I was just wondering if anyone has or has thought about doing some trivia along with the Karaoke? If so, have they had a good response to it? Thanks

I have never done it with karaoke. I used to do it on a seperate night.

This idea is out dated. I used to go over very well. Now that everyone has a cell phone many people cheat and google the answers.

I've done it a couple times on a slow nights. It eats up a lot of valuable singing time, so it usually doesn't work for me.

When I did do it, it wasn't very planned. It worked like this - Each singer asked their own trivia question to the audience. Who ever guessed the right answer sang next, but you could only sing once in a round. The people who already sang could help with the answers for the people who hadn't sung yet. The trivia could be any question, so it got quite humorous. If you weren't a singer and answered you could pick someone to sing for you.

I have done it with karaoke & it worked out great in the past, but like said, people can get the answers in seconds with a simple Google search these days - where is the challenge anymore?

I use to do it with song snipits. If you quessed the song correctly, you got to sing next. It was actually kin of hard in a way. You got to hear the song snipit a time or two, then we went on to the next singer. It was hard to keep the song snipit in your head while other music and karaoke was going on.

I think this is very venue dependent. On Halloween night I got the entire audience involved with a trivia sheet when they walked in - they had the entire evening to complete it and nobody googled for answers. It was all '50s and '60s oriented as that was our party theme. I spent 10 minutes or so going over the answers and awarded prizes for the highest points. The crowd enjoyed it, but again, venue dependent - my singers are not whiners at all if they don't get to sing more than 4 times, and as the bulk of attendees are nonsingers who just come to enjoy the entertainment, trivia is a great way to keep everybody involved. Funny, people who really hadn't gotten to know each other before, did get together that night laughing over answers, etc. (I do horribly difficult trivia, apparently!)

NTN trivia is also around at some Bars. It's very expensive for those that lease the boxes and subscribe to it, which is why you don't see it at too many places. I know that the Buffalo Wild Wings chians are one of the few places that still have it.

I always thought NTN was free for the venue and ad-supported. No?

You mean you have to pay for it AND they constantly stop the game to run beer ads?

The customer doesn't pay anything for it... unless you count their bar tab. The Bar pays a monthly fee for the boxes. The minimum amount of boxes that NTN leases out is 5. Usually a good sized bar will have at least 15 to 20 boxes. I remember back in '98 or '99, a bar owner told me that he paid $800 a month just for the minimum amount of boxes.

And the Buzztime/NTN trivia games can be an indicator for how intoxicated you are. I may start off winning or placing 2nd, but some pints later on I'll be placing lower and lower.

I've never done it at a regular club gig, but I did have a private party last year where we did a Trivia game. It went over really well and I didn't see anyone cheating. We were keeping score and there were prizes at the end. It was a good time but I can't imagine trying to do anything like that at a regular show. As mentioned previously it takes up valuable singing time.

LOL!!!!

At one time, I was a member of the team that ranked number 1 in the nation... The bar name was Maggie Mae's in NY. These people (not me) were AMAZING with their knowledge of trivia. They also had a great system for keeping the Bar ranking high (when unsure of the answers) when they played the themed games (at 9 PM EST/DST).

Thanks for all your reply's. I'm going to try adding in a music trivia game this week for those that don't necessarily come out to sing but just likes to sit and listen. I'm going to start this week with TEN sound bites from movies. They are about 33-36 seconds and I will have game sheets around the bar for anyone that wants to play. They just need to put their name on the sheet for identification. I will periodically play the ten sound bites within a 1 -2 hour time frame. I will have all ten movies listed on the sheet (not in the right order) and they have to number them as I play them. All correct answers will be placed in a bag and one winner will be drawn to win a prize. There will be different prizes each week but the bar owner has offered to supply a ten dollar off the bar tab this week for the winner which can be used at any time. I will let you know how it works out!

Hopefully if all goes well I will do some Hip Hop next week, Rock the following, etc.

Outdated? I run 3 pub quizzes a week. And yes people try to cheat, so we have a rule:

If I see you on a mobile phone, your team is eliminated. Some people complained saying "It's unfair, I'm texting my girl" or such.

I don't care. You wanna do that, cool, just won't be in the quiz this week.

When I do see someone on a mobile - I pause and announce it over the mic. I then always get "I'm texting my wife, check my phone". Sorry, you know the rules, and that person is not entered into the prizes that week, nor are the team.

And who do the team (@$%&#!) at? Not me but the dude with the phone. And then next week, they usually have replaced him.

It sounds VERY much like an overly strict rule, but it works, and about 90% of the people actually welcome it.

And as with any rule, there are exceptions. Eg, the husband of a pregnant mother asked me if he could give me his phone, cos she may be calling and need to go to hospital. Personally I was shocked he was at the quiz - but I also astounded that he felt he needed to ask - he could have told me, and I'd fall in line with something like that!
