A local KJ company around here back in the 90s just had a small ad that said "Looking for some great fun for your patrons? Consider Karaoke" then he just added the phone #. Simple, direct. They were at that time the biggest company around these parts.

That may have been the case 10-15 years ago when karaoke was a novelty and only a few bars had it. I've been a professional mobile DJ for 30 years and can attest that in the late 70s and 80s demand was huge because everyone and their brother didn't own the records, and later CDs. Now with digital music, laptop software and file sharing, you have to go a little further in your advertising as to WHY they should call YOU, and not the next person.

I'll let you know how things go!

I guess I can see your point about 15 years ago. On a related point, I use a tag line in my DJing of car shows. I just say at the beginning, middle and end of the show..."I am The Mighty Lord Air Gtar, and I bring you the best in Classic Rock, Oldies and other musical delights from the old archives". I've been thinking of creating a flyer or advert for my service to send to car show organizers.

Nice layout on the ad! Its colorful, bright and eye-catching

Now some tweaks:

I'd drop the "Wannabe Pop Stars"----Instead something to the effect "Our Professional Hosts always spotlight and make our customers sound great!!"

Change "HUGE" to "EXCELLENT"---owners equate HUGE to 100K

The Post-it is VERY CLEVER! But change "BETTER" to "NEW"---doenst slam others

Get a different pic professionally shot---the lighting on yours is poor---your eyes have red eye, skin tone is not complementary, facial expression not most appealing---or drop the photo completly----REMEMBER---this is how the first look your new prospective client will get of you---plus its in the public forum of a MAGAZINE AD---in over 13,000 copies throughout WASH, Oregon, Vanc BC and parts of western Idaho.

Would possibly reconsider the neon sign also----the wording looks cluttered being that its a neon sign---or photoshop out the cluttery elements in the background of the image--that would clean up the image considerably.

Do you ACTUALLY USE the silver mic in your shows for the singers to use??? If not do not advertise it.

My personal thing is not to SLAM other with ads. ALWAYS KEEP IT POSITIVE OR NEUTRAL and ABOVE ALL ELSE----PROFESSIONAL.

Dont get a rep for slamming others publicly.

Kurt, I appreciate your feedback. I'm not sure if you or the other forum members know, but my "day" job for over 25 years has been advertising and marketing. I'm a former agency creative director, as well as played key marketing roles at companies like America Online and Microsoft. There are lots of things I don't know in life, advertising is not one of them.

Sometimes it's necessary to say some provocative things to make a clear value statement and get the attention of your target audience. Everyone says they're "great". I'm sure even the "wannabe pop stars" think they're "great" hosts. My philosophy is I never want to upstage the patrons, nor do I have aspirations of being known for my singing. I have a sneaking suspicion that many bar owners not only dislike hosts who think their singing is "all that", but they actually have contempt for them. So by outright making the "wannabe" statement, the owner recognizes I'm not there for ME to have a singing showcase, but their CUSTOMERS.

SwingcatKurt @ Fri Oct 23, 2009 11:42 am wrote:

Kurt, realize that you are looking at this ad through a KJ/singer's eyes. You'd be surprised how many working KJs there are with a couple of SC Foundation sets and an SGB library totaling maybe 3,000-5,000 songs. With that as the baseline, 10,000 songs IS huge.

SwingcatKurt @ Fri Oct 23, 2009 11:42 am wrote:

But why should owners make a change just to get a "new" host if that new host isn't "better"? Getting a better host is the biggest reason bar owners hire someone new! They are dissatisfied with their present one and want someone BETTER. I'm not slamming anyone by saying they are bad. I'm merely saying that I am *better*. (Remember that terms like "better" or "worse" are entirely subjective.)

Kurt, keep in mind on the website you are seeing a much larger hi-res version of what will be printed in the newspaper. I'm not a fashion model, I'm a real person. So I'm not worried about a tiny bit of red eye or skin tone variances. I don't imagine people would be hiring me for my looks - those owners are getting some cute little girly for $100 a night. I'm a big fat 6'6" 300# guy!

The background elements are what makes it LOOK like a real neon sign, instead of some type Photoshopped OVER a real sign. Again, when you see it in the actual newspaper, it will be able half the resolution, and half the size but totally readable.

I do not use that mic in my shows, and wouldn't think that anyone except a host or singer would jump to the conclusiion that it's not just a prop for my logo pic, but something that is actually used in the show. Again, you are looking at this from a different perspective than a bar owner. They are not generally attuned to such details.

I appreciate your opinion. But I'll be honest. I don't give a flying flip what other hosts think of me. If they have a great show, are bringing in customers and making the register ring, why should they care? I *do* want owners to realize that not every karaoke show is the same. There are differences not only in the host's talent, but quality of sound, number of songs in the library, and the host's prowess at advertising and promotion in helping bring people to their bar.

Again, that's my goal. To come up with an ad that is so different and grabs their attention in such a way that they'll give me a call. It might well be I have no interest in their venue. As you know, there are hundreds of karaoke bars in Washington and Oregon and they're not all in big cities like Seattle or Portland. But I want the bar owner to make the first move, otherwise it's like hitting on a girl while she's with her boyfriend.

The newspaper will be out soon and it will become apparent if my phone rings off the hook, or rings at all. More to come!

Maybe you should read your own tagline about "checking your attitude at the door"?

If you're referring to the similarity of our DJ/KJ names, I've been "Dangerous Dan" for nearly 25 years. The name actually comes from a 1949 Guy Lombardo song called "Dangerous Dan McGrew" based on a 1907 poem called "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" by Robert W. Service.

I don't know about "dangerus" or "imatation" but I do know I don't need spell check.

If I was a bar owner and saw this ad..my first thought would be.."You got to be kidding". it would be more impressive to invite them out to you show and let them judge on you on your performance..AS a KJ if I saw this ad it would be like waving a red flag in front of a bull and I would do everything to take away your gigs you have..which by the way Ive have done at times... from other KJ here in Salina....LOL

I don't take an active effort to take anyone's gigs, no matter how bad they are. Period, the end. A dissatisfied owner (that I want to work for anyway) will surely be proactive enough to find their own replacement.

I have taken over two show due to bad KJs, and in both cases the owner came to me. I was aware of the show's problems, but I made no active efforts to take those shows. When they asked me, I accepted. Plain and simple.

I'm sorry, and if I sound harsh, too bad. As a person who has been in sales in marketing for over 20 years, this ad is complete silliness. My advice, if you're going to place an ad, then invite owners to your show, talk about the fun, and your enthusiasm and be done with it.

I don't know what the situation is in your part of the country, but I've never spend a dime on advertising and I work a steady 5 days a week.

But let's face it. That's WORK for them! That's time to find new hosts to call and audition. And it's not that easy. A lot of hosts don't have websites or accessible phone numbers. (I know, because I recently wrote an article about karaoke for a local newspaper and had to put an "open call" for KJs on Craigslist specifically because I couldn't locate any working bar DJs on the net!) That's why I'm reaching out to bar owners in a publication specifically for and about local karaoke. Some owners might be letting the status quo ride with a subpar host to save themselves the trouble of finding another one!

Never apologize for being enthusiastic about your opinion based on your experience. The reason why I don't take the tact of inviting prospective bar clients to my karaoke show is the same reason why in my DJ business I don't invite prospective brides to my wedding gigs (aside that I don't want to use someone's private event as my marketing tool).

Let's say I do a big grand entrance for the bride. Or some interactive dances like the Electric Slide or Cupid Shuffle. Or a dollar dance. Or a centerpiece giveaway. And the prospective bride doesn't want any of those things. She assumes that's what I do for all weddings, and it turns her off. No sale.

Now consider that instead of inviting my prospect to a show, I schedule a personal consultation with them. We discuss what THEY want and how my capabilities and experience can customize their day just as they wish.

That's the result I hope my advertising will bring. To encourage bar owners to sit down with me where we can discuss what THEY want, not show them the type of performance and personality that someone else has asked of me. There are all kinds of bars and nightclubs with all kinds of moods, atmospheres and clienteles. I'm not a "one size fits all" host.

I've been wondering how you got your moniker. Have you been in the karaoke business for over 25 yrs? Or were you Dangerous in some other profession? The guy with glasses next to an old time microphone doesn't show "Dangerous" to me. But then again I'm more of the guy who judges a book by the cover.

Is there any papers that has commented on your show? Put their quotes on the ad.
