Hello, I'm Kirby, and I'm a singer. I sing four or five nights a week, and practice at home with MIDI Karaoke files. I'm here because I'm interested in learning about the various versions of songs out there (which are full versions, which have backing vocals and which don't, which may be availiable in different keys....)

Thank you.

heya Kirby!

My favorite site to go to for stuff like that is the retailers that offer "reviews" of their karaoke discs. Karaoke.com is one of them.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome in Kirby!

Knightshow is rite... you need to check them out.

there are far too many versions out there... some are "Radio Edit" while others might be the "Full Length" ("Rapper's delight" is a good example of this). Some are in different keys... Sound Chioce is good about labeling what key a song is in and key changes if any in the song.. but most good karaoke players have a built in key changer (usually +/- 6 steps give or take)

If you want vocals, look for CD+Gs that are labeled as either having a "Vocal Track" copy of each song or as being a "MultiPlex" or "MPX" disc... These have the vocals on one channel and the music on the other so all you have to do is turn off the vocal channel when you feel you are ready.

Karaoke.com is a very good on-line source... but for what you are wanting to do your best bet is to find a local karaoke supply store like "Doo Wop Shop" in Louisville, KY. They will usually have demo cds you can listen to before you buy.

hope this helps... or at least points you in the rite direction

Hi Kirby

You'd probably enjoy Singer's Showcase. Check it out and maybe submit a song.

Tarzan, thanks, I actually want versions without backing vocals. My styling of Willie Nelson's "Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground" was developed by singing to a MIDI version, and my phraising doesn't match the backing vocals on the CDG. Does the MX switch take out all recorded vocals, or just the lead vocal? I know there are some duet songs with the other voice on them, and others without, for one to bring his own duet singer.

Babs, I actually did sample the Showcase. I would love to submit some of my own stylings. I tried YouTube, but my computer doesn't like the software needed. I did post through a friends computer, one song, sung to MIDI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rrjmUIjAB8

It's several years old, and I have grown in skill since then.

Sorry Kirby... My bad..

For no background vocals, Priddis is generally your best bet... but be careful with them... sometimes you find that they won't have the lyrics display either due to licensing issues.

Thanks Tarzan. I actually sing "Angel flying Too Close" from memory, as the MIDI file didn't have them. Probably why my styling doesn't follow thw CDG.

I enjoy pulling up the MIDI, canceling the "vocal" instrument, and finding my way to a melody. When I do these out at a bar, the backing vocals get in the way.

I know this is a time honored way to do songs (SEE: Linda Rhonstadts re styling of Mike Nesbit's "Different Drum")

Think I'll see what's needed to upload some of my singing.

Thanks for your help :D
