Does anybody know of a version of 99 Luftballons, in German. I have had a request for it for the 2nd time from a girls from Germany. Ace has this one, German Karaoke CDG FUNCD024 - Best of Neue Deutsche Welle Vol. 1, but it is MIDI and sounds like it. I see a version on SelectATrack from World Of Karaoke, it is MIDI too. Anybody know of a good version?
Kinda baffles me though, that if you are German and here speaking English, shouldn't they be able to translate it as they go, or know it both ways anyways?
Thanks,
Felix the KJ

The Best of Neue Deutsche Welle version is not "great" but not exactly the worst version out there (musically). I got all three of the CDs in the series and get a song or two sung in German every month. Sometimes I can get a lot more as many as 4-5 songs sung in German on one night.
A lot of the singers are not fluent in the other language and the lyrics are more important than for regular songs. This is the same for many of my singers when the sing songs in Spanish.
Many songs are not exacly 100% literal translations, but altered to sound more musical. Remember for many words there are multiple translations, and some fit much better than others with the music.
Midi is a technology that is not automatically poor sound quality but sadly it often is.

What a great question! I was just thinking the other day that it would be nice to have the all German version since that was a big a hit or even bigger where I grew up.

Thanks Dr. Fred.
If that is the best version, that is the best version. Hopefully I will be surprised and someone will know of a better one. For me, like most kj's, I pride my self on having good versions of the songs I have. Sometimes, just because somebody makes the only vesion of the song, doesn't mean it is worth playing at your show.
Maybe in this situation, the customers comfort outweighs my comfort and ego of playing a song that my ears knows is of sub-par quality. The happyness this may bring to the two german girls would definately help me get over this, if it works out that way.
I run a tight show, and usually stick to my rules. I am flexible, so I use my discretion to make changes as necessary. The bottom liine is this, When you see someone hand you the mic with a big smile on their face, and all of their friends, and everyone else is going crazy, playing that version was a great thing to do.
I am going to Ace tomorrow to pick up the Chartbuster August Pop disc that wasn't available last week when I got the country disc. I have a free disc coming with my frequent buyer type plan, If it is the only one, I will probably pick it up tommorrow.

I have an awesome German version of this, but it's very VERY hard to find, and it's highly unlikely you don't have the hardware needed to play it:
Pioneer LaserKaraoke (Yep... LaserDisc!)
The version is amazing! the video is pretty cute, too.

I just ripped my first (and only) karaoke laserdisc to avi last year! Chris LeDoux original artist pioneer! I still have a couple of dozen movie LDs that I haven't replaced on DVD (or Blu now) that get a spin every now and then.

It seems to me that it wouldn't be all that difficult to swap out the cdg files and just combine the music from one of the English Versions with the CDG file with the German lyrics. You might have to just make a time adjustment for the beginning of the mp3 so the lyrics would sync up correctly. Just an idea for you to try.

probably a no. Even if the tempo is very close just speeding up or slowing down a second or two throughout the song would make the lyrics timeing unusable by the end of the song.
Even a half second off on lyrics sync is very noticable.

Also worth noting, someone mentioned translation. I like "99 Luftballons" in German quite a bit. The English lyrics are actually very different from the original German; they're not a straight--up translation at all. Very good record, though! Hope the German folks are happy with it.

Beggars can't be choosers.
Someone can always make their own graphics file in German and replace the english version. Many ways to skin a cat if you really want to eat cat.

I have done a few tracks by vocal removal, and created graphics files. It is a little difficult to time the words corrctly when listening to a no-vocals version.
Even if you know the song well and can sing it to the music tapping keystrokes at the appropriate time is not easy.
Note I say not impossible but just not easy (at least for me).
If you are making a graphics file, sync the words to a copy of the track with the vocals (ie the one before vocals are removed) it is a lot easier.
For this song it is probably best to try to sync it to a version that you can find with and without vocals in English, and sync the German lyrics to the English singing.

Hello All,
I never had the German version of the song but I did have a German come into my bar. I always made her sing it in German.
She sounded pretty cllsoe to the original!
