I'm ready to hear real viable suggestions. What do you have?

IF you're really interested in practical solutions for improving, you would go back, re-read, and take to heart the advice given to you in this thread.

But you're not are you? That's because it would mean taking an honest look at yourself and the way you're operating your business, and that's HAAAAAAARD!

You don't have the guts to be honest with yourself or anyone else.

That's called DENIAL = Don't Even Notice I Am Lying

Grow up and grow a pair, missy.

Does anyone have any practical solutions on how we can either improve or eliminate the problem. I'm sick and tired of my investment in time and money that i have put into my shows, not meaning much to bar owners.

I have recently read some articles about certain groups trying to sue KJs and bar owners over illegal music. Do you think this will actually go anywhere? Has anyone taken any individual actions toward stopping known illegal multiriggers? If so what have you done or what would you like to do or recommend doing? Has anyone considered mailing anonymous letters to them threatening to turn them in? Would that be enough to make you stop? KJs that use one hard drive are a problem but the multiriggers are much bigger. Is this idea over the edge?

Do you really think only top notch KJs read and post in here? I would put money on the fact that there is every type of described KJ at least reading this forum. There could be some that want to improve. There could also be many that could gives a rats behind about changing anything or the actual quality of their show. They are perfectly happy with the little bit of money they make.

I am interested in stopping or at least greatly reducing these KJs. I'm ready to hear real viable suggestions. What do you have?
I've tried reporting illegal hard drives being sold, Ebay and Craigslist are pretty good about getting them now, but the sellers have gotten smart and put the auctions up for 1 day... so it's hard to stop the sale. They still go after the sellers, who return under different IDs.

Nothng can be done with the current copyright situation as far as illegal kjs (or kjs that run illegal)... SC and many of the other manus have their hands tied due to the nature of the reproduction they themselves made. Under current copyright law, the owners of the ORIGINAL song have to sue for infringement, not the karaoke manus, who only have permission to redo the song in their style... but not to be able to copyright the work. That's why the current legislation in Phoenix is interesting as they're going after the copyrighted trademark! We'll have to see how this all comes out!

As for the bars, I've patiently tried to explain to bar owners/venue managers that when the whole thing comes shaking down, the venues themselves might be targetted for hiring those that are known pirates, so take your chances on the $50 a night guys! Many don't care, and of course want you to lower your rates to that level. In addition to the legitimacy of my collection, there's also my skill behind the mixing board, microphones, and general sound, as well as how to run a show... now many pirates can do this to a greater or lesser degree... so there's honestly nothng you can say or do to convince these kind of venues anyway. So I don't even try anymore! The moment they mention the $50, I smile, and wish them well and walk out! Sometimes I do try, but for the most part... nope, they've had pirate shows, and that's the kind of thing they expect.

Guys she TOLD you where she was!

Karaoke Hell.

That's just before the road starts winding up Orodruin to Sauron's Forge on the plains of Gorgoroth. Just off the causeway between there and Barad-dur.

Been there once. The bathrooms were dirty.

I have many that want my jobs because they can't keep jobs.

I can't be compasionate about too many other KJs when you have to constantly watch your back from the next attack.

The nail on the head. "They think they sound good." As do you, and I and everyone else. Ask any KJ if their show is good and they are not going to reply "Oh no...my show sucks".

You say attack but its called competition. Many here have posted that they have had other KJs bid for their spot to no avail. If their are a limited amount of venues you can't expect other KJs to avoid bidding for your venue just because you have a show there. If they think their's is better and it is then they have every right to take your spot.

The market in areas simply gets saturated and its not just because of pirates. I have been a wedding DJ for 15 years and 10 years ago it was common to book 70-100 weddings per year with very little effort. Now to do that takes honed sales techniques and a lot of work. Yes many people often go with the other guy because he is cheaper and unfortunately they learn a lesson when they don't get good service. Those are the people I end up booking for their second daughters wedding because of the lesson they learned from the first. Bar venues learn the same lesson when they hire "the cheap" guy.

There are many karaoke hosts around here. It is almost saturated. However there is no show that compares to Cabaret Karaoke. We have a better than average system and know how to setup in the worst conditions and get the the most out of it. We have about 14k of karaoeke which is an "Honest: selection that has been trimmed for the favorites over a ten year period. We also have about 9k of DJ?Dance music top 150 for every decade.

Cabaret Karaoke can provide any format for any party wedding or karaoke show. We packout bars or clubs with our tempo and style. We provide entertainment for any age or genre. We do not worry about the competition although we monitor things that they might be doing different that works.I have friends who got the big hard drives then asked me how to print books and I just laughed at them. They have to put money back into their system and buy what I have to compete with me in any way shape or form THEY DONT DO IT!!! What competition?????

I will!
One of my shows (the one with the difficult ethnic owner) is terrible!
The reason is that the owner forces me to mix terrible sound. I mean HOOORIBBLE! Absolutely no bass, and because of that, the highs and mids are almost painful so I have to back them off too. Either that, or turn the whole thing down so the singers literally cannot hear the music over the crowd.
But alas! He pays the bill so I do what he wants.
Thankfully, most people know how the owner is and have many have been to my other shows where it sounds awesome!
This is where the rest of my talent comes out. Even with far better sound (not system!) the other venue doesn't pack them in like I do. Proof that you need to have ALL areas covered. Just having a great sounding system won't cut it anymore than having 100,000 songs.

It sounds horrible where you are. I'm trying to get a feel for what's going on. It sounds like a pool full of sharks in a feeding frenzy. Is it the norm for everyone, even KJ friends, to try to steal gigs or is it pirates and undercutters causing the problem?

I've sung on friends crappy systems LMAO If they don't want to spend the money to upgrade I figure that is their decision. I'm usually just there to have fun and don't care.

You have never driven past another KJs job on your night off just to see how they were doing? Never... I have better things to do with my time than drive by on a night when I am free.

Another KJ has never come into your job to pass out their info to steal your singers for their job? I've seen that happen at several shows. In fact, I had an incident at 1 show where I had just started... The KJ that I had replaced, came back, begging the Management for his job back. Throughout my show, he was badmouthing how I ran my show, and he was grabbing "his" regulars on the side, and telling them to complain to the Management. I was replaced a few months later (for other reasons), but he never got the show back.

You have never had another KJ try to undercut your price to get your job? I don't do shows that often, so this question does not apply to me. I have seen several KJs undercut all the time. There's absolutely NOTHING you can do to stop that from happening, so get over it already. It's a fact of life... learn to live with it and continue to concentrate on YOUR SHOW. If someone is going to come in and try to steal your show by undercutting your price, then 1 of 2 things will happen... The Manager is CHEAP, and only cares about the bottom line figure, or he likes you and your style enough to say, "No thanks... I'll stick with who I have."

Nobody knows a KJ they would never recommend to anyone? I know plenty that I would never recommend to anyone. What's the point of this question?????? I would only mention the names of people that I WOULD recommend.

Nobody knows a pirate KJ working down the street? Again... What's the point of this question???? Worry about YOUR show, and how you operate it. Don't obsess over something that you have NO CONTROL over.

Another KJ has never stabbed you in the back? One KJ tried doing that to me once... And I went to one of his shows and created a scene in front of everyone over it. And, I never went to another show of his after that. I cut off all communications with that person.

When you go job hunting you are the only KJ looking at that job? When i hear of a job opening 20 other KJs are already in line. Like throwing a piece of bread in a carp pond. It's an all out feeding frenzy. Don't turn your back and wear your body armor. Job openings for KJs are not usually advertised in my area (with the exception of a few ads in Craigs List). Other than that, you won't find 20 KJs lined up a 1 Bar/Venue looking for work. We walk into places, we talk to someone of authority. We give them our business cards. How do you look for work as a KJ???

What do you do, calmy sit there and draw straws to see who gets the job? Again... How do you go about looking for work as a KJ? Are you in some area where there's only 1 Bar or Venue within 20 or 40 miles, and that's the place to be?

I'm in karaoke hell and everyone responding is in karaoke utopia. Everything is just peachy and ALL KJs are best friends everywhere holding hands and sitting around the camp fire singing together and sharing jobs?

Something is wrong with the picture you paint. I can't believe it. I don't believe it. I'm not saying you don't have any competition. I'm saying it can't be as rosy as you claim like the merry old Land of OZ.

And you still haven't answered my question!!!!

My purpose is to see if and how many other good KJs are facing the same bad KJs and to determine how wide spread the bad KJ problem really is.

Does anyone have any practical solutions on how we can either improve or eliminate the problem. I'm sick and tired of my investment in time and money that i have put into my shows, not meaning much to bar owners.

WHY are you even quoting me (or entire posts of mine)??? Once again, you have quoted an entire (rather lengthy) post of mine, and you didn't address one thing that I asked.... with the final question being, "Where are you from?"

Go check the other threads about Piracy, and Illegal KJs, and Manufacturers suing for Copyright Infringement, and what suggestions do you have to stop..., etc...
There's about 10 active threads going on with those thoughts right now (and have been for the past few weeks/months/years/millenium (sp?)).

Let me get this straight or try to.

If you run a good show, pirates and undercutters are no big deal.

If you lose jobs to pirates and undercutters it's no big deal.

Only good KJs are on the forum and pirates and undercutters are OK and no big deal.

If we bury our heads in the sand pirates and undercutters will disapper.

If i close my eyes pirates and undercutters can't see me. If i can't see them and they can't see me everything is good.

From the responses so far if everyone has a job pirates and undercutters don't matter and are a nonissue. We can't beat them so lets join them. We can all live together as long as they stay on their side of the road. And everyone here is in agreement. Do a good show and the pirates won't bother you.

Well i do a good show and they do bother me.

Wait i'm starting to get it.

Your eyes are getting heavy. You are getting very sleepy. Repeat after me:

Pirates and undercutters are our friends and we are one big happy family. Just do a good show.
Pirates and undercutters are our friends and we are one big happy family. Just do a good show.
Pirates and undercutters are our friends and we are one big happy family. Just do a good show.
Pirates and undercutters are our friends and we are one big happy family. Just do a good show.
Pirates and undercutters are our friends and we are one big happy family. Just do a good show.
Pirates and undercutters are our friends and we are one big happy family. Just do a good show.
Pirates and undercutters are our friends and we are one big happy family. Just do a good show.

Pirates and undercutters are nothing to worry about. They need to eat too. Ignoring the problem will make it go away. Just do a good show.

Yes ma-ster...i see it all very clear-ly now, you are right...take me to your lea-der. I will do as you say.
{insert the zombie robot emoticon here} :withstupid:

This is what your responses sound like to me.

For some reason I am reminded of Billy Madison...

"... What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
