Since many gigs are a cash business, not to mention the cash in tips. Does anybody ever worry that you might get robbed on the way out of the bar to ones vehicle if you are alone with a pocketful of money. Sometimes one has no escort after a night of karaoke drunkeness. People see your tip jar & may think one is taking in some serious cash if the place is jumping all night. This could make a KJ vulnerable since the KJ is high profile.

I know for a fact in many states, if you are a legitimate business owner, & have no criminal background, one can obtain a concealed weapons license.

What say you?

I think about the same thing often. Sometimes, I am walking to my car at night, and I have to park in a parking lot that's a little walk. My husband wants to get me a tazor (I'm not sure how to spell it.) I've never had anyone really bother me except once. It's probably not a bad idea though.

Only in some states, and even then, only in some counties.

Easier to have the bouncer escort you out to your car.

Kind of a troll thread, eh?

When we get done loading we are usually backed up to the door and there are 40 people standing there smoking. Security is there watching our gear most of the time. I cant imagine a scenario where a host would be walking out to a parking lot.

Even one that leaves their system in the venue there is still people out smoking. That is one of the positives of the smoking laws.

Bars have the most concern with till money after stocking and everybody gone.

As a retired serviceman and LEO, I get worried about people who have weapons (concealed or not) walking about without any training either on the weapon itself or the laws governing them. If you get jumped from behind, then all you've done is given a criminal a weapon. If a robber already has their weapon out, the chances of you drawing yours and using is low (provided you can even keep your head at the time - the training portion again). Remember the robber is not going to give you time to get to your weapon. They are opportunists who lie in wait. If you're that concerned about having cash on you then ask to be paid by cheque. If that gets stolen, the venue can put a stop payment on it and issue you a new one.

If I really was concerned I would use the secure payment gateway for direct deposit into the business Paypal account. I do use this for out of town large party or wedding payments. I have had cases where they just prepay the whole amount instead of just the retainer.

I have one so I will touch on this a little. You are correct in that most states do offer a CWL. I don't see how a county could overturn that when it's mandated by state, and not counties. Most states also make you take proper courses to get it and ALL states require an FBI background check. I didn't get mine because of DJing, I got it for other reasons... but I have to drive an hour on the interstate ever thurs and sat to my show and you can believe my revolver goes with me. Florida sorta has weird gun laws in itself. It is perfectly legal to carry a pistol in your gloves box fully loaded cocked and ready to go as long as it's in a little clip holster or pouch ... WITHOUT a permit.

I mainly carry mine to my show because I don't want to break down on the interstate at 3 in the morning with $225 in my car.

I don't think I could move myself to get one over DJing... but it's a nice thing to have nowadays regardless.

p.s.
no, I'm am NOT one of those people that carries his everywhere. In fact, I only carry mine at night.

Only problem here in TX is that you can not carry it into certain places and bars/club are among those, so what good would it do if it's locked in your car.
Then again baseball bats are very legal and will scare away most of the people that want what you got even if they got a gun.

I could be wrong but I wouldn't think that the typical KJ would be carrying around any more money than the average Joe. And if the area was so bad that I had to worry about being robbed I don't think I would want to work there in the first place.

Most states that have CWLs don't allow them in places that sell alcohol. Go figure.

Thanks Sonick.

That has been my understanding as well. I don't know what jdmeister's legal background is but I know that at least the state that we mostly have shows in allows a CWL just like most states as you know if you meet the criteria. As far as county ordinances in other states, I would be ignorant.

Part of our marketshare is in some crime ridden areas. I personally was at one karaoke show where we all heard gunshots down the street! It wasn't right up next to the gig but close! Crazy! Also once the gear is torn down & getting loaded into the vehicle most everyone has gone home, including any bouncers.

missbipbip's suggestion of a Tazer sounds pretty good too. I may look into that as well.... I believe you now can obtain the ones that shoot the darts, not just the handheld ones.... Besides if one has a CWL, one should be able to get the dart shooter anyway.... I will have to research further...

I don't know about other states but in Florida you have to have a CWL to carry a taser or stungun. The only self defense "weapon" you don't need a CWL for here is pepper spray.

Look up your state, but in florida you can't carry in hospitals, schools, government buildings, or bars (restaurants with bars like chili's and applebee's are fine as long as your in the restaurant part) and other places that list no firearms such as banks.

I would never carry in one of the clubs that I play. I do however keep it in my car. Florida has very relaxed gun laws.

Again, the same understanding here.... No bars etc.... I wouldn't take it in the gig but would be nice to have it handy in the vehicle... Thanks for the input Sonick....

Most of my life I carried a loaded 44 Mag pistol in a pocket on the front of the seat in my pickup. I used 3 times. Once we were leaving a club after last call. A car full of hoods stopped and demanded money. Then said we have s agun. I calmly pointed the pistol in the air and fired. If you have never heard a 44 Mag at night you have no idea how loud it is. They didnt hang around to see where the next shot was going.

A couple of other times was the same. KaBoom!!! Ok lets see what you have... A warning shot is all it takes.

At 2 traffic stops I held my hands on th fe steering wheel and said Sir I have A loaded Weapon In The Vehicle. After determing where irt was they continued with their business and I continued on mine. With the newer cops or patrolman I probably would get shot out of fear.

Damn I hate guns... but if I felt I needed to have one on me the Ruger SP101 is a real sweetie you could always count on. Very small 5 shot to fit in your pocket, fires 357 and 38s, and is stainless steel.

I had a cop stop me once and the first thing I said was that I have a CWL. He asked if I had a gun and I said yes sir it's in the glove box. He was cool with it and told me to just stand outside the car while he runs my info.

I'm sure you know this, but even with a permit (in florida anyways) if you pull it without the intent to use it on someone you can get arrested for brandishing a firearm. The one thing they told us in class is never pull it unless we plan on using it and never use it unless there is no other way out. You are really protected in florida. If you were here you could have put one in those guys heads that tried holding you up and never even went downtown.

OK Ollie what ever possessed you to fire your gun INTO THE AIR. No thought as to where that round might have laned? You said you served in the military. I hope to God they didn't teach you that. I'm sorry but that's plain idiocy and any cop or range officer would tell you that. Which why there are many people out there with weapons who have no business having one.

Tim I have many hours standing watch or guard duty at missile compounds which included nuclear warheads. One time out in the desert at WSMR had I lost my head I would have shot the duty officer who wasnt suppose to be in the area. When alone you are under orders to shoot to kill when an intruder wont halt or identify themself. In an area where there are other guards in the area a warning shot might be an option to alert them as to trouble and location. I can show you this in a military training manual.

Also in the desert you have wildlife that are setting off alarms and in the area. The use of a weapon is last resort and is only used when indicated is necessary.

It is common practice in rural areas or ranches to fire a warning shot. This usually ends the confrontation/ What would you rather I do? Open fire on a bunch of kids in their car and I wasnt even sure if they were armed? I chose the best option No one was hurt and the incedent was ended. If you are familiar with a lead bullet in that calibre at a certain range it has limited penetrating capabilities even falling out of the sky.

I am actually amazed that you take this stance or offer this opinion.
