What law am I breaking? Can you provide a link to a dot gov site for the statute or amendment to any written law?
I havnt seen the word karaoke in any amendments yet.

It's just a collectors item like all other collector's items.
There's a lot of stuff out there that goes for a lot of money that isn't worth
what was paid for it.
Who cares if you have the baseball that broke the home run hits record?
Who cares if you own a pristine 1954 corvette?
Who cares if you own SC8125?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and even more so in the eye of the owner.
But who really cares?
It's a piece of plastic with digital imprints on it.
The day will come when we will no longer value possessions and all the junk we
now collect will be worthless.
Just my rant

LW There are very few physical things I treasure. One is my VFW cap. Another is my medal.
The most important is a belt I have had since 1946. This deserves a new post for the story.

Being ex-military like yourself I'm surprised you have that belt.
I have lost many thing through the years of moving from one
base to another not to mention my father was career military
also so lots of stuff got lost on those moves.
Glad to see you have something you really cherish
just don't tell me it still fits

Here is just one case of many
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=15037223
Note the fine was for distribution of the songs not just downloading. It would have changed little if she legally owned one copy of the song the distribution was the crime.
Seriously if you have not heard about the many similar cases lately, then you dont read much news on this subject.
Not only that, such actions could get this internet site in trouble.

HELLO!!! You people do not seem to get the gist or realize our dilemma. Congress has not passed laws to regulate or protect karaoke hosts. This was for original artists not karaoke. Quit equating karaoke copyrights with artists copyrights. As a host I have no obligations to the original artist or writer. There has been no amendment to the copyright laws for karaoke. DO NOT JUMP ON ME SIR ADDRESS YOUR CONGRESSMEN

The word "karaoke" doesn't have to be in there, it is covered under "audio/visual", the same way that in Highway Traffic Acts, all cars, SUVs, tractor-trailers, etc are referred to as "motor vehicles" and further not by Chev, Ford or whatever. If there is an exemption to a certain type of vehicle, in a part of the act, it is spelled out.

Get Over It was worth the dollar. Probably the best track that is actually useable on that whole disc.

Come on...
I dont have the exact disk, but other Soundchoice disks seem to have the words copyright several times on the disk or package.
It is hard to read but it looks like there is copyright mentioned in the photo of the disk for sale on e-gay (back).
Example:
This material is protected under federal copyright laws....
For karaoke the artist that wrote the song has rights.
Those in theory are negotiated with by the company that made the karaoke Disk, and also the public performance fees are paid to BMI/ASCAP.
There are also the rights of the company that made the disk. They paid the musicians to create the studio version, paid the royalties to the origional artist etc.
By copying and distributing the songs, you are violating Sound Choice's copyright, and indirectly the rights of the artist (who was probably paid out of a fine in this case, as apparently Sound choice did not have rights to make the disk).
Format shifting is another issue, and some people believe that format shifting is legal so long as you keep the original version. But giving, tradeing, or putting in a public setting copies of the track is not legal.
Sound Choice's fine was probably based on how many copies were sold.
You seem to be stuck in the mindset of 15 years ago where 12 year olds were argueing that napster file shareing of music was totally legal.
Your attiude of "I did nothing wrong" is the best way to convince a judge to fine you with the maximum penalty allowed (if you get caught).

Dr Fred you are absolutely right. Manufacturers do hold copyrights for THEIR VERSIONS, just as I explained in another thread, that even though classical composer's creations are in the Public Domain, the arrangements and recordings are the copyright of the performing artist or orchestra.

Wow, I bought the Back Stage set. I think it is pretty darn good. I haven't found a better desperado version anywhere else, and I have heard the 8125 version at another show.

Yup, I heard it again at another show after I chucked it, and right you are!

Actually, I was only talking about the Eagles disc. The other side of the coin is that the Backstage version of Neil Diamond's Holly Holy is the absolute best version that I've ever heard.
As for Desperado, I prefer SuperCore's version, or even better, Top Hits Linda Ronstadt version.

Interesting indeed, however the person providing the files to be downloaded would still be doing so illegally.
I got SC 8125 off of eBay several months ago, still in the wrapper, for $100. We were suprised it went that low as we had seen several used ones go into the $300 range. We considered keeping it wrapped and borrowing the disc from a friend to rip, but we got paranoid and opened it up to make sure we hadn't been swindled. It is a pristine original.
