website of a successful show that you go to. There must be at least one?

It's amazing when you search what you can find.
Actually Nice job !! --no joking
WOW!!! That was 10 years ago!!! Add about 20 or 50 pounds to that, and I still sing that song once in a while (usually when requested). That particular video was produced by a woman named Maura. She made several compilation videos of other Karaoke Singers as some type of Art Project, and had it displayed in one of the SOHO museums for a short time.

I still say 'right here' is the best & cheapest entertainment in town, you can have it all... the whole stage to yourself at any time, the nice, funny crowd, as well as learning a lot without leaving your home

Rip, i thought everyone who is computerized is a pirate.
it's kinda crazy if you don't have at least one extra backup drive for emergencies and i'm sure most kjs don't have that 'extra' set of discs to make them legal.
-now of course it's thought of as since you're not using two sets simultaneously then you're not a pirate... but perhaps a better description would be a closet pirate.
...people can reason themselves to death and usually do to make their beliefs legit.
...so unless you run a disc based show completely without burns you are not a pirate...unless you unknowingly downloaded illegal songs from a 'legal' website.... i thought there were none in the U.S......hmm...
I personally could care less and would go visit anyones show here who is professional, disc based, computerized, or who plays filler music or burns.
For ME it's about the fun factor, not splitting hairs, as it is with most people. j.r.

no, everyone that's computerized is at best a violator of copyright. This is allowed for personal use under the Fair Use Act. We STRETCH that use for commercial use as long as we don't have a 2nd set in use MAKING MONEY or profiting us in any way.
You can split hairs all you want. But I won't be accused of piracy!

So the correct description for some KJ's would be
"COPYRIGHT INFRINGERS " the term pirate is so outdated --no ones wearing eyepatches anymore .......

hmm....i stand corrected Matt in terminology, although isn't illegal activity illegal and stretching the truth still lying??
..and i won't even speak about kjs who used to be on the dark side, but have returned to promote this industry in a positive way. People CAN change ,lol!
I could care less anyways, and I don't really care if some kj takes a bribe and i'm bumped to sing- i usually don't even pay attention to when i'm up...
..i'm usually too busy talking or eating. And since most kjs don't make very good money to begin with, i'd understand, and still tip them at the end of the show anyways if the service was good and they were kind to me... but that's just me.

well to me, one term is the "BAD" digital kind, and the other doesn't hurt the industry. Can anybody else see the difference? If not, I'll shaddup about it!

...and the justifiers of wrong doing always pull s**t outta thin air to justify their illegal actions.....
i wonder...if every kj bought (replaced) all their discs that went bad or wore out over the years, i wonder how many more manus we'd still have....???

Justifers of wrong? Not in any court tried law!
first of all, the manus replaced the ones that they still could for free... the problem is, you never knew when they'd not be able to. They certainly didn't tell us when they lost the rights to certain songs. So people were using their original discs, and then mailing them in if it got cracked or worn, only to be told "sorry, this disc is now discontinued"...
These very same manus used to tell us back in the day that it was OKAY to make copies of the discs and run off those, Then it was at least until you could get the disc replaced. They changed their stories faster than a kid on drag racing night.
With decades old technology, we had the ability to protect our investment. And while we were protecting our investment, those of us that were honest were buying more and more discs, increasing our songs capability, rather than replacing worn or skipping discs.
Venues started going copies and finally computer because they got tired of the increased pixelation of worn discs, and finally got tired of apologizing to singers that were used to singing their favorite songs because some numbskull broke the disc last night...

I've only needed to replace 2 discs in 15 years due to a crack caused by a faulty player, these were Chartbuster discs so were covered under their free replacement policy. If you take care of your discs, they do not get damaged.

I had one crack on me when I was cleaning it... still playable for awhile.
mostly it was other hosts that just were awful to them! those that get $8 an hour at a 7 night a week venue! I lost two that way. Swore I'd never again hand a disc to a host if it weren't a copy that I didn't implicitly trust.

My problem was with bleeding discs. I hated when a disc started getting that confetti look. Aaarg!

OK, so back to BRIBES, (not that the cat fighting wasn't fun!)
I've toyed with the bribe idea (or at least formalizing my policy around it). My show is supposed to be 9:30-1:30 but always overruns up to closing. I thought about offering up the final half hour as a 'pay to play' with pretty much anything goes. Some people want dance music, others want to sing. By having the bribe session after the regular show hours it might work out okay. The plan would be to take the bribe in and then if more money came in from someone else you would get bumped. Those who got bumped out completely could either be out of luck (and cash) or get their bribe refunded (probably a safer bet).
I should note this is at the same bar that fights occasionally happen at including the dent to the hood of my car!
Things that could keep the regular singers happy... using the bribe money to buy them a round at the start of the show next time (encouraging early repeat business).
Just a thought.
I know some here like the idea of a true and simple show and others want to experiment with the traditionally accepted idea of 'Karaoke Night'. I have venues where one thing works which would get me shot in another (I mean, seriously, they're packing heat!)
Buying the next singer's spot from them could definitely turn nasty without an arbiter, buying the whole rotation a round should diffuse all but the most ardent bribers.

I'm quite sure you would be right up after the fasten seatbelt light goes off to tell the pilot he sucks and like many hosts of the shows you attend the pilot will be a happy camper when you have exited the plane shouting "I'll never fly this airline again". I have flown quite often in my life and I have never had a reason to complain about a pilot. I guess I've just been very lucky. I've only been delayed for de-icing once and I'm pretty sure that all of us on the plane were happy to wait the required amount of time to ensure a safe take-off. Everyone waited the same amount of time in that situation. There are plenty of parts that go into be a KJ. Getting gigs, setting up and tearing down equipment, making song books, etc. The one specific past of being a KJ that I keep referring to is the actual running of the show after all of the other stuff has been taken care of. All the KJ has to do is make sure the song slips stay in the proper order so no one gets skipped and no one gets bumped ahead for any reason. I can't believe that it can be all that difficult. Maximum amount of slips for a 5 hour show would be about 70 slips. If you have 40 or 50 people in your rotation like someone has reported having; running the rotation should be even easier because you're only going to have one and a half rotations for the entire night. Let's face facts. The reason that KJ's like to make exceptions to a fair rotation is because they want to excercise their authority to make them feel like a big shot to someone. God forbid the poor KJ might have to say that he CAN'T Help out the poor little lady that just has to sing next. It would make him look powerless in the eyes of the damsel in distress. It's so much more of an ego boost to say "I am the KJ and I can do whatever I want at my show because it is my show and I don't care who gets pissed off and never comes back" as long as I get to feel like a BIG SHOT in front of a couple of people at my show who will think of me as their karaoke god. How sad!
Every time you reply you prove more and more that you have no clue what it takes to host a successful, busy karaoke show. The equipment, books etc. is the easy part. The hard part is detering bribers, whiners and big egos for 6 hours. Yes, it would be easy to host a 40 singer show given that they all showed up and had turned in a song at 8 o'clock when the show starts. I don't try to look like a big shot to anyone. The big shots are those that are singing. Most think that they are bigger shots than others whether it be with their money, looks, vocal ability or their ability to count singers in a rotation. What is sad are people like you that think that if they get pissed, throw a tantrum and tell a manager that anyone is gonna care. I hope for your sake that you started singing at the furthest show away from you so that as you continue to walk out of shows because you THINK you were being treated unfairly that you have fewer miles to travel to the next show that will eventually tick you off.

"Pay to play" I like it. I run an 8-2 show and the last hour is always when the most whining happens. Thanks!

When my show is over, it's over, unless I CHOOSE to go over. I make it clear to the custies that I am on my own time. I WILL take money to go over time, but I consider it PAY for MY TIME and make it clear to them. I try to let them know, also, that this is my JOB. It may be fun for them, but it is WORK for me. I tell them, "When you are done your job, at quitting time, do you stay for free?". Neither do I!
