Recent "discussions" on why don't KJ's play customer discs have me asking this.....

#1) Can a laptop cd drive hold up to the task of playing custoner cdgs every show?

#2) Is there an affordable program that will play cdgs from a standard laptop drive?
(not a hosting program I have one of those but a seperate program just to play cdgs)

Will WINAMP with all the pluggins be able to do the trick on the fly at a show ???

I don't know if i'd want to dedicate the internal built into a laptop to playing discs at a show, but the external drives are pretty cheap these days that would be up to the job - especially if you only get them on occasion.
I thought Winamp had a cdg player that would allow cdg files.
Only other programs I know of that play actual discs are from MTU & Powerkaraoke.

I checked out the siglos player from powerkaraoke and its only $49
which would seem to do the trick of playing custome discs from my laptop.
I realy don't get any singers who bring in their discs so for those times when someone actually does I guess I can use the laptop drive. If the landscape of the show changes and more and more singers bring in their own disc I guess I could look at an external drive of sorts.

1. Some cd and most DVD drives have the capability to read CD+G format. Nero's freely downloadable "info tool" can tell you for sure. I'd get a dedicated external for more than the occasional customer disc tho.

2.) Yes. Karafun for one. That's what I use for the rare CDG customer I get.

3) It used to.Good luck finding a way to register the cdg disc plugin now, though. The author and his website seemed to haved dropped from the face of the Earth.

The cdg plugin for Winamp has to have a "true" cdg capable drive to work (such as one of the older Plextor drives) I also found it to not be 100% reliable (the plugin that is)

As mentioned "Karafun" is free, works extremely well with almost any cd drive and is what I use along with an external liteon dvd drive picked up at Wally World for about $50

If you are thinking of using Siglos, download the demo and play with it first. I found that it kept freezing up on me. The problem was my anti-virus software and had to turn it off.

I second that. My internal CD/DVD drive happens to be compatible and able to play CD+G disks. So I use Karafun for the occasional disk from a custi. Works out fine.

Highly recommend that you DO NOT use the PC's internal drive. Definitely not up for nightly work. Go external or player.
