I had a video on Myspace of our waitresses dancing on the bar to YMCA. I got an email from Myspace that Village People/name (I forget the name) had bitched.
I had to delete it and lost all rights to upload until I meet certain requirements. Ok it is gone but we wont be playing anything by Village People either at DJ or karaoke.
While I understand copyrights when are these people going to realize that we are their promoters and ambassadors? If they are not singing something at karaoke or not playing it at DJ shows then people are not buying their CD'S.

I completely agree! And that's the message that needs to be sent to them. From now on, we will not allow ANY of your music to be played, not even by visiting customers. WHen asked why, we will tell them that you control your copyrights the way you see fit, and we will no longer support you!"
Prince did the same thing about a video of some baby rocking to his tunes... was QUITE the uproar!

This is because copyright law has not been updated for the internet age. It is natural for people to share their good times, and frequently those good times involve music. A video of a woman dancing to YMCA, or a baby dancing to Prince certainly does not threaten the copyright of the artists. No one is going to copy the video for the music here.
The sharing of art has been done throughout human history... its how art grows and changes forms to become other things. For the first time in human history we have the greatest sharing medium in history, but due to a drive for profits, this is being stifled.
Yes, piracy is bad, but IMHO this is just as bad.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this is going to be resolved anytime soon, and has hosts who regularly use music to bring good times to folks it affects us greatly.

I would be interested to know the reasoning that artists/publishers/producers have for demanding that their music or product be removed from YouTube, particularly since there is no profit motive on the part of the poster. I would think that the more people who are exposed to their music/product, the better for them as artists. Stone age mentality.

FYI At Shorty's Grill we had a weekly tradition where the waitresses would dance on the bar to YMCA. It gave them a chance to unwind and bond with their customers. It was all done in taste and was very popular with all.
While I am not getting overly excited about the Myspace incident I just get tired of we people on the bottom taking the brunt of the corporate mania and greed. I contacted VP thru their web site and this is a copy of the email. It will be interesting to see if they even respond.
I encourage all here to contact them too.
Hello: This is not a hate mail or belligerence. I am a DJ KJ At one of my venues we had a custom of [playing YMCA and gals would dance on the bar. I had a video on Myspce of this. I had to delete it because Village People contacted Myspace for copyright infraction.
While I understand this I want you to understand something. We are your promoters and ambassadors. If your songs are not being played by DJ'S then people are not buying your CD'S. I regret to inform you we will not be playing anything by Village People at our shows.
Regards
Ollie Smith

What a crock! If I or MrD's Entertainment was lucky enough to have someone playing my songs or enjoying themseleves to my music....then I would be happy that it is being of service to someone. It would be PROMOTING my product for Gosh Sakes!!! Let's take that away, what a great idea. People are absolute MORONS!!!

That is preposterous!! Can you please post the link so we can e-mail them in your defense? Really, in their own defense. if you want people to enjoy your music, they need to be exposed to it. It seems like common sense to me.

Actually, Youtube is making money off the Village People or any artist for that matter through the advertisements from the site. As I see it Youtube should be paying a fee for the copyright material on its site. So I can see artists biatching about it. The people who download their material may not be making a profit off it but Youtube and its advertisers sure do.

I think they're making a move in the right direction. I had never heard that Chris Brown song before and because I watched this great wedding march video, I actually will go on to Napster or Rhapsody today and download it to my wedding playlists.

Yeah Ollie, why not send a note to myspace / youtube and tell them of how Chris Brown's management acted on the amateur video, and did the click to buy thing... they'll make money off YOUR video!

I can see part of the issue.
Maybe if the girls were in bikinis....or...
Maybe it should have been gay men dancing....end of issue.

Last year Chris Martin of Coldplay said he didn't consider the band had really made it yet as every time he goes into a karaoke bar there are only about 2 of their songs in the books. He says he would like to see 8 to be happy. LIke him or not, at least he gets it on that issue. Don't know if he would come after Ollie or not, however.

I'm starting to do more with Facebook. Ya know what blows my mind is this. On my Myspace page I have most of the local bands and bands from all over. The rest are music lovers who even record on Myspace. It is people that live eat and sleep music.
But according to the media it all about sex and crap. Why any band would want to go after a fellow singer or DJ or somebody that plays their music is totally beyond me. It shows an ignorance of the internet not mentioning a total PR fiasco.
Today we were beating the bushes and talked to the event planners in the biggest Hilton and Marriott hotels in Fort Collins. I relayed this incident to everybody I came in contact with today. We used to have a saying in the electronics repair industry. You can have 9 good satisfied customers but one bad or unsatisfied customer erases the nine good ones. A bad rep travels fast.
