Has this lady any idea what she is costing Mick Jagger? Perhaps there could be a brain implant that monitors whenever a person sings a song so that the proper royalties can be paid.

That's insane. I thought US laws were a little strange sometimes but not being able to sing to yourself because others might hear you, it sounds like the UK wants you to have a license for everything.

No. Not everything.
They got rid of the daylight tax years ago.
You can however still go to parts of Liverpool and see the old factories with thier windows bricked up.

Its not just the UK. Check this out:
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/200906 ... 5299.shtml
These people have lost their minds with greed, trying to find new in innovative to "blackmail" new license revenue out of people.

I can just see it - streets full of uniformed ascappers out trying to ticket people every time they hear a song anywhere. Greedy jackasses.

Bureaucracy at its 'finest' eh.
When I bought my flat TV monitor for my karaoke shows, I had it delivered to my office at work. Shops here have to give your details to TV licencing when you buy a TV. Now big brother sends regular threatening letters to the office demanding that we fill in a form to declare we're not watching TV, or to buy a TV licence, otherwise they'll come round and inspect the place.
They don't make very good toilet paper, but the shredder makes half decent parcel packing out of them. I'll wait till they come round and see that there's no telly here so I can tell someone to his face what a waste of honest people's money he is!

The UK still has people buy a telly license? Let's not give the government any new ideas on stuff to tax. Oh, if ASCAP wants to fine me for singing at work or while I walk around...I say bring it on!

The license is for the BBC only. £142.50 GBP a year.
You have to pay it even if you don't watch it.
Most people watch sky.

Along the same lines...
http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/1 ... index.html
Not only do musicians have the legal power to mess with a bar or restaraunt, they seem to think they have the power to impact the international actions of the most powerful country in the world. Not only that but they think that these rights extend to locations not officially on that nations soil, and therefore not covered by national laws.
Dont mess with the songwriters, they are trying to take on the whole US government in the courts. After that how intimidating is the local KJ going to be to them.
This is not about Gitmo, this is about how powerfull songwriters think their legal rights are.

I don't think I would like something I created to be used for torture or something I didn't believe in. But once the music is out there it is difficult to control every aspect. If a person sold a painting they couldn't control where it was displayed or who looked at it after that. But in this case I think they should have used Ted Nugent.

I saw some things there that would torture me just having to listen to them ONCE! Barney, Eminem, Tupac, etc.
Seriously though, they won't win anything. There is no law that dictates HOW you use something once purchased (save public performance rights etc.).
If I purchase a fork, the manufacturer cannot dictate to me that I cannot use it as a garden implement, for example.
They're off their rocker if they think this will get anywhere, and I'm seriously tired of artists involving themselves in politics and "politically correct" causes. Oftentimes, they have no clue what they're really talking about and go off half cocked with their oftentimes radical opinions. They don't seem to realize that with the influence they have on the general public (right, wrong or otherwise), they can do some real damage to individuals or corporations or even governments, and sometimes, it's just not right.
If they would educate themselves with the WHOLE truth instead of only what they want to see, the world would be a better place.
(Please don't take this as a post defending GITMO. It definitely isn't)
