I was wondering if any KJs have experience running rock band (the program) for karaoke shows (without all the other controllers for the non vocal parts).

I am interested because there are some songs avalible for this platform that are not found as regular karaoke versions.

I am most interested if the karaoke songs from rock band can be converted to Mp3+G versions without too much effort (such as re-syncing lyrics).

Any suggestions would be helpful as I am not to familiar with the game. Is it easy to run the game on the same video system at the same time as a regular computer program.

beware that some of those games still have the Fail on the song, so you've got to be pitch perfect for those songs or you will stop the song.

I've got places that are Guitar Hero/Rockband nights, and they are rather hard to work with, its just watching a guy play a guitar and most songs stop because they weren't rocking the games audience. but if you do work out a way to set that up for you, there's vast amounts of songs that can be attained on the web.

I am not really interested in running rock band as the game.

That may work with a small number of friends at a home party or a corner of a bar, but I doubt it really works as a main entertainment for a big crowd.

I know that the tracks in theory have all of the information to be just karaoke tracks if you turn the instruments to "On".

If possible it would be nice to not even have the game grade you on pitch, as that is only a small portion of the karaoke experience, and can detract from the experience.

As I said, Im only interested in the unique (or better quality sound wise) songs to run traditional karaoke.

Rock Band 2 has a "No Fail" mode you can turn on specifically for this purpose.

Dr Fred, if you want to use an online service (*self-promotion alert*) with loads more songs than Rock Band etc our site's pretty good and sells equipment separately which you can plug into a computer, stereo etc:

*plug over*

The online karaoke idea has been floated before, and as a professional KJ it would not work for me. I already have 10,000+ different songs and was looking for additional specialty songs that exist in rock band format.

Also as a KJ who has done gigs at a dozen or more locations, most of them without known internet, relying on a service would be a problem.

They tend to have a far more indie bent for many of their songs that would go over well with my crowd. For example they seem to have 14 songs from the pixies of which only 2 are avalible on regular karaoke as far as can find on multiple searches of both databases and commercial sites.

Other bands especially on the punk, indie or grunge are quite well represented.

Overall, they dont have a huge selection but they cover some ground that is not represented well in commercial karaoke.

I doubt that many karoke shows would see much value in some of the unique songs they have but I know many would get sung at my shows.

a lot of the ground they cover are song that really wouldn't make good karaoke song due to the fact that music is oriented to the guitar... go figure. As I said earlier, these forms will become more popular as soon as a "hosting option" is added.

What part of a song should a piano play in a rock band? Hey, I'm 13 and in a rock band, I play keyboard. Now we want to play alot of songs that don't exactly want piano to go near them. Rage Against The Machine and stuff like that. In light rock songs before I played chords which sounded OK, but we're into different songs now.
