I thought about this a year ago, and everything I read made things clear as mud whether or not it was legal to copy my cdg's onto a computer. It seems now to be the 1:1 rule of thumb is OK. I agree with that. Now how do I start?
Other than e-mail & intenet searching, I'm a computer illiterate (I'm 53 and my kids are gone, so no technical help here). I have about 6,000 songs. Probably won't see 10,000. I want to copy my songs onto a laptop and print songbooks. Right now I list by song title and artist, but would like to list by disc also (at least for MY book). I don't want a book that's a million pages, so would like a 2 column page.
As far as the hosting program, it must have key change, tempo change would be nice, but have lived without it so far. Occasionally I get a disc brought in, so would like to be able to play them, and also some warm-up music from cd's. In-between music would be nice too. I know you are all looking at me funny now, but where I come from, my bars Like the quiet time between songs. But that doesn't fly in the city, so have never played there..... It has to be easy to figure out. I read your posts about doing this and that, and it flies right over my head. What's that they say about "Old dogs and tricks"? Someone said I needed a price range. I'm thinking about $1,000 or so. Can I do it? And what kind of computer do I get?
I'm also thinking about downsizing my sound equipment. I mainly play small to medium sized bars and my stuffs just getting too heavy. I can always break out the big sound for larger venues. I'm thinking about a Peavey xr8600 (42 lbs.) with Peavey pr12n speakers (33 lbs.). Anybody using these? Are they compatible or is it too much power for a 12" speaker? Will I need a sub? That's a lot for one post

#1 - You'll have to take your CDG's and convert them to a mp3+g file ( called ripping them). There are a few programs out their ..I use AUDIOGRABBER and you'll find tons of information here and on the web to get you started.

#2) - Once you get all your songs into MP3+G format there are a few HOSTING programs out there that can do what you need and also print books.
depending on you budget and needs you can download FREE software to play mp3+g or spends upwards of $300 to get something a little more fancier .

#3) If you looking to get some lite weight speakers opt for the PR15 from Peavey versus the 12" -- in the long run you'll be much more happier with the added base response.

Once you get an idea and have searched these topics here and still have questions - I think if you were to ASK specific questions on seperate topics you'll get more and better answers. .. TO START what type of computer do you have now ? You will need one with a DRIVE that can READ and BURN CDGS. post it here and we can see if we can get you started on you way to computerization

Thanks for your reply. Sorry about the length. I'm using an Acer TravelMate 2480, but I would really like to start fresh on the computer that will be running my show (which is not this one).

As for the speakers, I've been running the same 15" Peaveys for 18 years. I was just hoping for something lighter. Is there a good crankable speaker stand out there that might make my life easier? Thanks

Hi Maryoke, I use the On-Stage crankable speaker stands for my JBL Eon G2 15" speakers, and they work like a charm. You can even use a battery operated drill on them instead of hand cranking them up, (although I've never had to), because they crank up very easily. The hosting program I use is Compuhost, it's a great program, makes life alot easier, but it is a little pricey. I use that along with CDGRIP (free), to rip my songs to computer. I also use Fasttracks V2 Songbook Creator in conjunction with Compuhost for my songbooks. Once the songs are ripped, the book is created by a couple of clicks of the mouse. The Fasttracks V2 is a little pricey also, but again, it makes life a WHOLE LOT less stressful. Just to let you know, I'm NOT a computer whiz by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I'm at best, a hunt and peck type of guy. That's why I chose the things I've told you about. As far as equipment, you can't get any lighter than the Bose L1 series. Great sound without all the back breaking equipment.

So it looks like for about $280 + computer I can get this done. I think it was Karaokware.com that even showed pics how to make the connections. I can maybe do this!

As for the 15" speakers, I'm convinced. I've seen them listed at 32, 37, & 42 lbs. I wonder what the TRUE weight is?

As for the bose, I've never been a bose fan, and when I looked at the price, I saw why..... Does anyone actually use the Bose system??

Yes, Maryoke, of course you'll need the "small" stuff, like the monitor for lyrics with vga connections, OR have a vga,rca converter. but that's all the small stuff, after you get the MAIN things. Computer, speakers, mixer, etc.
