I started a new venue a month ago. We have steadily increased patronage until lastnight (from average 10 - 60+ nightly). Lastnight we had a steady stream of people, approx 40 over the night, but no one stayed and the drink receipts were extremely low.

I'm wondering if the 100+ heat the last week has kept people from coming out?

Tips were slightly lower than usual, but not extremely low...

So, heat, economy? I'm wondering...? Any ideas?

The bar owner I work for is extremely skitish, so I'm gathering info to ease her mind as much as my own.

It just happens during the summer, a big "hit-n-miss" thing. Tell the owner one week doesn't mean anything at all. It happens and is just the way bars go. Can't have a terrific night all the time. Like they say, "gotta take the good with the bad". Good luck in your new show, I have a new one that I start next thursday night. Hope it kicks off with a bang too.

Sounds like you are doing things right, getting the seats filled up. Thats why we do what we do.

While the heat may have had something to do with it, don't forget that it's the last weekend of the summer season. It's also a holiday weekend and people may be bailing early for that last gasp trip before most of the summer attractions start shutting down. Things slow down a bit for a couple of weeks and then build back to normal.

It actually hasn't been that bad this year, last year it seemed like the economy tanked about the same time (packed one day and the next you could hear the crickets :fright: ) and it took forever to get the crowd back. Things may be inconsistent for the next few weeks, busy one week slow the next, but things will settle down and you should get back on track before too long.

Been there done that, hang in it'll get better... :beermates:

Summer heat? Where the heck are you? Here in Iowa, I don't have to look anything up to know that this has been the coolest summer in my 50 years!

Boy, here in the PNW we have had the most fantastic weather this summer. I have been running an outdoor show on a large restaurant patio. We got rained out ONE Thursday this summer. I've had to end the outdoor show now because it gets dark before 8 p.m., and temps are starting to drop too low for people to sit comfortably. Seldom do we get this kind of consistently dry weather up here. It's been fabulous. We even had a hot spell here -- 90-plus degrees several times for a few days at a time.

We usually see an end-of-summer-Labor Day slowdown because so many people take late vacation trips.
But this year, with the economy so bad, people may stay closer to home.

(I had a big show Friday night, and expect a big show tonight. Also, we are having a free Labor Day Sunday cookout followed by karaoke.)

DOH! I've been in heaven this year. The grass even quit growing because it was so hot...And singing outside is the most fantastic experience. Going to be difficult to get the singers accustomed to singing indoors again.

You have just experienced the every year occurence called the "back to school" slump.

It just happened to be combined with the end of the month "everybody's broke" week. Which will be followed by the last summer holiday of the year week. Watch for the Christmas shopping slump. The January-February gotta pay the bills from Christmas slump.

The year is full of slumps caused by many things. Work with it. But don't take my word for it because these things only happen to me.

You are correct. There doesn't need to be a real reason for a small crowd from time to time. It usually makes no sense at all.

Hot weather usually brings me a smaller crowd, but once people get used to it they come back in. I had a slow month the beginning of summer. But I think people going on vacation, working in their yards and doing cook outs, picnics, graduation parties is all factors too.

At my venue they just raised prices. Taxes went up. I thought it would hurt me, but things are still good. Mainly because I think every venue is raising prices too.

You think the taxes are a problem now, wait until this heath care and the rest of this mess gets done. The times they are a changing and not for the better.

Did you see people are bailing out of Florida. The minimum property taxes are $3000 and going way up. The hurricane insurance is $5000 and going up about 10% every year. That's not counting any increase of income tax in one form or another yet.

If it speads all over the country we could be hurting. Great ugliness is coming.

Run for cover!!!!! The SKY is falling!!!! It doesn't make sense to worry about things you can't control. Everything runs in cycles, tomorrow may be a better day than today, but then again, it may not.

Goes to show you never know what is gonna happen. Here it is, the big Labor Day weekend, and the common thinking would be that at karaoke shows, it should be dead. That was the case Friday night and my show, but NOT the case last night at my one Saturday show. Last night was quite frusterating to say the least, but definitely NOT slow. But my friday show, even though it was dead was actually quite entertaining. You just never know what is going to happen at all. But, like its been said before, now that school is over and the big summer months are gone, things should pick back up very soon.

Just never sweat a slow week here and there.

In the YUK our hot summer was on a Friday afternoon some weeks back.
We have just had a bank holiday if you know what that is.
That week was quiet. The week after still not up to speed.

Yeah, we had about a week of 105 degree days. This next week is supposed to only be in the 90's. What a cold snap.
