Simple Question : Can 1 singer in the rotation ruin your entire night?
(this question is for SINGERS as well as KJ's )

Could be a horrible sounding singer
Could be a singer who sings a GENRE you don't like
Could be just a little Obnoxious type of singer
Could be something you just don't like

keep in mind --This singer isn't breaking any KJ RULES

I edited and corrected a typo - seems BFFL has nothing to do but troll my discussions and look for spelling and or grammer errors and point them out.

Yep it happens singers will kill the mood of the night. People that are unfamilar with my shows will come in and want to sing oldies or country which totally kills the mood of the bar.

I have yet to ever do anything about it the problem usually fixes itself. By them not being comfortable with the crowd or them being hard core karaoke and not liking that I play music.

If your crowd can be killed by one singer, it could be killed by anything. A good crowd can take anything that minor in stride.

Now a table of singers, that's another thing. My wife and I took my business partner out to a karaoke show that was usually very good singers. We, in fact, trumpeted this to him.

When we got there, it looked a little strange. There was one huge table, and they had all arrived an hour before start time and sang before us. A table of 13, just about all singing -- badly. It was awful beyond belief. Show tunes, one opera, bluegrass, old country, Sinatra -- performed in a uniformly terrible fashion.

Almost none of the regulars was there due to a party. We tried to tell him this was not the regular crowd, but we could see him thinking, "Right."

The only person who demands a "cigarette break" for me... even though I don't smoke... is a girl who does only these metal songs that have, like, 1 1/2 minute musical breaks throughout the song. And she can't sing for spit, she just screams and plays her "air guitar" basically. I groan when she shows up.

But I've yet to let anyone "ruin my night"... either miss metal, or the miss sappy love song lady that shows up often:)

That would be someone who attempts to be humorous at the expense of someone else.
Obnoxious would be someone like yourself who won’t answer a question but try to insult the original poster for their own benefit. But thank you for pointing out my obvious typing error.

One of our venues identified what they considered to be a "problem" for them. They asked that this singer be removed from the rotation. Coincidentally or not, attendance jumped up.

I've learned to wear a thick skin over the years. So even the occasional bad in whatever way singer doesn't ruin my night.

The way I look at it is, without the bad singers, the good singers wouldn't stand out AND as long as they enjoy themselves and have a good time, my job is done. Is it annoying sometimes? Absolutely... but I just let it go right pass me.

I actually find it more annoying if you have a bad singer and other people (that mostly don't even sing) run their mouth about them. I usually go up to those non singers and dare them to be my guest and come up and do a better job. That usually does the trick.

I've found that the "bad singer" as long as they are trying and DON"T THINK THEY ARE GOOD usually gets the crowd UP. BUT..in recent years I did have a singer they was like nails on a chalkboard that actually chased people to the bar across the street. SAD BUT TRUE

And that singer was probably sent to you by the bartender accross the street.

Did I vote wrong?
When I read "Can 1 singer ruin your night" I was thinking more of that singer that annoys the crap out of me, but doesn't break any rules. This person doesn't effect the rest of the crowd just me. I voted yes because I have had annoying people make my night miserable. I never let it show to others, so it doesn't have a negative effect on the crowd. For the most part I have a great crowd, so it is rare, but it does happen.

I'm fortunate to have a lot of good singers. Sure I have the bad ones too, but not that many. I've never had a problem with bad singers. I think it is mainly because the good singers out number the bad by a lot. People will tolerate the random bad singer because most of the night they know they'll hear better. Sometimes a bad singer can be very entertaining.

I didn't want this to be a bash the bad singer thread. Maybe the singer is GREAT ...but knows it and ruins other singers nights by that fact. I've had a "crossdresser" come in for a few weeks use to bring his own discs and sang pretty good. But there wasn't ANYTING "girlie" about him. I think he made some of the other patrons UNCOMFORTABLE. -- He was like a train wreck that you couldn't help watch ....

I think we all know the type. When they start I just remind myself that their screaming is a reflection on THEM, not ME!

I've solved some of my singers who ruin my nights.

The "I nail this song because I sing it every week" singer. I've said "I wonder what songs he/she is going to sing next?" or I've songblocked them. I really want to think I'm helping them work on perfecting another song or two (or three or ten)

The "I know I'm the best when I'm drunk, and I should sing with you or beside you" I make sure the other mic is off or signal the KJ to turn down/off and hand to that guy so he'd be happy and yet look the fool to the crowd.

Well this poses an interesting question. Suppose your show is predominantly country. Now suppose Whitney Houston walks into your show one night and puts in a slip for I Believe the Children Are Our Future. Would that ruin your show? Or suppose it is primarily rock and metal, but Lonestar is doing a show in town and stops into your bar afterwards for a couple PBR's and then (now that they have liquid courage) decides to sing Amazed. Will that ruin the show?

I was playing at a small bar and one of the regulars came up and requested to sing a rap song. The venue was more country and classic rock. When he started singing, I started staging a couple more singers and music. I finally noticed he was making up his own lyrics and looked up to check him out. He had his shirt off jumping around. There were three people left in the bar, him, me, and the barmaid. The entire bar crowd walked to the hall in the back of the bar or out front. He never quit til the song was finished. He really wasn't that bad. I asked him if he wanted to come back at closing time.
