The call of nature that is. I've seen different KJ's handle it differently. Some go at the start of a singer's song once they're sure the singer is off and running ok, others wait until between songs. I'm guessing some just grin and bear it until the show is over. So what's you're opinion, when is the appropriate time for the KJ to run off to the restroom (bathroom, loo, whatever you want to call it) during the show to take care of business?

For me it depends. If it's a busy night I'll go while a singer is going once I've made sure everything is set for them. Usually when it's a regular who I know I can trust not to do something stupid. If it's slower, I'll play a popular DJ tune and go while that plays.

For those of you thinking, "Why the heck is he asking this", I was at a Karaoke show a few weeks ago where the KJ went to the restroom while a singer was singing. He didn't make it back in time and when the song was done, the singer looked confused over what to do with the mic and there was a good 30-45 seconds of dead air.

This made me laugh for some reason. I've mastered the 3-minute potty trip though lately I haven't gone at all for the entire 4-hour show because it is quite a ways from where I am. I guess this is really a situation where having my husband at my show is great -- he can just step up if he sees I'm not right there as the song is ending and brings up the next singer; I do the same for him.

I have been at shows where the scenario you discussed happened too - uncomfortable for the singer most definitely.

BINGO! Give that man a cigar!

When you gotta go, you gotta go.... nothing in the rulebook says "you must cease all bodily functions while working."

It's karaoke, it ain't the Hollywood Bowl.

I tell singers that they should consider it a compliment that the host trusts them so much that they can go visit the restroom. It's certainly not true with most of the singers.

Same here. Also look at the time stamp of the song, 3 minutes is usually plenty of time.

Same here, when a singer starts a song. That's why I like my hosting program, because, if I don't make it back in time, the filler music automatically fades in. I get back, cue the next singer. "Relieved" to be back, on with the show.

If and when the "pressure" is too great, haha, I usually wait until a song of over 4 minutes is started and playing before I have a visit with "john". Also, it's always when a singer that can behave on the mic without me worrying about some sort of mayhem to arise.

Usually I dont have to go too often. Dont need to on most shows.

Other than that usually I can make it within a song by checking how long it is going to be.

In an absolute emergency I will grab a regular and thell them "when the next singer is up click the green go button with the mouse".

I dont do that at paid gigs, but sometimes I do that on unpaid house parties.

Yes KJ job is more than hitting "Go" on the next song, but sometimes that is all that is needed, especially if the next singer is announced on the screen.

I try to plan them for longer songs but there are times when you gotta go. After the singer is set and it's someone that is not going to screw up the song, then it's time to run...both ways. If i get back in time that's always a plus.

Hey...I can do better!! 2 1/2 minutes baby!!! Oh yeah... I'm usually thinking about the same words you are. I usually wait for the 3 1/2 minute song, just in case, and always after they are adjusted and I can trust them. Often, my mom is with me, so she'll cover me if I'm not back. Otherwise, I cue a DJ song to start playing in case I'm not back. It's hardly ever a problem.

I'm like you Rip. I have a 5 to 6 hour show. You bet nature calls, but it has to be a trusted regular I leave alone. When I'm real busy I have one of the regs hold the bathroom for me or I'd never get back in time. I've learned to go quick.

Haha, this is the first thing I thought about when I started doing karaoke. When I play in the band, we get a break so its never a thought. I know most of the people who sing anyway so that's not really an issue.

My top 3 tunes to pee to:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody
2. Hotel California
3. American Pie

:P

My potty breaks actually serve a dual purpose. The restroom is positioned such as to give me a great read on my acoustical set-up. I can tell if my mix is off even a tick.
And "Turn The Page" is an excellent pisser.

That's funny - I've also planned a bathroom break for a sound check from the bathroom. The bathroom is directly at the otherside of the room. Multitasking KJ

Like when I asked a friend of mine "Dude I've seen you drink like a fish and you still haven't went to the can. How big is your bladder?". To which he replied "It depends"

The followup question should be hand sanatizing after the break. It is the cold and flu season and usually one sink.

This has happened to me, though only a handful of times. I drink a lot of coffee when working and need to go several times a night. The mens' can is the most crowded place in the bar. It can be packed in there.

I usually make a run for it when a four minute plus ballad comes up, but sometimes don't make it back even with that amount of time. It doesn't happen often but you are right it's embarrassing.

Paradise behind the dashboard lights and American Pie are good break songs. Or I find a disc with back to back songs that my "trusted singer" can sing, and that always gets me thru the long line to the can.
