Can someone tell me why I am getting a buzzing noise through my speakers only when I use more than one microphone. It is a pretty small area of the bar with low ceilings and I first found the problem using 3 microphones. So I purchased ground isolators to see if that would help and I think that it has made it less noticable. With only microphone everything sounds great. But as soon as the second mic is turned on, I hear the buzzing. I turned off the ceiling fans thinking that was part of the problem but it did not go away.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

It is possible your mic cords are being subject to interference from light dimmers. Can you turn any dimmers completely off (not just all the way down) and see if the buzz goes away?

If you find that the light dimmers, or any other interference source, are the the culprit, getting some balanced mic cables would probably solve your issue.

Key info missing: Wired or Wireless mics?

Does the buzz "float" from mic to mic?

Example:

1 - Switch on Mic 1 <- No buzz
2 - Switch on Mic 2 <- Buzz
3 - Switch OFF Mic 1 - Does the buzz go away?

I will have to check on each mic. I know I can only hear after the second mic is turned on. I do know that the bar has a dimmer switch for the lights. How could it be the dimmer switch if I can't hear it in the one mic only? Which mic cords would you recommend?

Wait...you said cord. Wired then?

When you say you "turn on" the mic, you get a buzz. What exactly are you turning on that brings on the buzz? A switch on the mic itself? Channel on the mixer?

If you switch mics from input to input does the buzz follow?

Yes, wired mic. The mics are plugged into the mixer and no noise. As soon as the microphone is turned on from the switch on the microphone, then there is humming. But it is only after a 2nd mic is turned on from the switch on the microphone. When one mic is turned on and singer is singing into, no numming. But as soon as the second mic is switched on, then humming. Yes, wired microphone with cords.

Thanks for your help. Hope I clarified it now.

Wired mics makes it much easier to figure out.

The next step is to methodically begin swapping things to see of the buzz changes.
  • Step 1 - Swap the mic cables at the mixer, making mic 2, mic 1 and vice=versa. Is the buzz there with only Mic 1 on?
  • Step 2 - If so, swap mics at the end of the cords. Does the buzzing change back?
It's sounding more and more like simply a bad mic and/or cable.

Like said swap out the mics - do they still hum when on different channels - if you have 2 other mic channels available try the test on the other mic channels? Have you tried new mic cords? Sounds like a bad ground somewhere.
Also are they the same mics being used or two different brands? Which make/model mics - could be a problem consistent with the particular mic too!

Thanks for all the advice. I will try swapping everything around and see what happens. Someone mentioned above about a dimmer switch and I really feel like that is part of the problem. I recalling saying that the sound was superb when I first set up and then later it started humming. So I am thinking about it now and I think it could have started when the lights were dimmed. If that is the case, how can I fix that problem. I am using a ground loop isolator and thought that I had balanced cables. Any suggestions other than turning the lights completly off?

Thanks
