Hi, I'm tranfering my library to my new PC and I want to start getting my music online. Are there any good sites to download from, and what format do they usally come in? Are they sold single song or with a monthly subscription?

Selectatrack.com sells downloads. Sound Choice are supposed to be selling theirs in download format soon, Chartbuster is also (if not already - I believe they have started) selling in download format. There are others but do not believe most of them are legally offering the tracks they sell.

http://www.karaokeanywhere.net/ (scroll down a bit)

The tracks available for download are all properly licensed / legal, and offer tracks from all the major distributors / producers. Songs are available for download before the CDs are released in most cases.

Interesting you have the Tricerasoft site. So is this yours or is it theirs that was copied or are you partners with them>?

Just downloaded the iPhone app listed on the site.... wow, released today!

The graphics lag just a tiny little bit but it's not bad. Now when someone asks if they can preview a song I can quickly transfer it to the iPhone for them to listen to (and run off with!)

Glad you like it. This is, of course, the first version, and I'll be tweaking the rendering as well as adding the ability to buy from our store right from the phone.

If you have ANY suggestions at all, feel free to be vocal about them :)

We have partnered with them. We chose them because they granted us the right to use the MP3+G trademark in the iPhone app. We also chose them because they do everything legal, and all tracks are appropriately licensed.

The prices are obviously Tricerasoft prices, but once I build out our own version of the store interface, our prices will be very competitive thanks to a deal we've worked out with them. I think their store is quite ugly as is :)

I never realized that Tricerasoft owned the trademark to MP3+G.

I'm just wondering how many times it has been used without the trademark
sign or their permission.

Oh this is starting to sound like another SC issue

Priddis has started selling downloads of their tracks, within the last several months.

www.priddis.com and click on the Downloads link (goes to http://www.prosoundmusiclibrary.com/)

I think it is funny that I learned about this on a Priddis promotional CD for the Talentquest karaoke contest. Talentquest strictly forbids using anything but original CDG discs--no downloads, no compilation CDs, no burned CDs. Funny, but it appears that the winds of change are blowing there, too. I suppose we'll see next year.

The priddis site states they are not CD+G downloads, no graphics/lyrics included.

When something becomes a worldwide standard it's hard to keep a lid on it. Did you know that the .GIF was invented by Compuserve? They certainly didn't get rich off it!

Or a guy by the name of Phil Katz. He created .ZIP files and gave it away as shareware. Now, it's everywhere. Who uses .ARC anymore? (or even knows what it is!)

Wow...my uber-geeky side is showing.

I long for the days of dial-up BBSs and pkunzip on the command line :D

I remember ARC, for sure.

Exploding.....

That's the dichotomy of digital file standards. If you keep it proprietary, it won't propagate to be the de facto standard. If you want it to become a standard, like GIF, JPEG, MP3, MP4, Flash, etc., you have to make it free to use. That's why most of those standards are distributed free with sometimes small fee charged to developers of applications. There has been attempt to collect a larger share by trying to charge users of fees on standards but they quickly back paddled after a public outrage.
