The VocoPro 5800's have always worked fine for me. Yes, mics are important (as are speakers), but to my mind, the weakest link is the mixer. A great mic can sound pretty mundane if the mixer is junk or the mix is bad.

As far as how many songs you need to start karaoke successfully, I can only relate what was told to me by a KJ whose worked here since the 80's (in LA area): "The absolute minimum would be 20,000 - 40,000 karaoke tracks to start."

Wow Kai2. Seriously? First of all, find a show that is using Shure SM58 microphones. Listen to the vocals. If you can't tell a major difference, seriously have your hearing checked. Voco Pros are just a bad investment. They should cheap because they are cheap. Anyone that states they use them and they sound great is really missing out IMO.

20,000 songs? I have been running my show since May and I started with just under 3000 songs. At that time I had just gotten all my equipment the way I wanted it and had all my backup equipment so I began to spend the money on songs. Iless than 9000 now but I can tell you that your LA KJ gave you a bad number. No one in my opinion will ever need 20,000 songs to run a show. Nothing wrong with having that or more but I can personally speak from my experience that it just isn't necessary. Start with a set of foundations as mentioned and build from there. Take requests from the customers seriously, write them down, have them (the karaoke songs) the next week and they (the customer who requested) will love you!

Would be a good thing. You will use it sooner or later. Friday night our singers dwindled late in the night (karaoke usually on Thursdays but changed this week because of a conflict) and I switched to a mix of dance music and was able to keep the floor hopping the rest of the night. Funny, one person had to hear Keith Sweat Twisted and I was worried it would clear the floor so I made her find 8 people to request it. Then I had to sing it as I didn't have the standard.

Depends on the kind of show you want to run. You will need these for weddings and private parties.

Several reasons to have dance/filler music on hand:

1. Something goes wrong with your CDG player or computer...no dead air.
2. Something delays your getting a singer going ... no dead air.
3. No singers ... no dead air.
4. Before your show - get people in the mood with music.
5. Create the mood - take a break in the middle of the show, give everyone who has been sitting on their butts all night long a chance to get up and have a 7th inning stretch. (venue dependent...apparently some hosts risk death by hanging for playing anything but karaoke music).

LOL wer were you at when I had the 6 month battle with Bigdog about fill music?

6: Play a request dance for somebody there celebrating their birthday or anniversary.
7: Play new ones so people will request them for karaoke and sing them.
*: I and others like to watch the gals line dancing.
9: The right song will pick up the energy and get the juices flowing again.

!0: We havea actually done cake walks for charity (All the younguns go to Google).

I was only using Sunfly as an example. Like all manufacturers they have good and bad songs. I can think of worse.....Sweet Georgia Brown anyone??

The absolute minimum number of songs you need for Karaoke is about 60
That's all you can play in a 4 hour show. YOU JUST NEED THE RIGHT 60

Thanks again! - Oh, I am called malibu because when my buddy and I started he had a 64 chevy malibu and we only had a little bit of equipment that could fit in the car so we settled on the name Malibu Music.. Just in case anyone was wondering :D

That's pretty good. I started hauling my gear in the back of a 84 Charger which was a small sports car hatchback. I guess I'm lucky I didn't have to call myself "tinny crappy small car". But I wish I had a restored one to take to car shows.

In case no one else mentioned it, if you try to run karaoke with straight DJ equipment- no matter how good it is- you will be badly under-equipped. Keep in mind that VOCALS are king in karaoke. Also, instead of setting up sound for professionally made tracks with pro music to match pro vocalists, you will be mixing "sound alike" music recorded by studio musicians for mfrs. of varying quality and singers of varying ability.

Not only must you have the equipment to do this, but the "mix on the fly" skills as well....

Just throwing that in there....

Just from the SGB and SF that I have heard, played and purchased, I will take SGB but then again, overall, SF is probably better. I agree with the Pink FLoyd on SGB, I think it is awesome.
