Would you publish a list of places you use to work and have been fired from with the number of months you worked there? Like it's something to be proud of? It's a pretty long list too.
This local KJ did that and most jobs were 6 months or less. What does that tell you about him? Can't keep a job for some strange reason. Must be him.

Other than fill ins my shortest gig was 1 1/2 years, longest over 5. I have done numerous parties and weddings. Other than a $1500 initial investment I have put together a decent system with blood sweat tears and money from gigs. Photo shows tower with rack mount installed in it. It is now backup and I use a laptop. Stage video monitor is 21" LCD. Stage audio is JBL Eon10G2 Mains are 2-4 JBL EON G2's . Using a 50 or 100 foot snake we run FOH.
It is not the best I do need a sub at times but I do know how to get the most out of it in any venue.

I find it difficult just mentioning the place we are now. When we first moved here we were afraid to go in until we had exhausted all the other potential karaoke places as being unfriendly. Others had been warned not to go in as "none of the women in there have teeth." It turns out to be a very friendly and welcoming place and we started doing shows there, ourselves, last year. But when we mention to other potential venues that we play there, boy, do we get faces.
We are going to start doing some volunteer shows for the Boys and Girls Club because we really would like to give some young and enthusiastic people a chance to sing. But it may not hurt to have something different on the resume, either, as well as get the experience of dealing with a different kind of crowd.
But if we'd had a string of short running shows? Probably would just leave those off.......

That's a great site! Is that Tank Abbott in some of the pics?
I laid out my setup with my booth in front of my speakers this week, it just didn't work with our set up. Unless I go all the way to the back of the room (about 70 feet) where a sound-mixer station is set up (including a tunnel underneath for snakes) I have to be part of the dance floor. Plus a permanent sitting space would be right next to me and I envision someone trying to talk to me ALL night long. Still uncomfortable leaving the singer on the stage alone. I haven't given up on the idea but for now-----

I wouldn't necessarily list how long I was at places, but listing a list of places I worked wouldn't be totally out of order. Many of the places I worked in the past are no longer in business due to other circumstances. One place, the owner was arrested for tax evasion & the place closed down. Another burned down. Another was sold & closed down for renovations for the new club which wanted to have live music only. Another I was lowballed - turned a $1200 a night till into $200 after I was let go, this came from the bartender directly whom was also a bartender at another club I was working - they went out of business 2 months later. They did try to rehire me, but found they couldn't pay my new price which was raised.
Some of these I was there more than a year, some were less than 6 months, none reflected on me personally so it's not necessarily the fault of the kj.

I agree with Lonman - a KJ being fired from a crappy venue doesn't particularly reflect on the KJ, could be the crappy venue. Best thing that ever happened to me was that I was fired from my first KJ gig after 6 months. The bar had a poor layout, bad food, and horrible customer service from its grumpy owner. He expected my karaoke show to pretty much double his Saturday night crowds, or else he wasn't happy. However, the reason I couldn't get more than about 30 people in his crappy bar was because it was a crappy bar. Can't put the best KJ in the world in a bar with a bad reputation and expect them to turn it around if the bar isn't willing to work on its issues as well.
Anyway, that was my first gig, and I learned the ropes and honed my skills, and after being fired secured a gig at a great bar where I've been packing them in for over 5 years. Being fired from the crappy bar was the best thing that ever happened to me. Oh, and that crappy bar closed 3 months after I left and has been an empty building for about 3 years now.

It all depends if the venues were happy with the service and would give a GOOD recomendation.

Which most likely wouldn't happen either. Most of the places I have worked in the past, the managers were/are since long gone or the places don't exist anymore. So to say you worked in a place that is gone might not look good on a resume for clubs - unless this places was a 'known' club. For private shows it may appear better as it would look to the person hiring that you have a lot of experience.

I've worked a lot of places over the past 5+ years, and it's safe to say I have "fired" more bar owners than have fired me.

Hello All,
I advertise the other places I work in my songbook. I also advertise them on the web. I DO NOT advertise the other places that i've been fired from. What benefit does that serve?
Jason

Hmmmm. I would think after reading that list, a venue manager would think..."Damn, that KJ causes places to go out of business...bad juju" J/K
