As for a "wrong genre" of music definitely NO. While there are certain types of music that go over well in my bar, mainly indie rock 80s, punk and new wave. We get a wide range of other stuff from country, bluegrass, oldies, crooners, novelty, rap etc.

While I really look forward to someone doing a non standard song well I really dread it when a song I don't like is done very poorly.

But even then it takes several such people to bring down the bars energy.

It seems there is always one at every show. Most people who would even attend a karaoke show have to have a bit of tolerance and humor just by the fact that they are at karaoke. It is part of it. THose that don't find the Miss Woo shows.

We have one guy who likes Megadeath and Godsmack, etc. but we are in a country/oldies type venue. I actually order him songs. But he is real good about not asking to sing them unless it's a slow night or the old ones have gone to bed and the young ones remain, etc. He doesn't ask to be in every rotation.

Well this poses an interesting question. Suppose your show is predominantly country. Now suppose Whitney Houston walks into your show one night and puts in a slip for I Believe the Children Are Our Future. Would that ruin your show? Or suppose it is primarily rock and metal, but Lonestar is doing a show in town and stops into your bar afterwards for a couple PBR's and then (now that they have liquid courage) decides to sing Amazed. Will that ruin the show?

LMAO This type of scenario happened to me last night! Pretty much any kind of music goes over well because it is a huge mix of different types all night. But Heavy Metal is usually disliked. A guy came up and sang "Master of Puppets". People weren't happy about it especially since it was over a 8 minute song. A few people complained to me, but no one left over it.

Sounds like these customers are all prima donna sissies who can't picture life outside of their favorite genre. I don't like country or rap or death metal :vomit: , but if someone comes up and does give it a go, what's the problem? It's karaoke, people. The very nature of karaoke as entertainment is casual. (unless you are going to Madame Woos)You never know what or who will walk into the bar on a given night. If you want the music to be one type only, start a private club with like minded individuals and have at it. Most of the offending songs are about three minutes long...go back to your beer...and if you can't at least clap for the attempt, shut the heck up. The next song is coming up soon. Most of the complainers have been those who will not sing anyway. Even as a DJ, I get this attitude. I just ask them..."In about three minutes, is this even going to be important?" I can however see the problem if those so called problem songs are long groaners 6 to 15 minutes long. I don't do White Bird for that reason unless asked and the KJ is OK with it. The only long song I do that people like is One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer.

I would rather hear a bad singer do an upbeat song than a good singer do a balled-helll song that turns people off!

One chinese guy i have IS SO BAD and tone deaf and out of sync with every song that i've been asked by the managers to politely not let him song anymore since people DO leave sometimes when he sings. I don't have the heart to do it, but do ask him to request uptempo songs and to follow the words as they light up!

If the night is a good fun upbeat one, no ONE singer is gonna ruin that night, but a few ballads in a row and people start to consider leaving, as most of my crowd is 25-35 years old. I have been reducing my books BIG TIME and editing out THOUSANDS of extra long songs, and ballads and showkiller songs. Even Micky's EXCELLENT idea to remove a lot of artists that are very/fairly popular but un-sung (think beach boys or rod stewart at my shows) has been cutting my 317 page books down considerably! I of course will keep everything in my master book but now i can add 6 more books to my rubbermaid container and offer 12 Karaoke Menus Dangerous Dan suggested.

There's always an exception. One time, I had this guy come in who calls himself Bearcat. He seems very effiminate and wanted to sing Still they Ride by Journey. He gets up on stage and sounds awful. He's trying to sound like Steve Perry in a really bad falsetto voice. Afterwards my wife told me she hopes he never comes out again.
He shows up the next week though and my wife and I cringe. He didn't stay long though and later we learned that he has a small fan club. He's kind of the Wing (Asian singer) of karaoke and some people actually like to hear him sing badly. Strange...

I think most people can appreciate song sang well from any GENRE.
I song can not break or make an evening... But take that 1 singer singing in every rotation can make your night less enjoyable. NOT so much if they sing well. UNLESS they sing GREAT but are real A-holes . Happens
