Good advice has been given to ya. So I believe you've got your answers. In having your own cd's, I've never had a KJ refuse to play one, it helps thier show.

In purchasing cds, I've had sucess on ebay as well as bummers. If you go this route be aware with the used ones. There isn't an option that says copied in the "condition" title. So alot of them have to put "used" in this catagory. My items have come as copies.

After awhile of buying discs, you'll have a favorite company and you'll tend to stick with them. I'm partial to ChartBuster. Myself, I don't think I'll ever buy a regular disk again. To many songs you pay for that you won't sing. Your first response from Lonman, he gave you some sites where you can get custom discs. I'd go this route so you can pick every song for the disc. 10 songs @ $1.99 each and $5 core charge. I'm not sure on shipping and taxes. I haven't tried this yet, but I will soon. I just found my tenth song. And I think it was mentioned to me in a different thread that ChartBuster has even thrown in a free clearance disc with the order. Once you start buying though, it gets kinda addicting.

And before you know it, YOU'LL be a KJ! That's how I started. Hubby finally told me my hobby had to start paying for itself and here I am!

best idea is to bring your own discs. You can get them from on-line sources or from other kj's too.

It's best not to leave the bar that you love and can get a disc with the song YOU want for $15.00

#1- buy your own discs and #2 --make copies and don't bring the originals.

Staying current and having a well rounded library of songs is important.

Having a better sounding system would be the most important to me. Small selection good sound beats big selection and bad system.

It it always good to have your own collection of karaoke disc. I always bring them along when I go to sing. Now that I found out that the places that I sing have dvd players with usb port ; I load the songs in my old 2gb pen-drive.

No more burned disc to carry, just a flash-drive

I'm no singer but I do enjoy going to karaoke with my friends to listen. It seems to me that the same people always seem to be singing the same songs every week so why does a karaoke DJ need a lot of songs? It seems like they would only need a few hundred yet they have tens of thousands of songs that never seem to get sung at all. I was at one bar where the karaoke book looked like an encyclopedia. They guy had so many songs that he had 3 binders just to hold them all. Each book had songs from one third of the alphabet I guess. It made me glad that I don't sing. It would be a nightmare trying to find a song to sing out of 100,000 songs or more. How could you pick just one?

Unfortunately Joanie some KJs have nothing else to offer except for boasting that they have a huge library of songs. Which, BTW, if they have 100,000 songs they most likely obtained them illegally. The size of your library should not be the best you have to offer. A good KJ can have a very successful show with a few thousand songs.

When I go out singing I prefer someplace that has quality sound and a KJ that has a personality but not over the top. I could find songs to sing in the smallest of libraries.

It's so true. If we actually kept track of the songs sung we'd find it is the same few hundred sang all the time with only a few people singing off the beaten track songs.

Every once in a while I'll get the person that says, you have to get so & so song. It drives me crazy because I'll get the song and no one will ever sing it or they'll try it once and decide they don't like it. I pretty much stick to just getting the new popular songs now. It's just a waste of money otherwise.

If your only attribute is a HUGE book, then that is what you'll use to sell your show. (In other words, if you don't have a resume of satisfied clients but only a resume that is overflowing with shows that have failed, you have to find some way to try to separate your show from the others, and a ridiculous number of songs is the next best thing....mind you, 99% of those songs will never be sung, but never mind that ) That is one thing that the bar owner can actually look at and feel -- many are not experienced in finding a great KJ...so maybe it's out of ignorance that these 100,000 song jokers get jobs. They have a very minimal investment and often throw some other gear together and appear all shiny-faced in front of the manager/owner and use that magic number to wrangle a gig. Sadly, many of those gigs last six weeks or less and sour the owner/manager on karaoke who then say, "Karaoke doesn't work here."

Perhaps the manager/owner is just too lazy to actually fully investigate the other bars/KJs in the area and compare shows, or has no idea how to actually evaluate the quality of the show they're putting into their place. Worse yet, they get a recommendation from someone who isn't qualified to make a recommendation.

I can't help but think that this is the case in our area - there is a trail of soured owners/managers who believe after putting one of these jokers in their place for six weeks without success that karaoke won't work there. Too bad for them. Maybe it's that the good KJs are already in place making beaucoup bucks for owners and the chaff is still flying around trying to find a place to land.
