Greetings.......I've been singing karaoke off and on for years, participated in a couple of Meetup.com karaoke groups, then bought a karaoke machine for my dad on a whim, which he loved. The machine eventually ended up with me and I bought another one for mom & dad so I wouldn't have to haul the machine back and forth to Connecticut every time I visited them. Anyway.....I saw someone here mention how addictive buying CD+G's on eBay is, and that is for sure. I've built up a collection that won't set any records but is big enough to satisfy a large home party full of karaoke addicts. Recently I set out a shingle as a KJ part time, just for fun and to bring in a few extra bucks now and then.
And that's my story. This place is amazing. I learned as much about KJ'ing in half an hour or so of reading through this forum as I have in several years of karaoke-ing on my own. Thanks.
Dave

Welcome Dave.
Pretty cool you singin' with your folks. I only think about singing with my kids. Not my parents. I think I'll have to get some discs for my Dad's liking and do the machine road trip like you use to. I think he'd enjoy it. Thanks for the idea.

My mother and father used to fight over the microphone. Literally. I was hoping they'd be interested in karaoke, but not that interested. My mother can hardly see now due to macular degeneration, and doesn't hear all that well, so the karaoke has kind of faded away up north. I recall one time when I was singing "Out Of My Head," which is a fairly obscure song by Fastball ("The Way") that I've never heard ANYBODY do at karaoke besides me, and my mother said "That's a lovely song" after I was done. Considering that her response was usually "what on earth was THAT?" to most songs that I sing, I considered that a huge compliment to Fastball.....and told them as much when I signed up for their mailing list at their Washington, DC show a few months ago.

No problem. We're a musical family; I'm a classically-trained composer, my twin brother plays sax, clarinet, and guitar and does a lot of songwriting, and my sister has been singing in choirs for years. Karaoke was a natural fit.
In reference to another thread on this forum, however, I try to avoid Adam Sandler's car song and Clarence Carter's "Strokin'" when the family is gathered 'round the machine. I have an inordinate amount of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Matt Monro, Judy Garland, Doris Day, Billie Holiday, etc. to keep the 'rents happy.

Then when the family is around, and you won't sing those two songs, you definitely want to avoid Rodney Carrington's "Show Them to Me" song.

Hi Dave & welcome! I agree, this is an Amazing place!... I'm not even a KJ myself but from just hanging in the tech forums, I learned so much... it may be useless information for me but I just love learning & reading all the techy stuff

Hilarious. I'll take that advice.

Thanks, yes I agree, this place is amazing, I stumbled across it the other day and was stuck here reading messages for over an hour until my eyes glazed over I would have felt bad not joining and contributing at that point.
