Recently, I've had some experiences that have made me worried about predators at my shows. It is so easy for someone to slip something into a person's drink when they are singing... even if they bring the drink up to sing with them.

They are into the song, and I know that I get busy with people coming up requestion songs or asking to look at what songs I have by a particular artist, etc.

A couple of weeks ago and attractive young lady came in to sing... she wasn't that drunk when she came in, but in short order she could barely sing, she was dancing "sexy" on the dance floor, and soon was passed out on the floor in the ladies room. She left not too long after that, and I was concerned about the guy she left with... but there seemed little I could do about it.

Then there was Brittany, one of my regulars. Cute girl, 4ft 7 skinny little firecracker with a powerhouse voice... usually starts with a whopping rendition of "Here for the Party". Last week she wasn't there, and I heard that she had gotten really sick after leaving the bar the previous week. She was back tonight, and she told me she ended up in the hospital! She said that she had to pull her car over, and basically crawled to her house... and doesn't remember anything after that till waking up to nurses slapping her face. She's so tiny I can see how she could have been overcome by something someone had slipped her.

I know this type of thing is nothing new, but this seems to becoming a real problem in my area... anyone else having similar problems?

Based on things I've seen, and heard I'm pretty sure I know who the culprit was at my Friday gig... and talked to the cops about it when the bar shut down tonight.... We'll see what happens.

It does happen..

One of the nearby local bars had this (_!_) wipe come in selling his CD.

He was a singer and traveled around pitching his CD.

One of the regulars accepted his offer of a drink.

She ended up dizzy (More than usual) and he offered to drive her home..

That didn't fly with the other regulars, and they escorted her home..

(_!_) wipe left quickly.. never to be seen again..

It does happen.

It's great to be a regular because of the fact of looking out for each other.

Great post. Something we could do well to remember to watch and remind our customers.
Several months ago, one of my regulars had an incident much like Brittany.
She was at another venue and someone slipped Rohypnol into her drink. Lucky she was with her friends. She ended up in the hospital as well and apparently nearly died from it.
Advise your customers to watch their drinks!!!!
If you must leave your drink unattended, bring your drink to the bartender and ask them to put it BEHIND the bar where no one can get to it. If they won't do it, I would talk to the manager later and let them know why you wanted your drink put in the back and if they still refuse, perhaps you need to rethink where you're drinking.
Never accept a drink from a stranger unless the bartender or waitress brings it directly to you.
If you have left sight of your drink, even for a second, throw it out!
And hang out in groups with the agreement that your group will not let anyone leave with someone else, NO MATTER WHAT!!!
Someone slipped it to me once. I don't talk about it much but it was on a blind date (I will NEVER do that again) set up by a mutual friend.
So even a friend of a friend can't be trusted.
Remember that.

This can also happen to men. I backstop my buddy at my main club who is the doorman/bouncer there. He will often have to go to the bar or do something that takes him away from his post for a few minutes. Last year a young woman approached his perch at the door and had her back turned to me at my table which is next to the door for a couple of moments.

When he returned he took a sip of his drink (O'Dools) and asked me if I saw anyone near it while he was away and I said yes. We both have many friends in the various law enforcement community in our region and he had one 'test' his drink and later found it contained the date rape drug. I pointed out the woman who I saw that night and she was later caught 'spiking' the drink of another young man at another nearby bar. Why a woman doing this, who knows but she had been after my friend for some time but he wasn't the least bit interested in her and even told her to lay off. It takes all kinds I suppose.

I have a daughter who goes "out on the town" and I worry my butt off for her.

I have given her advise on precautions to take and how to conduct herself, but nothing is foolproof!

If you really think a ongoing threat has developed where you are gigging, ask the management if you can announce to the ladies that they s/b careful and offer some advice. Also state (which is probably a complete lie) that employees of the establishment are keeping a watchful eye over the place and will call the police to deal with anyone who is believed to be spiking drinks!

I would also add in to your announcement, considering your concern about "roofies", that any females who is by herself not leave her drink unattended. Tell them that if they "must" walk away from their drink, place a napkin, or a saucer, or something over their drink and find a female nearby to "watch" it!

At a small place I went to karaoke at, my friend's wife was being hit on by this guy even after he was told to go "probe" himself by her husband. As he was busy running karaoke, he didn't see him spike her beer, but I did. I called him on it and he denied it. I made him drink the beer to prove it. I weigh 400 pounds and nobody disagrees with my requests. A few seconds later, he was falling on the floor and puking his guts out. We tossed him out on the sidewalk and told the local gendarmes to get him.

Good call on making him drink it. That is scary.

It's true, men are at risk too.. so beware..

Last month, I had a terrible experience in the parking lot of Home Depot..

Two blondes lifted my wallet..

One attacked me and started kissing and molesting me, and the other lifted my wallet.

These two appear to be working parking lots all over town..

I've lost 6 wallets this month, and 9 last month..

Men, I repeat, Beware..
