I have been taking your guys' suggestions and looking at them pretty carefully. Mot of the units probably would put me over the limit on my estimated budget. But, that's really not the important factor, is it? I believe a good effect from lighting would improve things greatly. LED's are a consideration, as well as some of the others. As far as "foggy" areas, that is NOT a possibility, unless I add that option myself. All venues are supposed to be smoke free where I live.

Keep up the great suggestions, and I will keep you guys posted on what I am thinking and will eventually do. Just to make sure you guys realize that I really DO appreciate all the imput.

Scott

Fog, smoke, haze all help to visualize the light beams which improves the overall appearance of your light show. Be aware however that many establishments will not let you use a fog machine or hazer. I'd check with the clubs you play at regularly before you invest in one to make sure that you'll even be allowed to use it.

One of the major drawbacks of LED fixtures is that they just are not bright compared to halogen lamps. However, I have been looking around at some lights and was dazzled (literally) by a new LED systems that American DJ has brought out using 1 Watt LEDs.

Here's a link to the new products catalogue

If moving effects are out of your budget, you can still get some pretty good effects with static lights and pre-set colour chase sequences. Most of the new LED fixtures can be run stand-alone with no need for a controller.

Using a USB-DMX converter you may also be able to control lights with a PC, using software such as ShowMagic. The ShowMagic SL24 software is available as a free download.

Is there anything out there that compares to the old Martin supermoon.
It is an effect I had and loved.
Cant find one anymore.

I don't know anything about the supermoon, but the Martin Wizard Extreme looks quite impressive!

I got my chauvet LX 10 today. for a light i got for $65 new I can't complain a bit. It works decent with sound has some cool patterns and its pretty bright for a small Led light. I think a pair would be pretty cool. it is not a dmx light, it only works stand alone (i run a switch controller) . and as i understand it they link if you plug a second one into it. Im not really sure if that's just a switched outlet or if they really link. I haven't read that far.

LED wash lights ...I prefer the American DJ Mega Pixel over the Chauvet ColorStrip. Though both are priced nearly the same, the main difference is the MegaPixel has sound activated control without a DMX controller.

American DJ Revo III ....is a very nice light. This light cuts through even well lit rooms. Looks good without fog, excellent pointed at the ceiling, and has a very big coverage area. Also has sound activation without a board.

In my opinion, do NOT waste your $$$ on Chauvet ColorSplash Jr.'s.

Yep we're crazy alright, because I've never used Halogen Par-38 along side LED Par-38's before. An manufacturers of LED par cans haven't specifically stated at trade shows and in their own documents that LED's technology at this point is not capable of the same output as halogen. While we're living in this opposite world, I'm a millionaire too.

The reality is, LED's are not capable of the same light output as incandescent lighting. It takes a lot more surface area covered in LED's to achieve the same intensity. And we're not just making this up, I've experienced it first hand and even the manufacturers have talked about it as the primary challenge in LED technology right now.

To give you an example, the ColorPallet you're bragging about is much larger than a 150W Par 38 yet puts out less light.

the biggest advantage of LED's and that is they require a fraction of the power of a traditional lamp. In some of the small clubs with limited power that we all play that can be a lifesaver.

Just yesterday I had my first request for lights and have been shopping about. This one reason above is a BIG one for me, as I am often having to plug everything I have into a single, probably 15amp circuit. I haven't popped any breakers yet but if I was to add a bunch of power hungry lights it sure wouldn't help!

I also like the fact that the better LED lights can be tuned to any color you want. Dealing with Gels seem like PIA to me.

While LED lights may not be bright enough (yet) for a lot of professional stages and gigs, for an enhancement to a karaoke show, I think they would be preferable over standard lighting because of their lightweight, low power and convenience. After all, it is just karaoke! :)

I don't think you can just lump all LED lighting together and as with everything else you still get what you pay for. To the best of my knowledge the vast majority of LED lighting (especially the lower cost versions) are made up of multiple 1/4 watt LED's which are limited in their ability to produce lumens. Over the last couple of years 1 watt, 3 watt and 5 watt LEDS have been introduced and as the size goes up so does the cost (rather substantially). In my opinion, at this point while LED's are effective in specialty lighting they are still not cost effective when it comes to par cans. The value in lumens per dollar is just not there yet. LED lighting is still in it's infancy, I personally am waiting for a standard to be established.
