I am newbie member and very happy to be part of this online forum.

I am looking to put together a component karaoke system for my basement and my budget is about $1000. Here is what I am considering....Audio2000s 7403 Amp/Mixer (or IDOL PRO 3988), CAVS 203g CDG Player, and Audio 2000s ASP 5210 Speakers.

I would very much like to know what you think of these components. I am making a good choice, or do you have a better recommendation?

Here's what I would do with a $1000.00 budget for home use:

Yamaha Powered Mixer and BR15 speakers ($899.00). Don't be afraid of the rating, you'll note that there are only 2 reviews. The mixing amp is 300 watts/ch. with compression for the mic channels and effects for vocals. Also compact. I used to have a similar unit, and took it tailgating, to other people's houses, etc. pretty easily. The speakers are well built and sound great. Have the bass response of much more expensive speakers, and adequate highs/mids for home use or even a small bar. I have a BR12 that I use as a monitor speaker that is 7 years old and still going strong after about 500 shows.

CDG Player:

There is nothing wrong with the CAVS player you are looking at. With the PA above, that would be $1100.00. You can also find single disc players on EBay for $100.00 that will be fine for home use.

Audio2000 is a budget brand. I would stay away from them for most equipment. I own a power conditioner from them that has always been good for me, but I would never get speakers, amps, etc. from them. Stick to pro-level brands like Yamaha, Makie, JBL, EV, Peavey, QSC. Can't really go wrong with most of their stuff. Even Behringer and Samson, which are considered the budget brands of pro-level equipment, make some really good stuff that would blow Audio2000 away for less $$$.

If you want something that looks better in a home setting only, then you trekking down the right path, otherwise IMO you are WAY overpaying for what you are actually getting for sound quality. For your budget you can get much better components.
A couple powered speakers (speakers with the amps already built in.

A mixer with built in effects (not just a delay/repeat combo but true digital effects that is actually useful for vocals) & compression on vocal channels. You don't need a mixer with a key controller as most karaoke players & software programs will have a key controller built in to the player itself.

I'm not real big on any of the newer players out today so can't really comment on the quality of them, have heard the player listed is a slow loader, but for home use, shouldn't be a problem.

So for the budget outlined - same player & much better sound equipment. But again, it isn't as eye appealing for a living room as the more expensive/lesser feature/quality packed stuff is.

Thank you both for your replies. I actually had a few follow-up with questions.

1. The Beringer B212A speakers look great. Are there any disadvantages to using amplified speakers as opposed to using a separate amp and speakers?

2. The karaoke store which I had visited was pushing an Amplified Karaoke Mixer by a company called Idol Pro. http://www.idolpro.com/ip3988.html
Any thoughts on this one?

3. If I purchased the Yamaha G82CX Mixer you recommended would I control the sound on the mixer or on the amplified speakers?

4. Lastly, any opinions on any of the VOCOPRO components or speakers?

Not really in this day and age. The worst part is having to run power cords to them.


I'd pass. The specs are not such that you can have confidence on what you are getting. I think I saw one of those recently and I was not impressed in the slightest. It doesn't look like anything anyone here would recommend.

My opinion is not good. I believe they are overpriced and underperforming. I wish I had not bought the one VocoPro item I bought -- money down the drain.

Not really. Like stated the main drawback is having to run power cords to each. Getting a signal to them is as simple as a standard mic cord - usually much cheaper than a set of speaker cable. Powered speakers have both advantages & disadvantages over a standard amp and speaker setup. Advantages are mainly the amp built in are already designed for the drivers & cabinets they are in. If one amp in the speakers go out, you still have the other one to run on. Again use cheaper mic cables over speaker cables.
Disadvantages - as stated, needs separate power for each. About the main drawback really. They aren't upgradeable so if you wanted more power, you can't simply get a new amp.


You have the mics & music plugged into the mixer. This allows you to adjust volume on each, eq, effects, etc. The mixer plugs into the speakers only. They will be turned on & turned up & you do all volume adjustments from the mixer.

Based on the wonderful feedback from the members of the forum, I am pretty much sold on the idea of the powered speakers, and have started to do some research on the brands recommended. However, which speakers are actually best for the reproduction of voice? I am seeing some mixed reviews on the Behringers...should I be looking at Yamaha or Mackie? Again, my goal is to get the whole system (speakers, mixer, CDG player for about $1000). If I need to go over a bit to get better quality...I am prepared.
