I just wonder how much more can be written about this subject that is "new and improved" - seems like those needing an education can find the threads that have already been noted if they need to feel further edified about the subject. In spite of the best efforts of some, it seems the buccaneers are here to stay, they are not afraid of being caught, and they will continue to wreak havoc on the world of the legal eagles.

It would be nice to see the results of any legal action against the perps but until then, doesn't seem like there is much to add.

I think Pirate topics should be kept away from newbies.
We don't want to teach them how to become pirates do we.

I whole heartedly agree with Karen, and Jerry, and think Jerry made a GREAT point in his "The Big Switch" thread.

I disagree. If they are a newbie in every sense of the word, they need to know about the subject.

I don't necessarily think we should hide it from newbies. How many newbie posts have we seen, in their first posts, talk about the hard drive they bought from someone, or something they would say and the first responses would be us informing them that what they are doing is illegal. They usually don't post anymore. Some newbies already know what they are doing is wrong. Occasionally, someone won't really understand the legalities of everything. I know I've learned so much here that I never knew. Once in a while, you can reform them once they understand the affect it has in the business. (Note, I said once in a while) However, those few times are worth exposure to the subject. I must say we have a lot of that subject going around these days, but if we stuff it all in the KJ forum, which we know is lesser used, we shield it from the masses.

The analogy that I will use is, If you want to learn to be a BETTER criminal, get sent to prison, because that's where the PROFESSIONAL criminals are. So, since we are the professional karaoke hosts, and WE are CONSTANTLY talking about piracy, a NEWBIE comes on this forum, and reads post, after post concerning piracy, and gets an EDUCATION on how to circumvent the system by just going out and BUYING a LOADED harddrive from a LINK that was supplied by someone on this forum. So basically, what we're doing is saying, PIRACY is illegal, BUT if you want to start your own business on a shoestring budget, this is how you do it, and this is the link to go to. Wheresa, if we were talking about subjects pertaining to legal karaoke, the NEWBIES would be learning that. IF a question about the illegal side of karaoke came up, we could give it the short answer of don't do it. and leave it at that, instead of the entire education of the poster. If they persisted, we could tell them if they want an education in PIRACY, they are on the WRONG FORUM.

My 2 cents:
If they really want to be illegal, they can easily find any information they want pretty much anywhere on the net. There is far less information telling "how to" on here than there are on many other sites. Our site really doesn't help them and in the grand scheme of things, is effectively useless.
What DOES need to happen is for "us" to stop posting links to the illegal hard drives, regardless of the reason. No need to just hand it to them. At least make them work for it. Now THAT'S a REAL issue.
As for not talking about it for fear of educating them on "how to", we can always just sweep it under the carpet and not talk about it.
Maybe then the problem will go away.
Hell, that's what they did in the past regarding birth control and sex education for our teenagers. We all know how that took care of the problem of teen pregnancy and sex outside of marriage!

1st of all .The only thing left to discuss regarding "pirates" is any changes in law regarding copying, duplicating and or downloading karaoke songs. For God sakes what else is there to discuss ? They ( pirates) are here amongst us, they compete with large selections and great systems. According to the letter of the LAW there are alot more pirates on THIS SITE that want to admit it. I could care less on how many songs another KJ has ..That's Old School Thinking. / Personally I don't even care where they got em. Ever since people started recording ALBUMS onto Cassette tapes to use in their cars ... FORMAT SHIFTING was a questionable offense LOL.

I just want to discuss how I can download mp3+g files legally and have protection if that file or hardware goes bad ( duplictae copies)

I think it is easier to learn how to become a "pirate" than a legal KJ.

Many of the new KJs may not realize nuances of legality such as apparently legal web sites or techniques that are not so.

Of course there are going to be disagreements in the grey area where laws and honest opinions differ on legality.

A 2 year old can figure out how to steal easily from a store, it is the part of being legal and paying that takes education.

I admit that some of the posting got a bit far into the dead horse catagory with both sides unable or unwilling to change opinions. But at the same time we are not required to keep up to date on every topic on the forum.

If you see a topic with 50 posts that lost your interest once it reached 5, it is your fault for clicking it again.

We all have our areas of knowledge, and interest. Choosing to no longer follow some of the topics is not too hard.

Good post Fred. And missbipbip hit the nail on the head. It's exactly what drove my comment.

Newbies need to know that if someone approaches them with a loaded drive or if they see one online somewhere that if they choose to take the shortcut, they are taking a chance that they ought not to.

The thing I like about this forum, is that I have learned everything I need to know to be a successful host, including being a legal successful host. And I don't need 100,000 songs to do it! All newbies shoudl be given that same chance.

The KJ only forum has topics last responded to in 2006 in the first page of topics.

The main forum has topics that were last responded to in the previous 8 days.

Enough said. No-one goes to the KJ forums. Even with many of the threads moved there.

Why hide the truth... I have read articles written by swingman on karaoke establishments and operators, hiding the fact that these 200,000 song operatins are operating illegaly. I see and read the same thing in Seattle hiding the illegal karaoke operators in a nice write up except for the "Fact" the are operating illegaly. Now I comee to KS and yes you got the attention of Sound Choice and what does KS do? Hide them in a private forum. I think KS has the same standard as Karaoke NW and entertainment. What is that standard? Well... If ad revenue, readership and or hits on their web site is maintained by illegal karaoke operators or club owners who support this this devient activity who gives a s##t. These will probably be the same people when it is "in' to be legal say they promoted it the whole time. I'm not tying to upset any of the so called proffesional reporters (you know who you are) but if you are going to write a story tell the whole truth not just half of the truth you lose you integrity as a journalist when you leave out crucial elements of the article. Not to pick on you swingman but if you are going to do a article on Macs place in Silverton tell people the name of the karaoke company is Elite Entertainment and their music library consists of over 200,000 songs and they handle three clubs... It's not what you write about but what you don't write about that leaves the reader to suspect your agenda. Any good journalist will report the facts and verify them multiple times. I am not saying I am a journalist but I am saying hiding the truth by silence is... well you can figure it out. I am just responding to this thread by saying "Hey" KS you have nothing to be ashamed of by keeping a open forum for Piracy issues... you should be more ashamed by wanting to hide the truth fron the public who is so interested in this subjuct
Not to get off the topic but I saw on the news the other night a story about convience store robbers. They got away with $80.00. next door is a bar with a karaoke operater with 375.000 songs on HD now I ask you who is the real thief but who gets the attention. If you have any negitive responses PM me or if you are a "journalist" you will take this thread in a direction which will get it moved to a private forum and once again the truth shall be hidden from the public. "OK" so I'll throw down the freedom of speech card here. I have no hidden agenda except to open a dilalog in a "forum"...

People don't seem to understand that one. The first amendment says that government shall make no law abridging free speech. That's it. It doesn't say "you have to let me in your living room to shout my screed".

That being said, I have never objected to piracy threads. I have objected to promoting an organization. I have objected to raising that topic in threads not related to it.

But starting *new* threads to try and get more impact, instead of contributing to an ongoing one, is spam. You are trying to paper the forum to raise awareness.

I suggest you should have started one piracy thread, and kept it going. No one could have a problem with that, and it would stay in the main forum. When you try to blast it everywhere, people are going to push back. Because you are hijacking the forum for your topic.

Uh, since when was a private message forum owned and operated by private individuals required to honor a constitutional "RIGHT"? I could understand and appreciate your "RIGHT" if this were owned and operated by a governmental entity. But you have no "RIGHTS" here, only "PRIVILEGES" and yes you most certainly do have an agenda here albeit maybe or maybe not hidden. That is painfully obvious.

Only 3 threads were initially moved to the KJ forum and they had 20-75 posts regarding the issue, meaning they were targeted to and heavily commented on topics. Each of these delt with different aspects of the issue. Now with highly posted threads, topics can drift and it is sometimes needed to re-direct the topic with a new thread.

Since the policy changed 2 more threads were moved to the forum after 0-1 responses.

Not exactly a "massive spam" of multiple threads you seem to imply is happening.

This topic is becoming "controversial" I expect it to be booted to the backroom soon.

I take exception!

If it's Red indicating new posts, I at least preview it for anything I might find interseting. I wouldn't be surprised if others here did the same.

I go there, so you are correct. Please allow me to introduce myself; my name is "No-One"
