Well, I finally experienced the dreaded laptop crash. I've never been to a show yet where this has happened. There was about 2 hrs left in the show when it puked. I gave them about 45 mins before I called it quits and made it an early night. I don't know if they got back going or not. Shows I hit are split in half, discs or laptops.

From reading threads here, alot of you KJ's say your prepared with a backup of some sort to get up and running quickly. I just wanted to say thanks for those of you that do, because it was a pretty good night for me that ended as a pisser.

I ALWAYS have a back up laptop. It is compatible with my hard drive and is set up.

What I do wonder though is, what happens if my external hard drive keels over. I have it backed up but afraid to import the tracks from the back up into compuhost as both sets would be in compuhost and if I line up the one from the back up hard drive, it won't play. Anybody else? How would I know which one is which? I guess I could use the song # (compuhost song number, not manu).

I carry a backup laptop with a backup hard drive. if either dies i change both. before i got the spare laptop I used the Cavs unit that i started out with as a spare system. my books had the cavs numbers in them. I almost used the cavs once. I had a guy who used them to do shows when i wasnt. he was lazy and didnt carry the cavs. it bit him once, only cause he knows nothing about computers..ooh well not my fault.
I have shows that have booked me vs others after they had problems with computer based shows crashing. people who care about you having a backup are willing to pay more for somebody who is prepared.

compuhost is extremely easy to back up. Just install on your backup harddrive. If you've been keeping your show version up to date, just go into the compuhost program folder, right click, hit "select all", and copy. Go to the back up, right click, select all, delete. Say "yes" to anything that won't delete. right click, paste. Done. It takes longer to type it than to do it.

Here's a neat little trick. make sure the backup drive and your primary drive have the exact same drive name. Keep your backup files in the exact same form as your primary. Done correctly, you can unplug one, and plug the other interchangeably.

The other cool thing is, you won't loose your singer's histories either. I got rid of my laptop (or, er, it got rid of me), and I've been using a tower. It's the type that you can use on its side. I got it refurbed for $179. Sounds great, and is very dependable... I bought two. I can swap out the backup in about 5 minutes if I had to.

I have my discs & players on site so can run on discs if computer dies. I do have a backup at home to bring in the next show.
