I put a note on Craigslist seeking working KJ's currently gigging in bars to interview for an article I'm writing for a Northwest entertainment magazine.

One response I got was from someone who said they represented the Oregon Karaoke Association (ORKA) who wrote:
Quote:
If you do a story on a kj with a "PIRIATED" karaoke music library or works for a company which runs a karaoke company with "PIRATED" Karaoke music, well what can we say... please be true to the hard working karaoke hosts. Please publish the total song count of the music library. The world is watching.

Now the story I'm writing has more to do with opinions of individual KJ's, nothing heavy-handed about the industry in general. (The world is watching?!?) So I asked if they had a list of members I could call, to which I received the reply...
Quote:
I wish at this time we could supply you with members names and contacts but ... the information on individuals in the association is (only) open to any member of the association. It is because ... people working in the karaoke industry with illegal karaoke music have been known to cause physical damage and bodily harm. It is because of this we do what we can to secure member information at this time. I am sure as transitions happen in the market and illegal operators hide or move to less commercial jobs for fear of getting caught, legal operators will be more free with member information.

Really?

Physical damage and bodily harm?

Is that just paranoia, or can any KJs here share an actual story where a KJ whom you suspect is less than legal actually threatened, harmed or injured you?

And how does it build the strength of any organization whose members won't go on the public record for their support?

Hmmm. Just curious, is Ashcroft in charge of this organization? Maybe he should issue an orange alert on pirate KJs... lol

What a Ma-roon.

Well DangerousDanKaraoke;

I've been in this business for 15 years and I've yet to see any KJ threatened by other KJ's for any reason. Although I don't live in the Northwest, (it's the Midwest) I'd definetly be game for an interview of sorts.

Dan and anyone else....Here's what I think would ACTUALLY happen (this is what happened one night to me)

I stopped in at a place in HILLSBORO, Ore, Black Orchid I believe was its name--out by the Hillsboro Airport-----wanted to do a story for NWKG so drove 30 miles out there across town to make a special trip---get there and talk to the bar manager---and he was ALL FOR IT! VERY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE IDEA.

Then I go up to the KJ (of course with the HUGE HD based system) and I get nothing but a NO FREAKIN WAY response from him.!!! He wanted ABSOLUETLY NOTHING TO DO WITH A MAG STORY.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..................wonder what could be the reason, well to my mind it could only be one thing.

So a refusal and no story for them. Let the bar Manager know and went on my way--and let the bar Manager and KJ hash it out. Gave the Bar Manager my card and left a stack of mags-(to let them know I was legit) in case they wanted to try it again.

So in response to "RETALIATION".......................no I think you will find NO RETALIATION---as Illegal operators KNOW WHAT THEY ARE and want to conceal it and hide it as much as possible and want NO ADVERSE (or good) publicity bringing to light what they are doing.

So you neednt worry about "Retaliation".

My thought is, the schmo who runs this site confronted a KJ who he thought was a pirate and got his a$$ kicked. lol

Let me tell you, some jack off comes into my show, while I'm working and pulls a stunt like that, an a$$ kicking is very likely going to be the outcome. But hey, that's just me.

I always worry about business or union organizations with secret membership lists.

Hello All,

I can't imagine any KJ wanting to give up free publicity! For both him and the bar too ? Big BIG mistake. Never pass up a gift horse in the mouth. You can interview me anytime

Lee, the initial response was via my anonymous CL forwarding. Subsequent exchanges (4 in all) were via regular email. The gentleman identified himself as "William" and gave me this link. I'm not questioning the validity of the organization, just his claim that the reason why they won't disclose their members is because of "fear of retaliation".

The legality of anyone's show is only the business of the KJ, the bar owner, and law enforcement. Any ad-hoc, vigilante, self-appointed "karaoke policeman" wants to confront me? I don't owe them diddly squat! And although I haven't been in a fist fight since I was a teenager, that kind of aggressive action would make me reconsider that moratorium. As I'm 6'6" and 300# and pretty good with my hands, I don't think most guys would stand a good chance of getting out unscathed. But that's neither here nor there.

Kurt, I agree! That's why I'm completely incredulous why an organization whose members assert they are 100% legal would not want to go public with that.

I've emailed "William" inviting him to participate in this discussion. Wonder if he'll chime in?

just what makes anybody think they can walk into a mechanics shop and question where they bought their tools? Just what makes anybody think they can walk into any shop in the world and question the integrity of the professional?

If you want your (@$%&#!) kicked walk on to any construction site and ask a worker if he bought or stole his tools. What makes you think that a DJ or KJ is any different. Will you get accosted? Walk into my show and question my host. I will do one of two things I will call the cops or I will knock you on your (@$%&#!) after I ask for an ID.

There is nobody that has the right to investigate my legalities concerning copyrights, trademarks or software infringements other than Feds. Come out in the real world and see what the real world is all about.

I told myself I was done with this crap but I read and actually wonder if people here know what it is to work and put food on the table. I will side with the underdogs that have not resorted to selling drugs or engaged in crimes that actually hurt my people.

They have taken all our money and human rights and nobody in this great nation has much of either anymore. And all you think about is more laws more enforcement and more lawsuits which are instigated by e243

Maybe we can tax the KJ'S that bust their (@$%&#!) 5 times a week and buy cd's for the illegals.

Maybe I am done this time..

I was not going to post this through shame.

Two weeks ago five well built guys walked up to me and gave me a hard drive.
They looked like army guys or bouncers.
The told me to fill it and they would collect it next week.
Obliously the told me it would be in my best interest.

I could not have taken one of them on.

The saturday after The main guy was back with 6 heavies. Different from the first.
I gave them the hard drive filled with stuff and they left.

I believe that had I not fullfilled their request I would not e in a healthy condition right now.
I did not tell anyone about this.
Was I scared... I have never been so scared.

I am not going to ask you what you would have done because untill it happens...

How bad was I ?
I dont feel bad. I do feel very bullied. I am very angry still.

If anything happened like that again I am not sure I would want to continue.

No judgement here, but did you ever consider calling the police? The problem with "giving in" is that it opens up the flood gates for more of that kind of crap, and open up another poor sap to get the same treatment. I am sooo sorry that that happened to you. I'd hate to be in the same position, and I don't know what I'd do in that case.

My friend, I'd hate to see you quit because of that though. Good luck.

The pirates in our area are rather volatile. One, before she became a head pirate and was just a mate, used to sing where we did. She would scream out ballads at the top of her lungs with tears streaming down her face. Then she would leave, her work of informing the crowd that there were half price drinks at HER venue completed. I am told by another KJ that once she got her own show he tried to visit it and she had him escorted out by 4 big men who tried to goad him into a fight. It was pretty funny as he was a pirate also and they used to sing at the same pirate place together. But do WE fear them? We don't but must admit to wondering sometimes if we should.
