I do both. My regular bar has high tables so I mostly stand. I will grab a stool and sit from time to time just because all sexy shoes for women have god-awful heels that kill my feet. At some of my gigs, when I have a low table, I sit. It's just more comfortable working that way. If I stand, I have to bend over to type or write or adjust the mixer. Just depends on the gig.

I do both. I have a bar stool at the podium, but I don't do much sitting. Usually I'm dancing (frequently with a pretty lady ), or just bopping my head and moving to the music so the stool doesn't see much use... unless its a slow night. On those nights, my energy level seems down, and I sit more.

I have a dj stool with a back on it. I sit on it maybe 25% of the time. I have high arches and have to give my feet a rest from standing in one place. It's a great stool that I bought for about 80 bucks!

I stand for many reasons and will never sit so long as I am physically able to stand.

I'm not going to going into all of my reasons for doing so, and I have many, just suffice it to say a friend of mine lost a gig for sitting!

I do both depending how the show is going or how my feet and knees and back feel.

I used to always sit, mainly because of the type of table I had, and the type of equipment I was using. About 6 years ago, I revamped my whole setup to enable me to stand. I much prefer the standing arrangement. I do have a tall stool available to sit on occasion, but I can't really do my job properly now if I'm sitting.

If this friend was a good host with a good show and lost his gig because he was sitting, the owner was an idiot! Must be more to the story than that.

Hmm. I guess that I'm just one of those people who accept everything and anything I am told at face value!

You, of course must be right on both counts

I am still amazed at how many people bite "the hand that feeds them"
Starting any business is a tremendous risk and any risk taker must be an idiot. RIGHT?
Starting a restaurant or bar is among the riskiest undertakings -- even greater evidence of the fact that the owner must be an idiot

AS TO NUMBER 2.
My friend had about 10 years experience when he was let go for sitting and nobody ran a better sbow than he. He was not the first and he was not the last KJ working that venue BUT HE WAS THE ONLY ONE TOLD HE WAS FIRED FOR SITTING
AND IMHO I agree with the owner, a KJ shouldn't be sitting. I know many KJ's who do but the most successful ones I know stand! Ironically, that show was the only show I had EVER seen my friend sit at and I found it curious when I saw him sitting!

Disagree! Maybe it shows a more energetic host and maybe that's why PGA golfers aren't allowed to ride on tour and must walk but there are those that have physical limitations.

There are those with physical ailments (such as me). Does it make the sound worse? Does it make the customers sound worse? Does it pizz the customers off that the host is sitting? Not in my short experiences.


Every host/ show I've seen/ been to had a chair. Maybe it wasn't being used the entire time, but it was there. Who should really care? I'd rather have a host that is personable with a good system and a decent libary that sits the whole time then a grubby no personality host with crappy sound and not so decent library that never sits down.

To me, it really doesn't matter. If I didn't have my high arches and neck issues, I would probably still have my dj chair there.

Oh, and don't think for a minute I was inferring the owner was an idiot because he is a risk taker and started a business. I never said that? If I would have, that means I am an idiot as well.
My point was that he was an idiot if he fired a perfectly good host for no other reason other than sitting instead of standing. So again, he was an idiot unless there was more to the story. Perhaps you didn't hear the whole story. Very possible.

Any owner that fires a KJ for sitting is a moran.. (pun intended)

If the owner is paying taxes, Social Security, Workman's Comp, and the work rules say "No Sitting" then maybe.

Otherwise, Eff that guy.. None of his business..

so what do you disagree with?

I ALWAYS stand despite having bad sciatica in one leg and numerous neck problems. I see sitting down on the job (literally) gives the impression as laziness, and a kj or dj's job is to incite entertainment. -kinda hard to do sitting down.

Most of the laptop kjs i see usually have to sit down to see the screen. If i ever went lappy i would still prefer to stand.

I do see bands (acoustic) sitting diwn during sets but that's kinda expected here...

Almost always stand.

Occasionally towards the end of the night I might sit and talk with singers at their table while a song is playing, but only after I have stopped taking requests.

And their is equipment that would allow you to do so



I don't consider "sitting and schmoozing" with the audience at anytime during a show to be the equivalent of "sitting down" during the show.

I gave up wearing heels to gigs years ago. I have all black, white or brown tennis shoes to wear instead. My knees just can't take it standing all night. Sometimes it's worth it to give up a little girlie style.

I stand for 2 reasons.

#1-Perception. Its more professional. Sitting makes you look lazy in my opinion. The only reason I could see someone sitting is if they had a medical condition, then I could understand. As long as I am able, I will always stand.

#2- Its just more practical. I'm constantly doing something that requires me to move around to places other than behind my console. Between singers I wipe each mic off with a lysol wipe, I often check the sound in the rear of the room,ect. I just don't see how a karaoke host could sit, seems like you would waste more energy getting up & down.

Unless there is a physical reason, which is understandable, it is unprofessional (to me anyway)! A few years back, I had knee surgery on Wednesday and did my gig on Thursday...stood the whole time

I NEVER sit. Stand, mingle, dance... BTW, I always work IN FRONT of my rig. Makes me seem more accessible, and maybe a little better position for equipment protection as well. Medical conditions aside, I think staying on your feet adds energy to the show....
