I saw that. Such a deal. Seems like everyone is starting to drop prices that are more into the real world and what real people can afford right now.

Best Buy is notorious for bait-n-switch. I recently waited over a half hour in line at BB to find out they were out of the laptop I wanted.(this is after they told me when I arrived they had everything in stock) Then they tried to upsell me on another model. Mojo don't play that game. I ended up going to Office Depot .

the better place for getting a deal like that and it being in stock when the doors opened is Walmart.

Another thing to watch with Best Buy is something I just went through with a new Gateway I just bought for my wife (came with the free Win7 upgrade). There new deal is they offer a bunch of different Setup and Optimization packages from the Geek Squad. They start at around $70 and go up from there. That's fine and dandy you can always decline that service right? Well not so fast. They've begun doing what they call "express service" where the laptops on the shelf have already had this service done so it bumps their price up on the supposedly sub $400 laptop.

When I was looking at the Gateway, all they had on the display were ones that had already been handled by Geek Squad. Well I ain't paying $70 for something I could do myself. So I asked if they had any that hadn't been serviced. Sales guy said he had to check. So he climbs up a ladder to the top of the display a few sections over (somewhere a customer could not reach) looks and determines they didn't. He then searches their inventory to find out they had two more somewhere and after looking finds out they're at Geek Squad to have the same service done. So even though they have none on the shelf to offer in their stock config, they're going to service two more that could have been left untouched for customers that wanted them that way.

Well the moral of the story is if you don't want that service refuse to pay for it. I ended up getting the laptop I wanted at the advertised price even though it had the Geek Squad service done to it. I've seen similar stories on the Best Buy forums and other places, so if you go there, be insistent on getting the advertised price if you don't want that Optimization service.

Even though I hear windows 7 is better than previous versions, I have been burned enough by vista and other windows products to not go out and buy the first draft of their software until it is de-bugged.

So far as I have seen windows vista is for the most part slower in applications that I actually use than XP and, while windows 7 is faster than vista according to benchmarks it is still not as fast as XP for many apps.

Sure I wish to replace vista, but not in the first 3-4 months of the release.

I had the same problems back in the day at CompUSA. I stood in line. Manager came out and gave me a sheet of paper that "guaranteed" that I would get one of the limited amount of advertised specials. Doors open and people rush into the store like crazed zombies. By the time I get to the section of the store where the specially priced laptops were, the salesman tells me that there are no more left. I go to the customer service section, since the sheet of paper that I was given was supposed to "guarantee" my purchase, and proceed to complain. Manager tells me that if I don't leave the store immediately, he will call the police to have me removed. LOL FAST FORWARD to CompUSA going out of business. Ah! Karma!

Windows 7 is MUCH better and way more stable than Vista. It seems they always have their backup software beta testing in the wings much longer and get the bugs worked out thoroughly (or as close as possible). I remember when Windows ME came out shortly before XP.
