It's talent.
Some people have it, some don't.
Talent is what makes a bad show better, and a good show great.
You can have all the best monitors, video screens, microphones and a huge library. IMHO if the host sucks, the show is going to as well.

Yes there would be no show if I did not show up (not that they couldn't get someone else to fill the spo so I am not egotistical that way). If the singers did not show up, there would be NO SHOW! I am not there to be the entertainer, I am there to facilitate the singers that come in to support said show in the best manner possible.

One night its the girl with the double d's and killer voice , another night its the 75 yr old man/woman belting out tunes. Then there is the BRIDAL party or BIRTHDAY Party...it's the regulars who keep singing the same old songs or maybe the bartender who dances on the bar when they sing. One night it could be the special challenged person who gets the courage to sing or the guy who THINKS he can sing to impress the girls ...maybe its all of the above and more.
And on every night its the KJ who quietly makes it all happen
The show is ......... Is your "show" the same "show" if you are not the KJ there and someone else does it?
The correct answer is NO --The KJ is just one part of the mix , along with the sound system, music library and the other variables... MESS WITH ANY ONE OF THEM and you CHANGE YOUR SHOW.....maybe for the better? could be for the worse

Different hosts for different folks. Every host has their favs and they knock other hosts. A good example is a husband wife team that alternate. Over a period they each have their own crowd. However with experience and time if one cant do their show the other one can change and satisfy the crowd. This is called reading the crowd and keeping the flow going. However every host has their own personality.
a good host can walk into about any show on this forum and provide what the crowd wants or is used to. This comes from years of experience as hosting parties or for example MC of other events and working with crowds. A dynamic host does not force a personal rigid format upon a crowd they listen and read crowds to keep a flow or high energy level going. There are many ways and styles to host karaoke shows. Anybody can do it with the right attitude and experience well almost anybody.

I'd be nothing without the great people that come to my shows. It's all about them which in turn just happens to make me look good.
Johny Carson put it best. I can't remember his exact words, but it was something like this: As a host you are there to facilitate the guests best. Let them shine and people will be entertained. I've seen other TV hosts try to upstage a guest and in my opinion it's in bad taste.
Sure people will come to your show because they like you, your equipment, sound and collection of music. But if you run an egotistical show where you think the show revolves around you and not the customer you're business will suffer for it.
Was it the Johnny Carson show or the same show when he retired? Who was the show?

Apples to oranges. Without your singers, there is NO SHOW - bottom line! You want to headline your own show without singers, go for it - just don't call it karaoke. It's a hand in hand deal. I don't go to karaoke to see the host try to entertain the crowd, I go to sing and be a little entertaining as the singer. IMO the less the host says the better. Get the people up quick, in a fair manner, give a good mix & stand back and let the singer be the show for their 4 minutes - when they are done, call the next singer & repeat.

Besides, THEY even had/have guest hosts ALL THE TIME! Leno got started as a host on the Tonight Show by guest hosting for Johnny. Oh well, the people that were expecting Johnny that night, got Leno instead - still a good show, just different.
