First of all, I just want to thank everyone for participating in my threads and answering my numerous questions.

Several weeks ago, I was itching for a home karaoke system. Not knowing any better, I was thinking of getting a USED all-in-one karaoke system (Vocopro, Cavs, RSQ, etc.)

A new mid-range system would run around $400 - $500. A used equivalent model would cost around $300 shipped. So as I was learning from all of you, I quickly realized that I can get a much better system, with an equivalent budget, buying used gears.

Again, keep in mind that this is only for inside, home usage in a small 15x15 room:

EDIT: If buying everything new from Musicians Friend, it would cost me $300 (speakers) + $100 (mixer) + $200 (Fx) + $150 (mic) + $50 (cables) = $800

I'm not sure how the studio monitors will sound compared to something a bit larger. Monitors can possibly sound harsh because they are designed to be VERY clear and crisp. For what you paid you could use them as speakers for your computer or entertainment system if you decide to get a little larger speakers as the addiction progresses.

I'd read from people here that for a small room (and home practice) at set of monitors as output speakers would suffice. So I was on the Gearslutz forum and saw a thread saying that Musicians Friend is selling B-stock KRK RP5 G2 for $59/each. They also had the RP6 (all yellow model) for $99/each. Free shipping if the order is over $100. So I grabbed a pair.

I'm expecting to receive them on this upcoming Monday.

I was also interested in building a home recording studio, so the monitors seem to be a logical choice. And now all I need is an interface (lots of them came with recording/mixing/editing software) and a condenser mic, and maybe a mic preamp and I'm set!!!

EDIT: you can get a new or used Sennheiser e845 mic on eBay for around $50-$75. They just don't seem to be as popular as some of the other models in the same retail price range.

Don't know!!! The speakers won't get here until tomorrow, Monday, and the mic won't get here until end of the week.

This is an amazingly bizarre statement. Studio monitors are designed to be as accurate as possible. Meaning they treat all frequencies the same (as flat of a response as possible) so that you hear coming out exactly what you put into them. This is the goal of all speaker manufacturers and models, not just studio monitors.

If studio monitors sound harsh, it's probably that you're not used to hearing what accurate reproduction of musich sounds like. To me, and this may just be me, I find it almost comical that the suggestion is being made that you should use less accurate speakers because the sound will be more pleasing.

I don't know where this latest urban legend has come from that Studio Monitors are somehow not fit for live vocals. Hello?? What do you think you're listening to in the control room when you're tracking a vocalist?

I think you will be very please with a studio monitor... In most respects they are the same as a PA monitor except it hasn't been "ruggedized" for mobile use.

Looks to me like you've got the makings of a very nice recording studio!
