Hi & welcome. I'm not sure what you mean bout "it beats putting a band together"... isn't that every singers dream at some point or another to front a band & be the center of attention instead of just being a number? (of course they must be talented enough).
I would love to hear an actual vocal coach sing... you should sub some songs here On the Showcase

Hi Tanesha
I was in a band yrs ago and have no urge to do it again. karaoke is a much better outlet for me. I totally understand where you are coming from.

Welcome Tanesha. It's a fun site.
Andygurl,
I see what you're saying, but no, not in my case. Would it be cool? Heck yeah. But not near a dream at all for me. I'm kinda quiet for all that attention.
I'm guessing Tanesha means the sudden urge of singing without the extra band hassles of planned gigs ect.. In my case just to go out and have fun and be done with it.

Hi Avg Joe,
I can certainly understand where u r coming from too... to be in a band takes a lot of hard work & dedication & there are hassles that go along with it as well but it does pay well, I gotta say. The main thing I don't like bout going out to a karaoke bar is people are not really there to listen to you... they're just waiting for their turn to get Up to sing next.
A few months ago I went to a karaoke bar for the 3rd time in my life & was so turned off with all the drunks acting like idiots & I said to myself, what the heck am I doing here, I don't belong here. I didn't get Up to sing, I was just there to observe & it hasn't changed since the 1st time going to a karaoke bar back in the early 90's.
In no way am I putting a karaoke venue like that down, it's what makes you Happy that's the main thing but it just doesn't do anything for me being ignored while singing & having people talking & screaming over the singer. With a band, you get everybodys attention & they're there for you.
If u r not aware, my husband is a professional singer & has several bands... he uses the user name Steven John here & I've seen how the crowd focuses all their attention On the players.
I only found SS a few short years ago & I hafta say my life has changed dramatically being able to sing & record my own songs & when I throw a song out there On the board, people are gonna either listen or not listen but at least I'll be heard.

Welcome songbird:) Like she said, would be fun for you to join the showcase and put up songs. Lots of people would most likely appreciate your critiques, given that you're a vocal coach. (just... wear your armor, Lol)
Bands vs. Karaoke.... Hmmm, I'd have to vote for being in a band, given a choice of the two. Karaoke is fun, but to me it's more goofing-off, drunken, who gives a care type of fun. A place to try out songs I'd probably never sing anywhere else.
There's no comparison to being on the stage with the band, I love watching the guitar player tuning up, having the stage lights dang near blind me, hearing the bass thumb in my bones, winking at the drummer over your shoulder...

Well Tanesha, in my short time on KS, I haven't seen a newbie post take off like this before. Everything YOU say is open for talk, which adds to the fun here.
Andygurl, I never really thought about it, but for the most part, the validity of your above statement is so close to being true, it's wierd that it never really occured to me that way. I need things to be blunt and straight to the point like that statement. And I know some people you're speaking of, so yeah it exist. But for the better karaoke bars I'll have to disagree. Heck we stick around and play darts afterwards
Now granted, some singers end up being background music. And your drunks will be out and about. And some will leave early if they can't get another song in before nights end. But when you become friends with other regulars you do pay more attention. Like if you know the band, you're gonna pay attention.
But what about the one you didn't know, that makes you turn your head to watch them. The one with just a few lyrics, has earned your attention. For instance, a couple months back this guy walked into where we were at, tattoos, near shaved head, tough guy looking image / dress style. He gets up there and absolutely nails his song, which was a Sinatra type era song, I can't remember who it was. Oh, btw, he sang it like it was supposed to be sung too. Here I'm thinking its gonna be something heavy and everyone is just watching in awe.
Granted there are the prema-donnas, where it's all about me, but people wise, some of the best bars I've ever been in are bars with karaoke.
Btw, I've said this before, and to me it makes no sense except for the fact of it's just because, but I don't care for concerts or live bands. So someone tell me why I love the karaoke bars. I haven't figured it out
Tanesha, sorry if we've gone off on a tangent with your hello post.

Well since you mention playing darts afterwards, that adds a whole new light On going to a karaoke bar !
Seriously tho Joe, there was this 1 time my hubby & I went to a karaoke bar back in the 90's & they were having a singing contest & I insisted my hubby enter this contest even tho he was reluctant cause that's not what he's into.
Anyway to make a long story short, he winds Up making it all the way to the finals... at the last night of the contest, it was between hubby & another guy that sung typically just standards... anyway, hubby did a Zeppelin song that night & this other guy did a Sinatra song... now if ya ask me, doing a Sinatra song is a piece of cake compared to doing a Zep song cause with a standard, ya just need a nice voice, doesn't take much skill as long as you have a good tone. Low & behold, the Sinatra singer won the contest... & the reason for that is cause he had more friends there cheering him On than my hubby did. So that just proved to me the uglyness of karaoke bars & how competitive it really is. It's not based On the talent level, it's who has more friends clapping for ya... what kinda challenge is that?
So between that happening & my experiences with a drunken crowd, it turned me off completely to ever stepping foot into another karaoke bar... It's just a bunch of smokin' mirrors... there is no truth to it, it's just who you know & how many people you bring to cheer you On.
That's why having a venue like SS is perfect for me and occasionally I get to sing back Ups & play percussion instruments in hubby's band & that's when I feel like a rock star... feels like more of the real deal for me
