There, once again, is the little man with the BIG EGO who gets offended by someone who likes different music than he does. No single KJ can have every song for every singer. Only a very insecure person would be offended by someone bringing in their own music to sing to. WITHOUT SINGERS, YOU DON'T HAVE A SHOW. Maybe that's why the both of you only have one show apiece. The karaoke manufacturers must love guys like you who discourage people from buying karaoke discs. Don't waste your time or money buying karaoke music because I won;t let you use it BECAUSE I AM THE KARAOKE KING !!!!

I Apologize --I'm starting to understand that you either are mentally challenged and or on some medications that are just not working. If I felt the need I would hook up a cdg player .. I don't feel the need . It's not an EGO thing with the KJ's its an EGO thing with singers like you that expect everything. If you want a show like Lonnies -GO TO LONNIES SHOW. Are you that dense that you want to keep arguing and trying to tell people how to run their business? As a KJ I don't care about what whiney singers have to say but will discuss the show with owners and management on how best to present the show. I pride myself on knowing whats best for my Karaoke NIGHTS ..right now its no cdg player. Thats my CHOICE as a KJ in the future it may change. I'm not against singers with discs ...I've said this many times but you are too stupid to understand and want to keep attacking and insulting my show. I'll take it from where it comes. Talk about being RIGID. The problem I see is that as a SINGER, it's unfair to say that if the KJ doesn't have a cdg player when you come to their show, that you'll NOT COME BACK. Where is the incentive for the KJ to get a player. Why not ask the KJ if they have the ability to play your disc, and at least give them a chance to respond. On occasion I DON'T bring my cdg player for some reason or other. It's not because I won't play their discs. So, if someone happens to come to my show THAT particular night, and DOESN'T give me the chance to explain that I USUALLY have my player, but just not TONIGHT, then (in my opinion), that's not fair. If they would ask, I would have a chance to tell them that the NEXT time they come I'll DEFINATELY be able to play their discs. Is that asking too much? As a host, I'm all for PLEASING the singers, but STUFF does happen, so to say if a KJ can't play your disc that you'll NEVER come back is JUST AS BAD as a KJ that says they'll NEVER play your discs. MY 2 cents.

Srnity -- I've said it many times on this topic-- The singer should talk to the KJ -- If the KJ does not have a cdg player set up .. maybe if he knew that this singer will be back next week .. the kj just might bring a player or discuss with the singer why he won't . As a KJ I don't go as far as Gemini in his thinking ( but he should run his show how ever he wants) . I just resent being called LAZY or CHEAP or don't believe any KJ who chooses not to play customer cdgs should be labeled the same.

Rosario i believe a lot of kjs already have players mounted in their rigs, so to have something one week and not the next, unless it's broken, doesn't apply to most- but i do repect your situation.

Forgive me if along the lines i ever implied that a kj might be lazy or unprofessional if they don't play customers discs. Didn't mean to "group you" into the constant threads here about the illegal kjs that don't spend beyond their loaded hard drives.

I personally look at the BEST OVERALL shows and notice that they do offer the best of everything, or are willing to get it. Survival of the fittest usually means growing stronger and better than the next guy and staying ahead of the competition to where you don't have to worry about competition.

Lonman's show seems to be the best example of overall excellent quality here so far. The REST of us learn and try to elevate our shows to that benchmark. Practicality is important if you're mobile or not, and equipment overkill is ridiculous, but finding that middle ground to work your show, i agree, IS a personal choice.

I choose to become better so i don't mind imitating others to become more successful at my own shows. And certainly not EVERY KJ needs a cdg player or dvd player or whatnot if it's not requested frequently by your clientele.

I think the label is rooted from kj's in general that claim it's too much work, or too much of a hassle to set up, or I don't wan't to have to load a disc and wait for it - as these are just a couple excuses i've heard in the past. Not saying you in particular, but these excuses seem to lump all computer kj's that don't/won't run a player for customer discs together.
Not related, but i've heard kj's that said they would drop shows or karaoke altogether if they ever had to revert back to discs either for a night say if their computer died and didn't have a replacement available for maybe the next couple shows or if law mandated they do so. This is a lazy KJ IMO!

I'm going to be bringing a disc with a song that I know no one but me has, to a party that I was invited to. Do I expect for him to play it? A resounding NO. Would I be upset if I can't sing the song I want to sing? Maybe but I would get over it. After all it's his show not mine. I doubt I would be going to see him again anyway.

Babs and others, come to beautiful Halifax and bring your discs. Enjoy our seafood, downing it with some of the best beer (not sody pop, CUE LOL) in the world.

I think there is more middle ground here than black and white. I'm sure if any KJ had people frequently asking to play their CDGs and they were hurting for business they would run out and by a player or set up the one they already have.

If my CDG player sat with no one ever bringing in CDGs I'd probably pack it up.

Why does everything have to be so black and white.

Because, m'dear, everyone has to be right and no one wants to be wrong. IMHO, yours is the most sensible response to those who just love to debate, even without a scintilla of personal experience with the subject at hand, they debate.

In my area one of the most successful, lappy-based multiriggers added the ability for his computers to play CDG's. At the same time, an even MORE successful, computer-based multirigger is downsizing to netbooks at all of his new shows. And since netbooks have no CD-rom drive it would take an external drive to make the unit accommodate a CDG. Realizing this company is "down-sizing" I doubt that they have any desire to carry an external drive after dumping the lappy setup!

Excellent post Bruce! Some great points made here!

First of all, THE SINGERS ARE THE SHOW. Without singers a KJ is stuck performing a lounge act, running a DJ show or just doing NOTHING.

The next point is very interesting - I looked at Gemini's site and he has a grand total of ONE SHOW a week, MAYBE THERE IS A REASON....mmmmm.

Now for the point I was expecting someone to make A LOT sooner - when you refuse to play customer discs , you discourage the consumer karaoke market, WHICH IS A LARGE PART OF THE KARAOKE MARKET. If I lived in Salina, KS, why would I waste my money on CDGs or custom CDGs so I could just sing at home. Also, how many KJs got into this business FIRST being music collectors?

As a singer IF I go to a show that has a DECENT music library comprised primarily of QUALITY brands I can usually find something to sing. When I go to a show with a library comprised of CRAP brands, I'm bringing my discs - I've heard too many karaoke renditions that I consider DISRESPECTFUL OF THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS, NOT TO MENTION MUSIC (talking about "disrespect").

The guy I sub for, the Rainman, has about 38K songs, 24K unique and LEGAL BTW. There are STILL plenty of songs that he does not have. Guest CDGs have ALWAYS been welcome at his shows and ALWAYS will be, even though he has "gone computer" (CAVS JB-199) . I'd bet that probably at least 50 to 100 of his discs were purchased because a customer brought them in and he thought that these would be worthwhile to purchase. Maybe there's a reason that he has been in business as an independent operator for TWELVE YEARS now. Maybe there's a reason that KJs like Lonman and Timberlea who are obviously CUSTOMER SERVICE oriented have been around even longer!!!

I guess I've never been able to understand the mentality of KJs who refuse to play customer discs.

LOL your funny Big Ego..that has nothing to do with it..and believe im not insecure by no means... I currnetly have one show due to the fact right now with working for kmart and the amount of hours I have to put in 50+..thats enough for me..I recently turned down 2 chances for other places...again due to my work ..so before you accuse anyone of anything you need to know the facts...

Funny thing here is he bohemouthly refuses customer discs, however has no problem bringing them into someone elses show. Unfortunately cannot find that link from an old forum. Also he doesn't allow any preview of any kind on his website to show his selection...another insecurity here I bet!
Doesn't matter, I have talked with a couple on the other forum that has actually BEEN to his shows & reported back. Kind of funny actually because they described that not only could he play their disc but he didn't have nearly the selection he leads people to believe also not one of the songs they brought in to sing...these are all older out of print songs so it would be expected a kj would be maybe embarrassed that he couldn't get something like that.

It's not that I can't stand it Lonnie. I just don't prefer it. There are many KJ's around here that run a rotation similar to the way you do and I do patronize their shows. I also go to some shows that can't play a CD and manage to find something to sing. Again, it's just not what I prefer but I can handle it. If I went to a burger joint and they refused to carry ketchup, I'd find a burger place that carried ketchup in the future but I'd eat the burger that I ordered....THIS TIME.

And of course I AM RIGHT. Ah, but am I right as a singer, or am I right as a KJ?

On the rare occasions that I do go out to sing I take my own discs. Ah... but I almost forgot, I first look through the show's catalog before I ever look at my discs. And what if I don't find anything in the catalog and the KJ can't/won't play my discs? C'mon, what did I do at karaoke shows before I had my own discs? Will I go back to that show if he can't/won't play my discs? I'll decide that at the end of the evening after I have had time to see if I had a good time and to evaluate all of the variables. But whatever I do I will be right!

Now, as a KJ, I probably have more options than most to play discs. Ah but the last time anyone asked me to play a disc was weeks ago. And must I include my deck among the alternatives I have available at every one of my show? If I did, I would need a bigger table, an A/B switch, an extra cable, maybe even a bigger car? And what will people think of me if my car isn't big enough? Will they feel that I am a poor businessman for having an undersized car? What if I get a bigger car, bring the deck only to find out the guy with disc doesn't like my rotation policy? Then what? Well, I am sure I'll be told how to run my rotation properly. Thank God for singers who know more than the hosts about running karaoke. However, whatever I do, I will be right!

Dr. Fred, no offense, but haven't you just started hosting karaoke a year or so ago and have only 1 venue of experience to speak from? Forgive me if i'm wrong, but with very little experience, putting out global beliefs is, um... risky.

I have one regular weekly venue, I have done occasional shows at 8 others for special events.

I have also turned down a total of 10 requests to do regular shows at other clubs (one regular night a week is all I want to do with a full time day job). All this with the only advertising of word of mouth.

I have been doing karaoke for over two years, admittedly not too long, but I am good at it. I have been asked to replace multiple hosts with more than 5 years experience, and I fill my venue with SINGERS (not people who would be in the same bar anyway even if there were no karaoke that night). This is despite the fact that I have 4 other competing karaoke shows that I regularly outdraw on the same night. I am pretty sure I have the most busy regular weekly karaoke show in town out of about 16 different shows.

I pride myself with the fact that I rarely go a couple weeks without somone new telling me for the first time that I run the best karaoke they have ever been to. This includes people visiting from out of town from bigger cities and even from other countries.

I started out with rotations of 5-6 singers, on my weeknights and built it to regularly exceeding 30 person rotations. With 16 years of experience you admit to having average crowds much smaller than mine. Even though I do this for FUN, I am good at it. That entitles me to make generaliations because I am doing very well with my shows.
