Tony,
I agree with most of what you have stated. I differ with this part,
Quote: You can not consider yourself a singer if you can't detect whether you are on or off key.
I've seen too many singers (at our shows) that sing their hearts out and do not know that they are off key. Many have great entertainment value though .
Brian, your are the bomb.

Great changes to the site. Keepin' it simple - yet added more value! You are the man...er webguru man.
DID YOU NOTICE ---- The more honest some folks become, the less likely they are to allow ranking. What's up with THAT? CYA
One specific instance cheesed me off. Here goes: I don't think a young kid is gonna appreciate poorly worded 'constructive' feedback (e.g., 9 good comments + 1 poorly worded 'help' = ) I Can Only Imagine it was meant to help...sure hope so.
and no...I don't mean you Bum...
Others have opt'd out of ranking for honorable (i.e., well meant) reasons - and you have my UTMOST RESPECT. Even if I can't seem to stop myself from clicking 'yes', I respect your choice!

OP,
I am clicking "YES" but the ranking has gotten better in the Last 24 hrs.. I have noticed that on yesterday's song.. with 36+ listening an avg. of 8.8.. I can handle that.
I'm still game even with a sinus cold.. Hey that's why I pulled out a Dylan song
Yes I agree Phill has done a Great Job at this!

Good Questions -
Q1: let people decide whether or not to rank. But can you force them to comment ....
and
Q2: the people Q3: the people Q4: the web guru's praises, and maybe his paycheck too (you deserve more).

I have not felt this compelled to get into a 'hot topic' since "Sprocket" (sorry BHB ) But since I was one of those 9 people, I felt that I could field this one...The answer is quite simple...
We know with which spirit the song was submitted (it was sung with a child- Hello!! :?: ) I sang a song wth a child, were we perfect? No! But the comments we recieved showed that people understood the spirit of the submission- (i.e. 'way to support and build confidence NHOH') We recieved 10's not because we were perfectly on key, but because people were encouraging and supporting, not so hepped on knocking down the ranking and telling us what we did wrong.
One last thought: What about the people that chose to have selective honesty? (i.e. giving negative feedback to one off key submission and giving glowing raves about another off key submission, one right after the other?)
Rank all you want, just please check your intentions before commenting!

I think I need to step into this...
I just read what NeverHeardOfHer just wrote. I really don't know what song this in reference to... But ANY song with a child of course without extreme vocal training, or heavy vocal tuning or pitch correction IS NOT going to be a "Radio Ready" performance.
Personally, I don't mind hearing those subs... and a child isn't going to be able to improve based on those types of critiques or ranks anyway.
Remember everybody NOBODY sings in perfect key or pitch.
If this attitude continues.. I might as well go hear the ranting on STTW, Or PALTALK.
THIS IS FOR FUN... A CHILD SHOULD NOT BE COMPETING WITH ADULTS!!!

So, I should create a script to determine whether the submittor is mature enough to be considered an adult and allow them to be ranked?
Then I'm out of any ranking!
(Peter Pan Syndrome - I'll never grow up!)
I feel that this site is open to any and all. Whether you are 5 or 105. That is one of the reasons that we (admin/mods/myself) monitor the site for inappropriate language and submissions.
I need to install a spell checker for all sections
Now, as far as competing (sp?) - back to an earlier post - should I have an option for people to be entered into a weekly/monthly competition? Only five votes per person for the top song. This would require a new page and some tricky scripting, but I think it can be done.
I like the ideas and I understand about the 'emotion' factor. Yes everyone deserves praise just for having the guts to post a song so everyone can listen.
Since the begining of this month (12 days) the visits to the site have almost doubled where we were last month! Not to mention the increase in submissions! Way to go!
Keep the ideas coming and I appreciate everyones input.
Phill
BTW - It has been brought to my attention that some pages are loading slower, especially the main page. There are several reasons for this.
1) there are more submissions displayed.
2) The scripts have to check the database for each entry to verify correct information is displayed.
To name a few...
PS - Should I post the 4 questions as a new topic? Not everyone is seeing or answering them. Probably because this topic is soooo long.
PPS - Thanks BHB I also offer hosting! <-- gratuitous self promotion!
PM me for special discount web hosting rates for KS members!

Regarding the 'Top 5 (or 10 or 20)' thing.... GO FOR IT!!! This is not a competition for me or mine, but I like the idea and could even see myself entering/subbing one at some point (when I feel I have become a singer).
webguru wrote: I feel that this site is open to any and all. Whether you are 5 or 105. That is one of the reasons that we (admin/mods/myself) monitor the site for inappropriate language and submissions.
...And I am SOOOO happy about that, and that is a big reason why I felt comfortable pointing out to please be more careful with comments to the young folks. As NHOH said 'check your intent'. Should have done it in a separate topic though - sorry. Done.

I may have been mis-read...
The children DO belong here.. I do enjoy thier performances..
but shall we say.. some people need not be so critical of them.
They are not so perfect and as educated as the "Adults" are when it comes to singing and as mature. hey it's hopefully MORE about the fun for them than it would be for us.

I have seen some comments coming from so-called adults on this site that would put a child in shame. (Meaning they act like little whiny babies) Please do not think that your age qualifies you as an adult!!. Adults and kids should be treated differently, and ditto for scoring/ranking/commenting.

To neverheardofher and Old Paint:
Wow , my head is still spinning from the backlash of your entries directed at me. I don't even know what the two of you are talking about. A CHILD .
First let me clarify my position. The sub I was refering to was "Constant Sorrow" by SoggyT. As it appears on his profile, he's a grown man. He mentions on the song's description about Seanman helping him out. Where does it says that there's a child involved on that recording
I got interested in that sub because it had been ranked 10 by 9 members. Now I see that the two of you were included. Since the ranking guidelines based on criteria implemented by the administration had changed, I was very curious about subs already ranked 10. Constant Sorrow was one of them. So I listened thinking that 2 adults were collaborating on it.
I cordially and very respectfully invite you and and everyone intersted to listen to that sub, read my comment and tell me where was I out of line. Also, please tell me if you would have given a 10 rank based on the new guidelines.
IMO some of you don't know me at all. I'm a little sad about it because from day one on this site I have been totally open, honest and sincere. If you have doubts about it , I also invite you to read as many of my 131 comments. They reflect who I am and tell the story about my intentions here.(OP)

I'm with you, as a fun song it's a fun song, but that's where it stops. No mentioning of kids either, and it doesn't sound like a child to me (even though it might be)
I have gone back in time reading your comments and think you qualify as a sincere and honest judge. You had the guts to say what others didn't, couldn't or wouldn't say.
It might not mean much, but you have my respect, and whenever I see one of your comments, I weight it up to what ever I say. Keep it up!
What BHB had to say
Quote: The children DO belong here.. I do enjoy thier performances.. is also true.

Tony,
You call it like you see it, right or wrong.. So Do I. Whatever it may be I value your opinion in my material. This is the "sandlot baseball of music" if we don't like it... we can take our ball and go home. I really don't encourage anyone to do that. But just like the others on the "playground" there will be bullies, fights and .... Ya Know.
EVERYBODY
So with being said... can we get back to playing nicely?

My goodness..came across all this and started reading and was so surprised. I found this sight a few months ago and started listening..It was so much fun listening to all the different people sing all the different music with all their different talents. The songs were great..some singers were/are definetly pros and some are having a good time. I got as much enjoyment out of listening to both of them. I don't know much about singing and nothing about the techie stuff..what I do know is that I was sure enjoying them. I was so excited to see young ones getting out there and getting the confidence to sing. I am 56 and all my life have wished I could do this, but was so scared. By listening and reading I decided to give it a try..people were so supportive and I am doing something I wanted to do my whole life and feeling good about it. I can't help but think this is some of what this sight is all about. No one on this sight is going to receive a singing contract because of a song they submitted..they are receiving the fun of meeting new people all over the world and spreading the joy of music and song. Thank you webgru for what you have done to/for me. This is an awesome sight and I feel bad that the competion has made some people forget what life is all about! OK said my piece.. Just couldn't not response when I felt so strongly..

Phill,
In response to:
Quote: Now, as far as competing (sp?) - back to an earlier post - should I have an option for people to be entered into a weekly/monthly competition? Only five votes per person for the top song
Now we are getting somewhere, My point all along, no ranking (breeds discontent)
Competition YES ... TOP TEN of the WEEK and Month
1. enter 1 song
2. DO NOT show the submitters name
3. 5 votes any member (members name hidden - votes for songs hidden)
4. 10 songs with most votes wins - winners names posted at end of the week
5. winners from each week enterted for monthly contest - everyone votes
Should Top Ten require paid membership?
Just throwing it out there on the table...
Cort
MC Entertainment
P.S. Still like JUST FOR FUN... no ranking \, nice comments
Also CRITIQUE.. non-professional opinions and suggestions NO ranking
