I have props. That isn't the issue. After a certain point the karaoke turns into an open stage. If everyone starts bringing instruments.

At one end of the spectrum we had the input of BD who insisted that a karaoke show be 100% nonstop karaoke - no filler music, no dance music. And BFFL would concur with that format.

We've had the advice of Lonman who suggests that if a karaoke show includes anything other than karaoke the show should be advertised as such

DJ Dangerous lauds shows where the KJ has comedic or other entertainment skills
beyond singing.

Karyoker says his show follows the wishes of the crowd in attendance and that he is expert in reading what the crowd wants and will play dance music if that's what is "working".

Considering the last two viewpoint, informing that crowd ahead of time what a karaoke show may contain would be a challenging task since the kJ would likely be unable to tell you what to expect during the course of any particular show before the show got underway.

BigJer believes it's best to develop a brand for your show and Karaoke Koyote is, it seems, in full agreement.

Ripman apparently believes he is there to add entertaining touches and does that with graphics, lighting and smoke machine!

Personally, I have never seen a karaoke show where the host has displayed any personal entertaining skills other than singing and MCing and I've been to shows all over the country! Most shows I frequent have "bumper" music between singers primarily because the rotation isn't all that big anywhere I go.

But as Karyoker keeps pointing out, what works in one part of the country may not work somewhere else. I say that what works in one venue may not work somewhere else or what works for one show might not work for the next!

I was in New York a few years ago working on some dance clubs (Some clubs in NEw York hold 3000 or more people) and the style of music being played was great, but for New Yorkers. I have seen many dance clubs try east coast styled music bu it just doesn't work here. It may someday just not today. I could have said the same thing about Europe and New York ten years ago. Things change.

For bumper/dance music Ive found top-40 hip-hop, old-school hip-hop and ALWAYS MICHAEL JACKSON, an occaisional old soul song(Marvin Gaye) and once in awhile an 80's song. To warm the crowd up early---EARTH WIND AND FIRE--HANDS DOWN.
Disco music can be VERY EFFECTIVE depending on your crowd.

That mix is usually a winner for most crowds. Dont bother with house, acid, techno, reggae or the more esoteric club-type musics.

They want fun-time party music. Thats what they come for. Interspersed between their own songs they are singing.

A seventh inning stretch dance groove of no more than 3 at the most songs is perfectly acceptable once or twice an evening to add to the fun and get them up out of thier seats and movign around. Usually as part of somone singing a song(keep the the groove happenin')

The KJ/DJ should be no more than the MC("Host") of the show. A modern day Ed Sullivan, a game show host, Pat Sajak with a Karoake machine. NOT THE ENTERTAINMENT. He is there ONLY to get the party started and move the show along and get the crowd warmed up. And keep them having FUN so he doesnt lose the crowd.

THEY COME FOR LOUD MUSIC, ENERGY, FUN, A PARTY. GIVE THEM WHAT THEY CAME FOR OR THEY WILL GET UP AND LEAVE EARLY!!

THEY DONT COME FOR SOME DJ who thinks he's FRANK SINATRA REEINCARNATE or some kind of entertainment DIVA, CENTER OF ATTENTION or a STAND-UP COMIC or the GREATEST DANCER on earth!

Keep the KJ's singing to the absoluete MINIMUM--once to start it at the beginning and MAYBE once around midnight---and make that a DANCE/PARTY song.

Other wise he/she's strictly the announcer, commentator, welcoming committee, and show coordinator.

NOT THE STAR OF THE SHOW AND NOT SOME KIND OF FEATURED ENTERTAINMENT.

Visual enhancements are fine----so long as they add to the singers perfromance and dont distract the crowd. They are there only for adding background flavor.

Toys--plastic guitars etc--are more trouble than they are worth and are not asked for at my shows. I BELIVE they DETRACT from the singer's efforts and they are another thing that has to be kept clean etc(more upkeep) and constantly replaced.
Not neccessary at my shows. No desire in introducing guitar hero(i have to listen to THAT CLATTER enough from my kids at home)---and have had NOT ONE REQUEST FOR IT FROM THE CUSTIES. Again another thing requiring constant cleaning and upkeep and maintenance and trouble.

They do ask for both new dance music and karoake songs and those I do my utmost to acquire for the next time.

We started out wanting to do the type of show that we would attend as singers. Took a while to figure out that where we used to live and where we live now are two very different places when it comes to karaoke.

Where we used to live and go as singers the singers could carry the show. We even had professionals dropping in to sing just for fun. Any interruptions or delays of the rotation would give people fits as they practiced their songs, brought their own discs and wanted singing time. Many non-singers came, just to dance and hear all the good singing.

Where we are now only a few can even carry a tune, let alone a show. We don't have a college or a big population to draw from. We are in a small town and have the same people, singing the same songs night after night, week after week. For some of them just finishing the song is considered doing a good job. We are at the tail end of three nights of karaoke with the bar next door also having it on our night. We have to work hard to make people want to stay (and not let it show that we are working hard). All preconceived notions about karaoke rules have gone out the window. We don't just have inflatable guitars, we have the enitre band plus one inflatable woman and two inflatable sheep. Ponder that one a while.

On the nights we have a crowd, it is karaoke assembly line as usual. But if it's just 10 or 15 locals then we need to bring out our bag of tricks. I can see having preferences about what kind of show one would attend personally. But how can we jump on a host's choices without knowing their circumstances or what style of crowd they have?

Fixed ????

It's not illegal, but it's not karaoke. Amature talent night. OPEN STAGE. How does that attract singers? Harp players, guitar players, trumpet players, no singers. That's a novel approach to KARAOKE.

If the lyrics come up on a screen and a singer/s is/are up there singing to the cdg or digital version of it, it's karaoke.
