Are there songs you used to love, but hear them so often now they've lost there impact? Besides the obvous songs like American Pie, Sweet Caroline etc...

There are certain songs that before I became a KJ that used to stir emotion, but now I find I mentally tune them out because I've heard them so much.

Imagine, and Cats in the Cradle come to mind for me.

If the songs are done "'well" I never get tired of hearing any of my favorites.
It's when they are butchered that bothers me. LOL

I've heard the song Imagine so many times I swear it must be a record. Same thing with Turn the page.

It's enough to drive someone crazy. Good thing I've developed a knack for tuning it out. Like a mom with 12 noisy kids I just don't hear it any more. I'm numb to it.

I'd actually like to hear Imagine every once in a while. No one ever sings that one. Same with Cats In The Cradle.
Turn The Page is an over done - but I never liked that one alot to begin with.

On an average month with about 200 songs sung in 4 shows, there are probably only 30 repeats more than one time. I sometimes go a couple shows in a row with no repeats at all (between the two shows).

I cant say I have gotten sick of any song due to karaoke yet. A few people do sing so poorly that the song is not exactly enjoyable though.

Overall being a KJ has widened the number of songs I now like as opposed to removing songs from my "like" list.

There are songs that I hear done poorly so often, some times I will sing them just to hear it done well. For example:

Turn the Page
Wanted Dead or Alive
Build me up Buttercup (a real crowd pleaser)
Picture (yuck I know, but if a girl who can sing asks me, I will  )

otherwise, yes, these songs have been ruined.

Great question.

And while it has been suggested that if a song is "well" done it cannot be "over" done, yes it can! It's similar to when you want your steak done "medium" and it comes out "well" done, it's no longer "well", because it's NOT "medium"!

IMHO the following is a sample of some of the songs that I'd rather never hear again:
Most Broadway show numbers, with some exceptions.
Most Frank Sinatra songs, particularly My Way and New York, New York
Most Elvis songs, particularly Viva Las Vegas and Are You Lonesome Tonight
Most Neil Diamond, but I do enjoy Brother Love
Most Hank Williams, Sr., particularly Your Cheatin Heart

Wow, Picture is the only one that gets overdone here from your list - forgot about that one. Occasionally My Way will get sung. Sweet Caroline I would say is the most overdone Neil song but even that is maybe once a week.
It's always interesting to see what gets done regularly at others shows.

Tell me about it! I have three shows and at each I have a different guy "concentrating" on Neil Diamond songs. Then I have one guy who sings nothing but Elvis! Right now, I don't have anybody doing Sinatra but that is actually quite unusual!

Before He Cheats is a song that I loved when it first came out. Then it hit Karaoke and every woman started singing it. I don't limit how many times a song can be sung in the night, this was the first song I saw done 4 times in a single 4 hour show.

You Never Call Me By My Name is another that get's way over done. I haven't seen it more than twice in a night but every Thursday night it seems I can count on someone singing it.

I'd also put Picture on my list.

I don't have many I cringe at. When I do, it is usually long. I never get upset at an overdone Elvis, or really any 3 minute song. It's going to be over soon.

But when it's Turn the Page, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Wanted Dead or Alive, or You Never Even Call Me By My Name I get sick of it because I dread how it 1) kills the crowd and 2) wastes everyone's time.

I have one singer that never met a 3-minute song he liked. He lined up Rock Star, Wanted Dead or Alive, some Ozzie tune, and then asked for Bohemian Rhapsody. I told him it was too long -- that I wasn't going to sit for him doing only 5-minute and more songs. He gave me no trouble about that -- gave me his shortest song at 4:20 (Mary Jane's Last Dance).

Kills the crowd? Overdone yes, but still gets the crowd singing at our show, especially the background vocal parts.

I can see where Turn The Page gets over done. I do this one well enough where patrons won't leave the bar, though. The Rose is one I hope never to hear again. Babs, I'm coming down soon and I'm in a ballad kind of mood. LOL.

Not here, not anymore. Nor Sweet Caroline, for that matter. Especially when done horribly. Part of it is different crowds -- we are much more country. Do Country Boy Can Survive or Ol' Red, and it gets good.

I used to absolutely *love* Turn the Page. Both the Seger and the Marshall Chapman versions. But now it makes me upchuck.

That is a very good point, and I would say that is true for me as well. I've become something of a country music fan since I started working as a KJ. Taylor Swift, Jamey Johnson, among others have been opened to me... :D

Certain songs tend to become locally famous and overdone. On the other hand, a song like Turn the Page has become universally famous and overplayed. Still, in the ideal world, a KJ would be able to go on vacation and trade spots with another KJ in a different part of the country. That way they'd get to hear a completely different set of overplayed songs. The Devil Went Down to Georgia use to get done a lot, but I don't think it is as common now.

If I have to be asked to do Turn the Page or Imagine it's done by Metallica and Tool. Same for requested Careless Whisper Seether's version.

Next time you don't feel like hearing those songs, I suggest putting them in the filler music. People hear it being played and would be dissuaded to sing it.

I'm like Babs..kinda numb to it all. No particular song gets on my nerves, but when i get more than 3 ballads in an hour it kills the mood and i either put myself back into the rotation with a super upbeat song, or ask a regular to kick it up a few notches with an energy creating song.
