Personally i feel if you want to use your own discs..stay home and do it..the KJs ..most of them have spent alot of money on their investment..and to me its rude to use your own disc at a show...you might as well as stand up and sream their selections not good enough for me..................EXCUSE ME!!!!!! You want to use your own disc then go out and start your own show..but dont shove your discs in my face....because I will not allow any singer to use thier own disc at my...MY SHOW!!! Im the one getting paid..using my equiment and its my time..so just deal with it or go some place else as I see it...youdont like it ...TO BAD! is how I see it

Geeez!!! Download winamp along with it's cdg plug in and key changer plugin. All of these are free. Download Sax & Dotty's Zip player to your PC. Plug in thumb drive to your USB port on laptop. Right click on any song on the thumb drive to load it into Sax & Dottys and you're all set. Double click the song in S&D to start playing the song.
If the customer brings their songs in and they are unzipped and in a folder with an mp3 file and a cdg file, just open the mp3 in winamp and you will get the same screen with the lyrics so you get with Sax & Dotty's zip player because it uses winamp and it's plug ins to play the files. I'm not sure if you can still find Sax N Dotty's zip player anymore, if you can great, if you can't you can use Debs Karaoke Zip Player, also free and almost identical to Sax N Dotty's --> http://www.debssoftware.com/
Well, RLC, while I wouldn't use someone's thumb drive because of concerns about a virus, I thought that it might me nice to have the program your recommended from "debssoftware". Unfortunately, after I downloaded it I was informed that I am missing a JRE file for Java Software. I did make a lame attempt to get that corrected but with no success. And I really don't want to make a big deal out of this; I don't really need the software though it would be nice to have!
Thanks for your suggestion!
BFFL, thanks for your help also, but Winamp will only play CDG's using a plugin that must be purchased and several people I know have stated that they have had problems with that particular plugin. So I am not going to rush out to get it!

Well, I can't say I disagree with your math or suggestion that $2000 can go a long way to support any venue. And I can't say I wouldn't want someone at my show who spends that much money. But sooooooo many KJ's, KJ's much more experienced than myself have stated that you can't make hosting decisions based upon how much any one person or group of people spend.
Now, as for me, I go out of my way to keep those spending a lot of money happy. But... how would I know beforehand just how much money anyone is going to lay out on a regular basis? And if a new patron doesn't like the way I do things, well he won't come back and I'll never know what he would have spent. Maybe he would have purchased a diet coke and nursed it all night?

I think there is more middle ground here than black and white. I'm sure if any KJ had people frequently asking to play their CDGs and they were hurting for business they would run out and by a player or set up the one they already have.
If my CDG player sat with no one ever bringing in CDGs I'd probably pack it up.
Why does everything have to be so black and white.

It would be SO much easier to follow these topics if people using the quote feature would learn to USE the quote feature properly. Dammit.

Karen K @ Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:23 pm wrote: Boy Dan, I'd be really careful with those kinds of generalizations if I were you. Karen, I was very careful to qualify my statements with terms like "in my experience" "usually" and "more often than not". Obviously there are exceptions to every rule or observation. But let's not turn this into a critique of one's individual show. Sorry it wasn't your cup of tea. To be honest, when I go out to sing, I would never come to a show like the one you attended. Too many people, too long a wait, too many kids there. I prefer a more "singer-centric" show, not as much of a wild party. But let me assure you that at the venue you attended, karaoke is not an "incidental activity" as evidenced by the fact that a rotation of 20-30 singers is its norm. As for an "automatic crowd", since I started there about 18 months ago, I doubled the audience after the owners had bad experiences with 2 other hosts. Their Monday night show is on its 3rd host in less than a year. In fact I just had a meeting with the owner who profusely thanked me for building that night to gargantuan proportions and talked about giving me a raise equivalent to double what most Seattle-area bars pay their KJs to keep me there. Karen K @ Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:23 pm wrote: I don't believe I commited any social faux pas while there but felt a little like a kindergartner when I left, for having come up to the stage with my friend, who is a very new singer (and feels reassured if I'm standing there in case she needs help). No social faux pas, but certainly a violation of standard karaoke etiquette. No one gets a mic unless their name is on the slip. Also, most shows order their rotation by stage time. (It's also listed in the "Karaoke Kourtesies" on the front cover of my song lists.) As you just had a solo, if you wanted to be on stage with someone else, all the other singers in the queue should have had their turn before you came back on stage. After you left the stage I had 2 waiting singers approach me with, "Why did she get to sing twice when I haven't sung yet?" Sorry if you felt my demeanor was condescending. But you're a host! That's something you should have known. Karen K @ Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:23 pm wrote: We all have to do what works for each of us, I guess ... And that's the bottom line. At different venues, my hosting style is different, but always accommodating and respectful. You had left my show before it got packed, but when it's wall-to-wall drunk people in there, you can't be "informal and folksy". There are several other area karaoke shows that night and I imagine if people weren't having a good time or being entertained, they'd go there instead of continuing to increase our door numbers and register ring. 'Nuff said. I look forward to checking out your show sometime! Different strokes for different folks. (And different hosting styles for different venues!) Good point, Babs. at my show I rarely if ever have people with their own discs come to the show, because it's just not that kind of venue. Should I have a show with more "serious" singers who regularly brought their own discs, I'd take the time to install the needed hookup to activate it (it's already in my rack).
I agree that people should patronize the shows at which they feel the most comfortable and accommodated. As Karen said, we all have to do what works for us...and our crowd.

I tried to offer my opinion without attacking you, but you seem to want to entice some sort of TIFF. Not gonna do it !! - I tried to offer suggestions to those singers who can't find a show that will play CDGS, but you insist on attacking my show for some reason. I just suggested maybe you give your songs to your favorite KJ to keep for you. But you don't have a FAVORITE KJ and it seems you don't like or trust anyone. That is SAD. You think every KJ is either CHEAP or a THIEF and wonder why so many on this site don't care for you. ALSO SAD
fwiw:
If the OWNER or BAR MANAGER asked me to hook up a cdg player, I would without objection. If I felt the NEED or saw a demand at my show I would hook one up without objection. I host karaoke for ME and the MANAGEMENT of the venues, they are the ones that PAY me. I don't lose sleep over the ignorant singers like yourself who Don't come to my shows. See it's simple ... You and your kind don't put any extra money in my pocket. I despise singers like you .. Chronic Complainers and know it alls. You know how every show should be run but don't KJ yourself.
My shows are much more enjoyable for not only me but the other singers when people like you stay away. There is a reason every post you make ends with the statement ..."and I'll never be back to that show" you're a P.I.T. A
Don't be so stupid to confuse what I just said .. I cater to my singers and have respect for the singers that patronize my show even if its for the 1st time. I enjoy my job and get satisfaction from seeing a singer enjoy my show ..and there are many. The minority of singers like yourself can wander through karaoke hell trying to find a home ... I don't care and won't lose sleep ove it.

Love kj's with this attitude . I've spent thousands upon thousands on music & yet I still welcome customer discs with open arms. I don't think it rude, I think it great that people are out getting exactly what they want. Bring it in!

Funny thing is kj's say they will not change their decision based on one person, YET, many singers here said they would not become regulars of a show that didn't, they may stay for the night and sing stuff they really don't want to do or versions they don't care for - but not to return to become a regular of that kj (and more importantly the club where the kj is trying to help make money) anymore. Yes it's a kj's show, but without the singers, the show wouldn't exist.

First things first. I ALWAYS HAVE AN ANSWER. I go to a variety of shows because I like to listen to a variety of singers and not the same 10 people week after week. There are some shows that I go to almost every week. There are some KJ's that I try to patronize more often than others. I am always on the look out for a new show that might be better than one of the shows that I frequent now. Sometimes a new venue is a nice change of pace for me. Different food menu. Different type of songs being sung than in another place. I might get lucky and find a diamond in the rough by always being willing to check out a new karaoke spot. I went to a place last Thursday that I had never been to before. The KJ is still CDG disc based and is willing to play whatevr disc I give him. I even won the contest that they were running with one of my home made tracks that you seem to think are below average in quality. The audience didn't think so. As good as the place was, I wouldn't cross off every other Thursday night gig that I have ever gone to. I like to experience as many karaoke venues as possible. I actually enjoy listening to other people sing. I would rather listen to a bunch of amateurs like myself than go listen to a band that plays the same 30 songs every week.....unless it was The E Street Band along with Bruce Springsteen. LOL If you provided a decent show and someone came even every other week and spent $40 , that would still put a thousand dollars in the till by the end of the year. If you lose that singer because of your high and mighty attitude, you have just cost your BOSS money because you wouldn't play someone's CD. I guess someone like me has to go to your BOSS and tell him or her that they will lose business because their KJ refuses to accomodate a certain segment of the singing population.....because if the BOSS told you to do it; you would do it like the good little biatch that you are. PURRfect little kitty.

Bruce
Please tell me where I came off in this topic with a higher than almighty attitude ?
You seem to be holding on to some feelings from another thread.
I'm happy for you if you've found shows that meet your criteria. Thats GREAT NEWS and congrats on winning the contest. You seem to want to continue to attack me and thats ok if it makes you feel important. YES I guess if listening and doing to what the owner or managers suggest is being a biyatch ..OK you got me.
So you found a great KJ and show that will play your discs ??? THEN WHY ARE YOUR CALLING EVERY OTHER KJ ---CHEAP AND THIEVES ????

There are Burger Kings. There are McDonalds. There are many fast food chains that do things THEIR WAY. I can get a burger at any of them, regardless of what they call it.
Then there are dining establishments that will go the extra mile and make something for a customer, even if it isn't on the menu.
If Jam wants to be analogous to McDonalds; that's fine with me. Lonnie prefers to be compared to a high class restaurant that CATERS to it's customers while Jam wants to be compared to an establishment that is completely rigid in it's business plan. What's next Jam???? No country music allowed at your shows any more??? We don't serve that crap here. We just serve burgers and fries. Take it or leave it.
You don't seem to see the forest for the trees, Jam. If a singer asks you to provide a machine to play discs, you tell him NO! If that customer then complains to your boss and your boss TELLS you that you have to have a player to keep the gig, you will get a player and hook it up. Why would you want your boss to already know that people don't like something about your show. If you would just provide the player in the first place; the customer is happy and the boss is happy because he doesn't have to address a situation that never should have a risen. The only reason it came to his attention is because you want to be as stubborn as a mule and you don't want some "customer" telling you how you could improve your show because your EGO won't let you be told that you aren't doing something the RIGHT WAY or that you could be doing it in a BETTER WAY. You could easily provide a better show but you don't want to....because you think that your way is already the best way. You must be right though because you have the GEMINI genius backing you up all of the way. LOL
