Not in a Food Service establishment. I do believe many state health depts require an employer to send an obviously sick person home. Particularly someone handling food, drinks, or up close and personal with the custies who's probly hacking, wheezing, sneezing, coughing all over them/mics/equip etc. Restaurant/bar certainly could be held liable I would think.

The solution: PLAN AHEAD FOR THIS CONTIGENCY. Make arrangements with some fellow KJ/DJ's or others you would be comfortable with to cover in such situations. Notify ahead of time the owner that you have this back-up plan in place. Preferably introduce the back-up person to the owner so owner is comfortable with the person and back-up plan. This is simply common courtesy and good planning and business.

I've called in sick 2 or 3 times, before I had a second host available. I'd still be stuck right now if sick on a Friday night (2 shows). I'm training up another host but it's a slow process to get it right. The bar should have their own backup but so should the KJ. Many places I work at doing think that far ahead though.

I would think that most KJ's have at least one person who is a regular at their show who would love the opportunity to be a KJ for a night every now and again. It wouldn't take much training to teach someone how to get through a night of karaoke. I'm sure that the replacement KJ wouldn't put on a show as well as the professional KJ but at least you would have a fall back plan for when you are sick or injured. or have a family function to attend. It's always good to have options.

Its not the running of the show that is the problem Bruce. It's the transport, setting up, and taking down of the equipment that is the issue. The equipment is my livelihood. I don't trust anyone with that but myself, and I suspect most other KJs are with me on this!! :D

Oh BFFL, if this were only the case --- perhaps a mediocre type of show, just a cattle call with singer after singer, no talking, nothing extra, and a board that would automatically set itself, yes, that wouldn't take much. I can't tell you the number of people who have come to my show and gone on to say that they were a host before and would LOVE to cover for me. A few questions into the "interview" and I know it would never work. And fact is, those of us that baby our shows and have a huge number of followers ... they are spoiled rotten!

It was the same when I was in radio. If you can walk and your voice is audible, you work. Of course being in a broadcast studio is a little different than hauling in gear and face-to-face contact with patrons.

I worked sick tonight but had my Clorox wipes in tow for the mics. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if I picked it up from someone else using my mic at last week's show!

With flu getting to full swell, any and all preventative measures protects both you and your singers.

Everyone's crowds still as busy? I wonder if singers are being hit too.

The KJ who is not feeling well enough to run a show for 4 hours or more may still be able to show up at the gig to help the fill in KJ get set up before heading home to avoid getting the customers sick from whatever is ailing him or her. I'm not saying this is the best solution to the problem of being sick and unable to perform. I'm just saying it is an option.

One of my regulars who has a girlfriend in school in the Ukraine said they have closed down all the schools for 3 weeks because of the H1N1 flu. The vaccine is not available there yet and 250,000 are sick with the flu. Almost 100 people have died.

This shocked me. Last yr all we heard about was the swine flu and it turned out to be not as bad. This yr I haven't heard much. I believe the media blew up the story to early now people are complacent. The second strain is more powerful. Get your shots!

Daughter of the bartender where I do my Thur & Fri shows is sick with swine flu (not diagnosed but based on symptoms, I am saying she has it). I have been busy wiping down mics, both grip and head, at my shows, especially the kids' show last night. People appreciate any effort we can make. I believe I would go so far as to request that someone who is coughing not sing at all in the interest of public health. Hasn't happened but I would imagine I might go to that extent.

There are lots of people out at my day job. One got the actual diagnosis and was told to quarantine herself at home. The others have similar symptoms but are riding it out.

At karaoke we had less at Halloween than expected but still a crowd. The bartendress was out sick. Have heard a lot of the school children are also out.

I have a few friends in Utah and there seems to be a pretty big outbreak there :(

I think i'll go to the store and get some more clorox wipes and put them where everyone can get to them like Babs and Karen. Do y'all wipe the mics down everytime someone sings?

Not sharing the kjs personal mic is a smart way to prevent us having to call in sick. I go in feeling well or not. Only missed 1 time and that was for a root canal!

I've been cleaning the mics thoroughly every night after a gig. No one has been sick coming in yet. I will wipe down a mic if I see someone is visibly sick and if the flu virus is obviously going around do it more often. I will do it after every singer if it gets bad in my area. Like Diafel said I think people will understand and appreciate it if I do it.

Stay home! Quit spreading germs!

If you have a backup, or someone that can run the show but needs you to set up, set up if you can. If you are too sick, stay home.

Our owner had the flu this week. He left early but when the power went out he came back in and left again once he saw I had everything back up. Was a trip trying to find the circuit breaker in a basement of a building that is well over 100 years old and I had never been in before. Point being, if I get sick, now he knows as he told me it's the first time he has ever had the flu.

I always (almost) had perfect attendance at work. But people get mad when you come in sick. Just a heads up, they say it's only contagious the first 24 hours. Is that still consdered the case?
