Hey guys, thanks for the lively discussion. I was wondering if the rest of the country was like my area or if regular non-alcoholic karaoke existed elsewhere. It's a nice thought, maybe just not that practical. Karaoke may sell beer, but probably doesn't sell much pizza or burgers.

I think karaoke would fit in any place you have a somewhat noisy environment to start out with, and where food and drink are served...I'm surprised it is mostly just in bars (although having a place that stays open late can be a plus). The place Lonman mentions sounds interesting.

One place we'd go to was a bar & grill, and every or every other Sunday they'd have it and call it family karaoke. We liked and had a good size group going. We'd all eat while we were there with the kids. Also being able to have a beer if we wished. Anyone was allowed to sing. It was good, but I guess not that good for them, it lasted one summer. Come football season it was done.

But I'm not thinking the family / kid type venue isn't what you're lookin' for.

Ronnie you are welcome to check out my show on Thursday nights in Muscatine at One More Round. We don't have a huge following yet so plenty singing to be done some nights. Let me know what you want to sing if you decide to come and I'll try to have it for you as I am not set up to play disks at this time. You won't be disappointed with the sound of the system and the lights we have. It's a new bar with an 80's theme but play most any kind of karaoke except some heavy rap.

Hey there Ripman. Your show sounds like a good one. I'd really love driving down there to check it out some time. The bummer is that I work nights so I can't get out on many weeknights. Do you do any weekend gigs?

In my experience karaoke without alcohol is a bit like a hot dog without mustard - it can be done, but it's not as much fun

Ronnie, when the venue has no weekend bands planned, they ask me to entertain Friday and Saturdays. Luck would have it, they have a band every weekend now thru near the end of September. Unless there is a cancellation or they just decide that on the off night (only one band per weekend on one of the two nights) to have me play, it may be a while before I play on Friday or Saturday again. I'll pm you if I get a weekend gig.

Ripman, please let me know when a weekend gig comes up. Meanwhile, I might even take a Thurs. night off of work sometime in the near future. Things are a little slow at work, so it may be doable.

I guess Im about to find out!
I have a gig outside at a community yard sale tomorrow from 10am to 3pm.
No real steady audience except for the vendors.
If it rains, it's over before it begins!
We will be having a singers raffle, and a general raffle so mabye some people will stick around.
Florida on a hot summer day? I'm going to give it my best.
I suppose if people like it, then this will be a monthly non-alchoholic venue.
Wish me luck!

Dr. Argon good luck :D

I'd think it would be great family fun. Many people would love to have a chance to let their kids sing. Maybe you could encourage the kids by giving out free candy if they sing. I'd do it for a Klondike bar. LMAO

the biggest problem I found with running a family show, non alcoholic, is the parents inevitablly want to just drop the kids off with $5 each... the venue makes little to know money, and of course, you have to have either an edited songbook, or a VERY clear understanding of what songs have curse words in them. Either way, you are running a censored show.

Not saying that's a bad thing, just one more factor to throw in the mix.

I really found the lack of adult supervision thing the most challenging... I enjoyed having a show for the kids... there should be more of those kinda things! It's just darned hard to think of how to make it even break even! The shows I ran I donated my time as the cost of doing business... and tried to support my weekend show with the advertising for the included family Sunday afternoon show.

Babs, thanks!
That was funny, hope you don't mind if I use that line in the show.

Babs, you're not supposed to tell everyone you'd do "it" for a Klondike bar. We were talking about kids singing!

Yep! Knightshow was right!
The parents dropped off their kids and had them sing in order that they could get the prizes.
Mostly all kids singing whilist the parents wandered around.
Only six singers alltogether. Tons of work involved and very hot.
I will say that for my first show though, I think I pulled it off pretty good.
and my nervousness left me soon after I started, and I even managed to crack jokes that I didn't know was in me.

The singers raffle wasn't so good, because as each singer sang a song I entered them in the bucket.
Guess what! The same girl won 5 out of 8 prizes. Good for her, but not the others.
Well anyways, thanks all for your advice and encouragement.

One thing you can do in the future is have a 1 entry per round... but yeah, if you have twenty singers and they get up three or four times, they might get lucky. I had a guy win a set of cdgs one time, some extras I had, and darned if he didn't win the freebie home player I gave away! I was just astounded! Glad you got some good experience out of it, and kudos to you for looking at it that way!!

Hello All,

with the lack of Alcohol, you're pretty much relegated to private parties. So you have to take your time to market to private functions. Some Schools have 'teen night' where once a month the students can come and dance. Good for Karaoke too.
