Okay, so I finally decided on a program (I think), Karma, but it only runs on 32 bit. Should I be concerned that it seems antiquated before I even get started? Isn't everything going to 64 bit?

Thanks!

Most programs are still 32-bit because you need a 64-bit operating system to run 64-bit programs. Most people are still running 32-bit OSs on 64-bit hardware. However most 32-bit programs will run fine on 64-bit OSs because Microsoft is usually careful to stay backward compatible. For that matter, there is probably a fair amount of 8-it and 16-bit software still being run.

Confused? :)

Look at the system requirements for the program that you are considering and go with that. Otherwise it would be wise to ask specific questions of the program vendor itself.

OY OY OY!!! That question is the tip of a very large iceberg.

The simple answer is that if you have Karma working on your computer now, you don't intend to upgrade computers, and this is a KARAOKE ONLY computer, don't worry about it. Just keep it off the net and it should work forever.

Is unlikely that MicroFlacid wil abandon WIN32 support anytime in the near future IMO.

This may be exclusive only to this manufacturer, but when researching KJ hosting programs I found that PCDJ’s doesn’t work on 64-bit systems (yet)

http://pcdj.com/index.php/products/kjpro/

•System Requirements
*OUR SOFTWARE SECURITY REQUIRES MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER 7 OR 8*
- Windows Vista® SP1, Windows XP® SP3, or later (32-bit versions only)
- 1.5Ghz or faster multi-core processor(recommended) or 2Ghz or faster single-core processor
- Minimum 512MB RAM (1GB or more recommended)
- Fast video card (anything listed as DirectX 9 compatible or Vista® premium compatible is more than enough)

I am pretty sure that Windows 7 is in both 64 bit and 32 bit versions, so no worries about upgrades.

For the average user, you will really see no difference in performance with 32bit vs. 64 bit. Personally, I would just stick with 32 bit as you will have compatibility with more software.

Currently karma does not run on 64-bit versions of windows. I have 2 notebooks that I can't use for karaoke at this time. I upgraded earlier this summer and I can fin drivers to put 32 bit XP on my new computers.

I'm hoping with windows 7 I can install the 32 bit verion on my new notebooks and then run karma.

Yes, and XP and Vista come in both 32 and 64 bit versions as well. :)

The hardware vendors supported 64 bit very well in Vista, so I expect the same or better for Windows 7 (you have to have 64-bit device drivers for a 64-bit OS).

The major advantage of running a 64-bit OS is that it can address more than 4 GB of RAM (the limit for 32-bit). There are no speed advantages unless you are RAM bottle-necked somehow by a 4 GB RAM limit. As a side note, of that 4 GB limit, a 32-bit OS can actually only make use of about 3 GB of that, cause 1 GB of address space is reserved for other stuff (think of it as "overhead")...

Sorry if I'm going overboard on the details... :)

Actually, running a 64bit OS has advantages over 32-bit, other than just more memory access. Having a 64bit kernel will run many lower processes and daemons faster, because they can process 64 bits of data at time, rather than 32 bits. It's not much, may be 15% more. Adding more memory will increase that advantage further.

Thanks everyone for the info, but I can't find a 32 bit laptop with all the requirements Karma has. Where do I look for a computer?

All the modern computers will have 64-bit processor, whether desktop or laptop. The program runs under the Operating System, which can be either 64-bit or 32-bit. You need to find either Window XP or Vista that is 32-bit, not 64-bit.

Hav eyou tried the DEALS from DELL ---They seem to be 32 bit --Remember you do NOT need a monster computer to host KARAOKE ONLY.

Any of the current BASIC Laptops should surpass all the min requirements of Karma and meet or excveed the suggested ones

Thanks everyone for your input. I finally got tired of looking for a 32 bit, decided to keep the one I bought for Hoster, and bought Compuhost. Pretty crazy huh? I'm ripping as we speak (I hope). Not sure how to test it without the hosting program. Oh well, I've wasted more time just looking for a stupid 32 bit laptop. Wish me luck.....

You'll be glad you chose Compuhost in the long run! As for bad files causing crashes and lockups, one of the many features CH has that no other one has (that I know of) is the MP3Sentry that scans all files before playing to be sure they are not damaged or corrupt.

Also, I just obtained the latest revision 1.80 (its in the beta stage but available to anyone) and this thing rocks. If you're interested, its available from the support page on their website.

Good luck,
tbreen

The bigger problem you will find is Notebooks no longer have s-video out for us KJ's they have HDMI and there is no way to convert HDMI into anything analog. You can use the VGA out but it doesn't work so well.

Well not cheaply anyway. There are step down HDMI to S-Video converters, but they are pricey.

CD audio is 16 bit. CDG graphics only use 6 bits. You're worried about this why?

LOL. You are joking. Right?

I've got 2-bits in my pocket. Does that mean I can buy a 64-bit computer for $8.00?

Nope, not joking. Pointing out CDG is a thirty year old technology. I meant that CDG uses 6 bits per byte, not six bits total. OOP OOPs.
