The original was not supposed to be fun but it is a fantastic song musically lyrically and in the most case historically and up here it is loved. I sang it one night a few years back and a woman came up and thanked me. She said her father was a crewman. I doubt there are many songs out there that bring emotion out in people, especially those whose lives are dependent on the water.

Well maybe I'm not doing the right thing here, but the only time I open a show is if I don't have any singers signed up to sing yet. If I do sing, I like to wonder through the bar with a cordless mic doing a crowd pleaser and trying to get the other people to sing along from their seats. If somebody starts feeling real rambunctious and wants to take the mic and finish the song, that's o.k. with me to. I just want to get people excited enough to get up and start singing.

After that, as long as I have at least one singer waiting to sing I don't sing. I let one of the singers have the last song of the night as well.

Maybe this is weird, but I genuinely enjoy seeing other people have a good time -- I don't have to sing to have fun. I consider my best show nights to have been the ones where I've had so many singers that I don't sing all night.

When I want to get my sing on, I go visit someone else's show.

IMO if the singers aren't there from the get go, singing in the crowd on the very first song to try and get some interest is way too early. They need alcohol. So you probably never get someone to finish or even sing along.

I take myself out and put myself in as the rotation warrants. Whatever is good for the overall show atmosphere.

I don't worry about anything except whether or not I get at least a few people to sing along in their seats when the mic isn't in their face. If that happens, they're having fun and I may just deflower another karaoke virgin before the night is over.

If it's any comfort Timberlea, I absolutely love Gordon Lightfoot -- his voice is so warm and rich!

I've done...

"Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald" -- but only one time -- forgot how long it is.

"Canadian Railroad Trilogy" (wife and I had the bar to ourselves at another guy's show -- another Loooonnnnnng one -- but a great song with plenty of history that Americans can identify with as well -- well other than maybe the word "Navvies" lol)

"Carefree Highway"
"Sundown"
"Beautiful" - serenaded wife at our wedding (got so choked up I butchered it, but it passed for a romantic gesture)
"If You Could Read My Mind"

Wife wants me to work on "Song For A Winter's Night" so that's next I guess...

I'd really love to get a hold of the "Seven Island Suite" one of these days as well...

Trivia question for today --

What do Gordon Lightfoot, The Band and John Belushi all have in common? One of the songs above has a link with this as well.... ;-)

I always do the first song, both as an intro and sound check. After that, as long as there are at least 5 or 6 singers, I'm out.

Exceptions: A romantic song request for a couple, ( I'm a sucker for love, and I have sort of a crooner's voice)

A duet request- but ONLY if all other options for another partner are exhausted...

Good topic.

One place we hit has a couple KJing. And they both sing a song. They always start the night, and never end it. I've never heard anyone complain over it. I mean they can sing at least. And they pay attention to it. When the rotation increases though, they will change to doing 1 duet or pull themselves completely at around 12- 15 singers. The husband of the group does shake it up a bit if it gets to mellow. He also knows he has approval to change my songs to change the tone if it gets to slow.

I don't consider my sound check song as the first song. Many times it is a half hour before show time. However,I have had several instances of someone who works early but would like to sing a song before they leave sing even though it isn't show time yet and they sing before me. I just try to make sure feedback isn't an issue and eq is good.
