Karyoker--your spelling correction gave me the idea to check Craigslist in other locations to see if the ad was on every Craigslist or just in our area. I didn't find it on Portland or San Diego Craigslists. There is a karaoke company in the Lake Tahoe/Carson City area that has been advertising they are investigating pirates. Wonder if that is why the KIAA presence is now being advertised there.

Are they authorised by the USDOJ?

Are they licenced Private Investigators. If not, they could be in trouble depending on the laws of their area.

I am just going on a statement made on a website that referred to spending less on updating the library because the money was going to hire private invetigators to prove that the same music was being used simultaneiously in several areas at once by another company. I am wondering if such a thing could be a civil "unfair competiton" suit rather than a federal investigation? Or it could have just been something put out to mess with the mind of a particular multirigger.
However that is probably a moot point right now as the company I was referring to has ceased talk of investigators and is instead promoting the KIAA and advertising that they now have the ONLY sanctioned hard drive show in the area.
Anyway, I am getting the feeling that in the future I will be able to answer the original question as to if the KIAA program has made a difference in our area. Many thought we were too out of the way to be affected but it is now seeming that it won't be so.

Another day, another ad from the KIAA has appeared on the Reno NV Craigslist. This one says they have volunteers posing as sellers and buyers of illegal hard drives and counterfeit DISCS. Now I hope we all can tell a counterfeit when we see one or we could be in trouble.
http://reno.craigslist.org/for/1368341178.html
I haven't passed out any regulation KIAA info but I am mentioning what is going on down the road when applying at venues. Will report if anyone cares. They haven't in the past but they may now.

If they are using volunteers for "sting" operations, contact your state Department of Justice that deal with Private Investigation licences. These people are taking away jobs of professionals and most likely what they are doing is illegal.
How's that for a turn of events. Going after pirate karaoke using pirate private investigators (most likely unqualified and untrained in investigation and law. What a way to land yourself in jail or a lawsuit).

I THOUGHT the ad said they were working with the FBI or something like that. But I wanted to double check before I wrote that--missed it by a few minutes--the ad was replaced by a message that it was flagged for removal and due to disappear in 2 minutes.
I don't mean to cause trouble by posting this stuff. I just think it is interesting what is going on and to have them become acitve in our area makes it doubly relevant to us. It seems this stuff isn't going to go away soon so thought anyone in the business might want to know what they are up to on a local level.

Lizard, you want the FBI on your bad side? Just go on the net and tell people you are working with them on an undercover sting operation. The FBI just love it when people know when they are running secret operations.

Timberlea--I'm just reporting, not necessarily endorsing.
Putting two and two together I may be coming up with five but it appears that our area is the next one to feel the presence of the KIAA. We now have a company adverstising that they have the ONLY hard drive show sanctioned "by the manufacturers themselves," and KIAA ads are appearing on their website and on our local Craigslist. As a person with a karaoke business in this area it interests me to keep up on what they are doing and I thought others in the business might want to know about it also. Reporting what they are doing should not necessarily be considered as an endorsement on my part.

"UNBELIVABLE" We sent out "POOP" material withour invoices a few weeks ago and this week got phone calls from clients thanking us for the information. They had some karaoke (illegal) companies try and steal some of our shows for... yep, you guessed it, for uder $75.00 a night. The owner took there card and said he would get in touch with "POOP" and give them the poop on our competition.

What's unbelievable is that with the information you provided, the owner of a bar would put his business at risk, by contacting an organization he knows nothing about, with an accusation about a KJ/company he knows nothing about. On what premise did the owner(s) assume the KJ/company was illegal? The price?
1) There are KJs/companies trying to get gigs. Some undercut to get in the door.
2) There are owners out there, and markets, that won't pay more than $75/$100 a show, for whatever reasons.
I still haven't heard back from POOP (on a general membership question), it's been weeks now.

It seemed like a strange reaction to me also as the response I've been getting when I tell owners about this is more along the lines of something Karyoker might say about having yet more regulators. Can't print it.

It seems that most of the comments made here are from people that are isolated from the real facts. I am out here, I am very familiar with the bar business. I talk to bar owners on a daily basis. I know how they think and what their problems are.
I know what our problems are . I know pirates I talk to them on a daily basis. I am not sitting here jacking my jaws or typing out of assumptions.
The majority of those taking advantage of preloaded drives are those with home systems or cheap systems. The only advantage they get is short lived for they still have to produce and compete with established companies.
Present tactics or theories based on conjectures are impotent. WE need to asses all the facts and use proven strategies which dynamically eliminate our disadvantages. For this we need co-operation from the manus and everybody involved.

Is there anybody here that thinks if they got a big preloaded hard drive they would instantly gain any advantage or increase their worth?

Water seeks its own level, so does talent. Seems to me the piracy issue is dropping way below what it used to be. Some caused by lack of competiveness with good KJs, some by way of learning through the media about the illegitimacy and some by way of lawsuits. Irregardless of how, it is declining and will continue to do so. It appears to me that some of these anti piracy organization are getting on the back of the bus.
If you use promo material to sell yourself, include the fact that you are legit on your business card, have a signed form stating the same for the venue to keep, answer any questions the venue may have about piracy and the effect it can have on the venue. When you do this, you have done all that any anti piracy organization can do for you. Save your money and buy some legit music.
