All is sounding good.
A friend who sings has asked if I will do sound for her.
She will work from an agency. Different venues.
There would be no possibility of filling the room with pink noise.
How important is that...

To answer your question first, with the PA+ version you would still have access to the "Fulltime RTA" which would help you make adjustments on the fly. The RTA will help you visually see hot frequencies as well as frequencies that may be lacking.
I guess I'm not sure why there is "no possibility of filling the room with pink noise". I have pinked more rooms than I can keep count of. I go in at a slow time of day, and explain to management and any patrons that may be present what I need to do and that the process usually only takes one or two minutes. In almost five years of using the DRPA I have never been refused, perhaps it's because they understand that just a little bit of inconvenience now helps insure the best possible sound later.

Thanks London.
I would imagine you go to a more professional venue than I have lined up.
I have a full time day job & would probably get to a venue around 8pm.
Some would be ok, most... "Were not having that in here".
In view of this do you think the PA+ is my best way to go.

What are you using now Jerry? I don't know what I'm comparing right now. To me the addition of a DriveRack was a no brainer. If you don't think you will ever be able to pink the room then the DRPA Plus would be the only way to go when compared to the original DRPA for the reason I stated above. Is it a "must have" ?, of course not. It is hard to beat for all it's features it offers in it's price range. It's a very powerful tool to have in your rack.

Ok
Mics - 2 x AKG D5 , 1 x EV N/D767a
Zed 14
Emu 0202
Lexicon MPX200
Eurosys 15PM Peavey monitor.
SRM450's daisy chained to a DBX 223XL which feeds a 1k Kam amp running a single EV SB122.
I do not run the Mackies from the crossover.
I have a DBX 166XL which I havnt started using yet.

Can you play a familiar piece of recorded music? If so, you can do a good job with that. Just use your ears. Practice in your garage or back yard, or just keep doing gigs until it becomes second-nature. Auto-RTAs are neat but people have been doing live sound in venues of all sort since long before they were invented.

It is second nature, I did a lot of sound during the 80's & 90's.
Its this narrow low ceiling room that I am on the verge of feedback all the time.

Looks like you have a pretty decent setup right now. Adding a DRPA+ certainly isn't a necessity at this point. I'm a little confused though, if I am understanding what you are saying right, you state you daisy chained your SRM450's to a DBX 223XL, then you state you do not run the Mackies from the crossover. Maybe I'm just loosing something in the translation but of course the proper way would be to run both your tops and your bottoms through the crossover.

I used a quick try out which sounded good.
I didn't move on.

OK Jerry, you know your system works as is, but it may be time to move on.
I think you will find that running everything thru your crossover will gain you more control. You should be able to get some extra punch out of your bottoms and a little more definition on your uppers resulting in improved clarity to your system. You could actually be losing some frequencies between where your bottoms leave of and your tops take over.

Ok I will try & get a rehearsal room & try it.
Looking forward to try the compressor out as well.
I think I might gain volume there.
I get a lot of singers with soft voices.
I don't know anyone else that uses the AKG D5's.
How are they rated...

Compression won't help your gain-before-feedback; quite the opposite. It will keep you from being surprised by screamers, though; and it's an immensely useful effect.

SING LOUDER.
Is there nothing that will help me ?
I know... Get a bigger venue.

hi folks,
can somebody explain the meaning of fulltime RTA as how it is supposed to be an alternative to suing pink noise? I couldn't find a DRPA+ manual so I couldn't figure it out. From what I could gather in one of the posts, that it still uses the RTA Mic but not to dtect pink nosie?
Would gretly appreciate a further discussion on this to help me decide if it's what I need to add to my gear.
Thanks

"Fulltime" RTA means exactly what it sounds like it means. The RTA is visible and accessible to the user during a performance. Meaning the RTA can read the room and be used to adjust any hot or attenuated frequencies live. The original DRPA's RTA function was only visible and accessible during set up.
You are correct in that it still uses the RTA Mic but instead of reading pink noise it would be reading the program material in the room in real time. During setup it would still use pink noise.

o i see, thanks londonlive. so this means that we'll have to leave the RTA Mic in place during the show? which according to some posts in is placed 10-20 ft away from the 2 speakers?
secondly, I've also seen a reference to a USB interface, does this mean all the wizards and the manual calibration (EQ, Compressors, cross over,.etc) could now be controlled by a PC? Wow! this is good stuff!

Driveback Questions.
Are you using the driveback to replace other pieces or are you using it with the other pieces?
Is the driveback better than using separate units? Why?
Explain the chain hookup.
Mixer, Driveback, amplifier. That's it?
What pieces have you totally eliminated.

I still have an "oh (@$%!)" equalizer in my signal chain. I have speaker tuning in the DSP (DRPA/DCX2496 depending on which rig) and then if I need to tweak for the room or fight feedback, I reach for the separate equalizer.

managed to download the manual, now I understand that the USB is for firmware upgrade only but still sounds like a good investment
