Has anyone ever provided the sound system for a car show? This last Saturday, I had the chance to go to one in another town. While I have been to many, and have wondered what it would take, this one had something sorta interesting. They had some Mackie active speakers that were set up wireless. I found it intriguing to say the least. One of my goals has been to actually provide sound for large car shows and have wondered what it would take to do some. These wireless systems could be the answer to the problems that I have thought of. Question is, are they efficient enough, meaning will the sound suffer noticeably? They had this one set up so the speakers were high enough so when someone walked by, they would not walk through the signal. Another question is how much power would be needed to cover an area about 3 acres or more with good sound that doesn't just blow people away, but is evenly dispersed over the entire area. Lots to think about and I know there will be a wide difference of opinions. But I would love to hear your ideas.

Hey Mrscott,
I used to do them many years ago. I used a low power FM transmitter and some old fm tuners. I would broadcast the signal from my dj booth to 3 or 4 locations where I placed speakers, amp & a tuner up on scaffolding. And for what it was, the sound wasnt bad at all.

What kind of clarity and SPL is expected at these car shows? I do not know.
If it's like an air show with announcers telling you what kind of plane is flying overhead, you can do that stuff with fairly cheap, super-efficient paging horns.
If it's supposed to be musical and cut through the noise of a lively crowd, you are talking about delay towers for every ~200 feet of throw, which is a lot on a 3 acre area of any shape. Just in speakers, amps, and portable structures, you are into six figures in a hurry. Audio providers generally do their own power distribution as well, so then you need to take care of the electrical needs of each system.
How to get the audio to the delay towers should not really be a huge concern. If power gets there, it's probably not very hard to run an audio cable along that same path. In either case, distributing the audio is far from the most challenging problem you have to solve if you want to do events that large.

If you have powered speakers, can't you just run them off of a standard wireless instrument/guitar system??
Instead of the instrument/guitar being the source material, and the wireless receiver plugging into the mixer, the receiver would plug into the powered speakers and the mixer would be the source material.
I don't have any experience with this, but it seems logical enough. Wouldn't that work nicely?

I do not do car shows, but I use wireless speakers.
I use Shure body packs, you can get a wire for the input.

I connect the bodypack to the aux of my mixer and the reciver to the back of the powered speaker. It works fantactic up to about 500 ft
